That slow-mo footage was cool, and having the clear tube is a brilliant way to show it all off.

Make a black powder "dribbler" out of a clicky ball point pen and you have the best tool for filling touch holes, flintlock pans, etc.

One interesting observation. At 2:56 when the ball leaves the muzzle you can see a return wave in the smoke as air rushes in to the barrel. In theory at least this means that there is a small partial vacuum in the barrel at this point slowing the ball down so actually cutting the barrel down by say 3 cm would actually improve the balls muzzle velocity.

Hi. Great video 💜 Would adding a wad of paper or cloth between the powder and the ball not help with all that wasted expanding gas burning in front of the ball? Why not add a wad to seal the gases? Wouldn't it make the cannon more efficient? Idk. 💜
@explosivescience9389

Thank you, Yes totally, wadding will always make it more efficient. But because this cannon is made out of plastic it doesn’t want to create too much pressure. You can see in the first slow mo that some of the smoke escapes from the breach, any more pressure built up behind that ball and it would probably just blow out the back. Just the same as the bowling ball cannon, we don’t need it to be efficient, it just needs to work, safely.

I was suprised how little of the charge escaped from the touch hole, I expected continuous flame from there.

Thank you for this video! Do you know how a hot shot cannonball would've been fired? Since the cannonball would've been heated how could it been loaded safely without exploding the cannon? The hot shot method was used to fire on Prospect Bluff Florida in 1816.

@@explosivescience9389 but you need to be really carefull not to use too much propellant, else the explosive in the shell will join the propellant explosion in solidarity. the first time someone in japan fired a 4 foot shell that happened, leaving a 35 foot wide crater. luckyly they knew how dangerous it was and were at a save distance...
