When we visited 5 or so years ago we only got to see a slight glow...I was so bummed. I guess I'll have to go back sometime.

Bummer! Its such a fickle thing isn't it? We felt really lucky that it had started again.

Did you go to film school or are you an autodidactic prodigy? Your shooting and editing technique is impeccable. Whether you went to school or not, you must have taken a lot of time considering what you are doing (in terms of videography).

No film school, just lots of practice. Still lots to learn though. Thanks for the comment.

Nice work. We cannot wait to go. I’m obsessed with seeing it too. I kinda want to take it a step closer, literally and dip my geology Hammer into the edge of a lava flow. Have you heard it this is remotely possible? (I realize we may need some thermal protection)

Its not possible at the moment. There are no active flows. I believe the last one was from Lower Puna in 2018. There is visible magma in kilauea Crater though.

It is very clearly marked by the park service along the crater rim drive. Check the National park website before going though. They will give you the best up to date info.

Cool story bro! We're headed to the big island in a week. About how much time should would it take to hike thru the lava tunnel, see the crater, and head out to the lava flow? We have a limited amount of time so trying to manage it efficiently. Also, does the National Park website give updates on active lava flow so we can find out ahead of time if the volcano is active? Thx!

We took about 5 hours to do the above mentioned, but I would have liked more to not feel as rushed. The park website does publish a nearly daily update on the activity of Kilauea so definitely check that often.
