Here's a few tips that helped me on my journey (from a "noname" on KZitem): - Always use your pinky. (Try not to let it fall under the fretboard when you aren't using it) - Invest about $30 in a footstool. - Maintain good posture (yours actually looks really solid) - The metronome is your friend. Take breaks, but never neglect it. - Remember to mute with your right hand while studying sweeping. - If you're sweeping down, and your pick is bouncing on each string, readjust your pick so there is a smaller piece of it sticking out between your thumb and index finger. (Think about how smooth the feathers feel while dusting the house. You dont feel the bumps in the wall behind it.) Since you use your body to play an instrument, dont forget to take care of it (many people neglect this): - Eat a clean diet. (Refrain from sugars and heavy carbs before practice) - Stay hydrated. - Go run a few miles when you are mentally burned out. - Adopt a full body workout routine (forearms are good, but they are also connected to biceps, and triceps). - Try practicing while in a fasting state. - Get enough sleep at night - Always remain positive about your progress, but also be objective. - Don't beat yourself up if you're not as good as your favorite guitar hero. We've all had bad days before we improved. 🙂

Great video, love seeing "real " playing. I kind of gave up on getting faster because arthritis and I started Jazz based Theory which made me interested in the content of what I'm playing. I still wish I was faster though 😅

All the martial arts cliches about "flowing like water" really help here: tension comes from your muscles opposing each other, which is exactly what you want to avoid to make playing fast and clean possible. If you focus on light, minimalist movements and taking all tension out of your hands while you play, it gets much easier.

How do you know you're not already fast? Your technique looks great! And most people already have plenty of joint motion speed for fast picking, rendering exercises a moot point. If you haven't done so, I recommend testing your raw joint motion speed without a guitar, and then skipping straight to the fun part of playing fast stuff now instead of some indeterminate point in the future after "speed" has been "built" - which again, probably doesn't need to happen, because you probably already have it!

Just stumbled upon your videos and channel. I agree with you and highly recommend the classical position while practicing because it easier on your wrist and plus when you perform live or standing up, the guitar is naturally in that position as well.

Good for you Jessica you're doing great. Starting off slow at different bpms and then raising to speed is good warm up. Appregios sweeping string skipping scales modes etc...those will help you get good quick with practice for sure. Bernth is great and funny. Alexi Laiho was a legend and based off of classical. I usually sit with the guitar butt just propped off of one leg acting as the raised classical position to get over the fretboard on the higher notes and it feels to me more natural than sitting with one leg raised. My leg falls asleep if I play like that lol. Keep up the good work practice and have fun. The more you play the better you will become in no time. Nice guitar by the way❤

My take on playing fast is a little bit different regarding what's important. 1. The technique from playing slow to fast can differ a lot, so sometimes when you are doing the metronome thing you can hit a wall bpm wise simply because the technique you are using does not allow for higher speeds. And here i'm not talking about economy picking vs alternate picking. I'm talking about using the same picking style in a wide BPM range. I.e. your alternate picking technique has to change somewhat to acomodate for faster BPM, because as you speed up you start hitting unwanted strings. 2. I personally find all the focus on the "moving your fingers efficiently" thing while trying to learn a little bit beside the point. Well, in order to play fast you must be efficient, there's no way around that and because of that your body will naturally find the best way to execute those movements, your hands will naturally adjust to more efficient movement as you improve. IMHO the focus should be on staying relaxed while practicing, and let the "efficient movement" pieces fall where they may. Regarding picking technique search for Troy Grady, he has the research on that just figured out. Had I know his material before it would've save me years of practicing. And btw, great improvements in for only 2 weeks.

Thank you for your comment! I agree I think overall the biggest thing for me this year is learning how to relax more it makes a world of difference. I find it still takes some getting used to, but on days where I’m relaxed I definitely find I can play faster and more smoothly!

I was reading your comment and immediately thought of Troy Grady, even before you mentioned him. And totally agree, I found way more success with trying stuff out at high speeds and then cleaning that up at slightly lower speeds than the pure incremental increase.

Congrats on the progress you've made on your guitar journey so far! I think that improving your guitar speed starts with breaking down the challenges into more manageable pieces. Take alternate picking as an example. This technique can be divided into several components: 1. Single-note alternate picking on one string 2. Coordinating both hands while picking multiple notes on one string 3. Inside string changes 4. Outside string changes 5. Ascending runs 6. Descending runs 7. etc Create focused exercises for each of these components and master them individually. This targeted approach allows you to concentrate on one aspect at a time, making your practice more efficient. As you get comfortable with each element, you'll find that executing longer licks becomes easier. Practicing complex licks without mastering the basics can be overwhelming and less effective. So, focus on the fundamentals to accelerate your progress.

Good for you for being dedicated. It definitely takes time and focus. One suggestion on your picking technique... Maybe try forming more of a fist with your picking hand and pinch the pick closer to your second index finger knuckle. This really helped me with speed. Also, it's awkward at first, but not anchoring your hand to the bridge will keep your picking consistent across all strings. Good luck!

Hi Jessica, your video literally just popped up on my feed and I watched it. I’m not trying to plug my own videos. Lol but I do have a couple on the subject. But I’d like to give you a couple of helpful tips. You should adjust the way you hold the pic instead of flat picking you should hold the pic with a downward slant at like a 30° angle. Also, instead of moving your wrist side to side, you should be moving it forward and backward and using your forearm to get up and down the strings subtly. Also, instead of just trying to accrue speed on the Metronome, you need to just economy pick everything that’s the only real way to accrue, lightning speed and less you try upward pick slanting on uneven amounts of notes. I know that part might sound complicated so if you don’t know what that means, just go with the first thing I was talking about with the economy picking. Hopefully some of that helps, the speed is all in your right hand, if you are able to make those adjustments more than likely, you’ll see a difference within a few minutes of playing and it might save you years of frustration. Great video!

for getting faster sweep picking don't pluck the strings there should be very little motion of the pick. when your sweeping your pick should basically brush the strings in one motion. once you coordinate that you will be sweeping for days as fast as your left hand can keep up.

Another tip would be to incorporate shorter exercises that focus on a single concept such as (but not limited to) three note per string runs, sweeps, playing up 3 notes/move back 2/repeat, vice versa, play up 4/ move back 3/repeat/vice versa, pedal tone, etc. Maybe my tips will help you, maybe they won't. Good luck to you though, the fun is in the journey itself!

I’m sure you’ll get there Jessica. I’ve been playing a long time, but I’m more of a composer nowadays and I do that more on keyboard than guitar lately. I haven’t focused on speed in a long time. Also, because I have carpal tunnel syndrome. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t mind regaining my speed. Oddly enough, I’ve always found that trying too hard is counterproductive for me. The scales & exercises do help though.

I tried the whole "play slow and gradually play faster" thing for years and years and I could never seem to break past the "wall" where I would hit a certain speed around 105 bpm 16th trips and the harder I pushed against this wall, the worse I played. It was like chinese finger cuffs or quicksand, the more I fought, the worse I got. Then I discovered this weird trick. Instead of trying to speed up, constantly pushing against a "wall", try to slow down. Find out what your max speed is. Then chop about ten to 15 bpm off of it and then play short exercises (4 bars max) but gradually play slower and slower and slower. Once you hit like 80 bpm, turn around and gradually speed up, but don't try to go past your max minus 10 speed. Then slow it down again. You will (or at least I did, and continue to) hit a point where everything just feel so ridiculously slow and you'll step on the gas and you'll be able to just fly at ludicrous speed and you won't have to try or think about what you're doing.

From time to time you should just burst and play super fast for few minutes, even if sloppy. „Fake it till you make it“. Or short bursts of speed on short sequences. Then get back to practice as fast as you also can play very clean. It will speed up the fast playing more than just gradually enhance velocity. Playing fast is a different task for muscles, and they have to learn that by doing it. Your body and brain will find ways to make movements more efficient. In times of that fast bursts or fast „faking“ play let your body do its thing of adapting and „learning“. Do those speed bursts as relaxed as possible. Do not care for good notes, just focus on max. speed.

Play the solos without using your pick while using a metronome. Do that Kiko exercise where you play too soft to fret the string and do muted runs every time you pick up a guitar. Learn black metal songs where you do trem picking for 3-5minutes. Try slanting your pick to accommodate if the riff is down picking, alternate, trems etc. Go watch Dean Lamb. Try to learn a bunch of Killswitch Engage riffs - Breathe life, Rose of Sharyn, Break the silence, In due time. Go back and play those solos with and without using your pick

The most important lesson I ever got about how to play fast: DON'T gradually turn up the speed. START FAST. 2 notes. Then 3 notes. Then 4, 5 ...... It is easy to play two notes very fast, right? If you start slow, you WILL hit a boundary, that is much slower, than what you can do for 2 notes. With this method, you will get up to speed MUCH easier, and you will reach a speed you might have thought is impossible for you. Just start with what you want to achieve. And work on the continuity. Such a simple thought, and I did not have it for decades. So many wasted hours.....

Speed practice sucks not just because the exercises are annoying but also you don't see the results immediately. I don't understand how 11 year old super fast playing adhd metalhead kids sat down and practiced all those riffs/scales for so long days and hours without giving up, instead of playing video games or something like that. There are so many of those kids, how they do that? with this kind of content and editing your channel has a huge potential of exploding btw.

You’re not going to change much in one week. 😊 First thing is your picking technique needs to change. Flicking your thumb and index finger simply can not be done very fast. Start working with your teacher on alternate picking starting at the elbow, wrist and fingers should be ridged. I use my remaining fingers against the body as sort of a depth gauge to keep picking depth under control. Look into Al Di Meola. Seeing what he does will help understanding. Next, it’s hard to get anywhere fast if you don’t know where you’re going. Understand the fretboard. Understand at least basic theory and modes of the diatonic scale. Move onto melodic, harmonic, phrygian dominant, symmetrical from there. There is very little value in memorizing other peoples work/solos unless you learn from them technically and harmonically why they work. The most educational thing to do is to transcribe them yourself! Have fun! 👍
