Nice one Luke!! Very fair first review and you touched upon some interesting points with your critical eye which I'm sure most will appreciate :) It was a similar story with the Dwarf2; started out a touch glitchy, then just got better and better with each firmware update. I'm sure this will be the case with the Seestar's, and it's quite remarkable what ZWO have managed to include for the price! I feel folks would be hard pushed not to be impressed with the value offered here. I hope you continue to enjoy it and those 3D printed Bahtinov masks look ace! The dwarf is a great little scope, amd it’s definitely more portable! 🙂 yes, the seestar is better, but it’s bulkier, too. If you travel a lot on foot, hiking or so, i would choose the dwarf. If you have a car, the s50 might be the better choice. Both have their pros and cons. I’ve switched to the Seestar for now..😉

@@erebostd I don't see it as a huge difference in carrying if the Seestar isn't packed in it's hardcase. Just over 3lbs more and only the thickness dimension significantly wider isn't very off-putting for backbacking. Where I see the Dwarf II a bit more useful is the tracking mode for daytrippers wanting to video on the run whether animals or events as that was it's base design concept. Both have a place which is really neat and I could see both being really fun at events of all kinds. Compare that to others on the market and these two devices really hit the bullseye.
@lukomatico

On the note of travel with the units: Having both side-by-side I reckon the Dwarf would probably be a little more robust to pack away uncased as it's camera unit is supported from both ends of course - The seestar really should be transported in the case I reckon, due to its camera unit only having one point of support on the body 👍

I enjoyed your look at the Seestar. I wonder if your location for shooting played part in focus issues? Would be good to see if on your particular demo model it displayed the same issue in various locations and not others. But it is good to hear they are working on manual adjustment. Were you using the supplied tripod or one of your own? I'm not a fan of putting these devices so low to the ground, some areas I've observed from ground dew definitely can play havoc with dewing up optics. All in all, the Seestar and the Dwarf II look to be game changers for a lot of us amateurs who can afford sub $600 easier than +$1000 for such a device.

Excellent review Luke, I prefer the look of this to the Dwarf II. The blurbage on ZWO's website says the working temperature range is 0-40C with a max relative humidity of 60%, is the -10C the storage temperature or have ZWO told you something different? 0C and 60% RH would classed as tropical in Scotland during winter🙂Having said that my ASI2600's are only rated down to -5C and they are still ok (famous last words).

If the time you loose during an observation is related to the recording @8:50 then I would say images are sorted out as the telescope points pretty far up. Close to the zenith Alt-AZ mounts are not so precise anymore in terms of tracking. The Vaonis Vespera (similar specs to the S50) has the same issue. The higher a target is in the sky the more time on an observation you loose. I think these are the technical limits of this little devices.

Hey mate! This scope won't let you track objects above a certain altitude, as you quite rightly mentioned - field rotation/tracking accuracy can be a real problem for alt-az mounts at high pointing angles! 👍 ZWO suggested I should try to level more accurately at the start of the session which is fair enough really, I got it close but not perfect! Hey mate! - it makes its own wifi hotspot which you connect to with your mobile device :-) Hope that helps!

Hey Lubo! Hopefully it won't be much longer mate, I think they must have sold a TON of these so there's probably quite the backlog haha! I'll be sure to mention your feedback about EQ mode by the way! Clear skies :-)

Unfortunately, to my knowledge at least, it can't track satellites. - it can certainly track comets and other objects though! :-)

True mate! Not gonna replace your full-on astrophotography setup, but amazingly fun and compact still - be great for travel or people just starting out 👍

Nice scope but for me it's not and astrophotographers tool for decent images. Yes great for outreach and school camps but a serious tool? I mean if one component breaks then the whole thing is a paperweight. It does have its place however but not in my house :)

It could be a good travel setup however, especially on holiday, if one is hiking to a remote location, or is travelling by plane, you can add that to your carry-on, along with clothes and essentials, "all components" already in. You won't be able to lug all your "serious" equipment on your carry-on, or on your back now can you. Sure it won't be able to do what some consider ideal images, but it is decent for what it is, especially with its entry price of $499, ($399 had you pre-ordered). One of your filters would cost just as much.

Hey Nik! :-D I get you mate aye, it's definitely not gonna be for everyone - totally agree! :-) I reckon it's superb for what it aims at being though, a nice easy way to enjoy the night sky and share it with others should you wish, I can't knock anything that makes astronomy more accessible! Hope you're keeping well my friend! Clear skies!

All valid points mate yeah! :-) portability and ease of use are key factors with it, it can places my main rig will never (my main rig will never leave the observatory to be honest, hah!)

Hey mate! - you could look at the planets & moon with the Seestar, the moon will be great but the planets will be a little small & lack some details of course :-) Hope that helps!
