I'm glad you mentioned Shining Force 3 and the huge effort of the fan translation team; they did (and still do, to the utmost level of excellence) a great job, and the translation is being refined to this day, truly worthy of the Shining legacy in a way not even Sega does now, or did even then. Dragon Force 2 should also be mentioned, as a big project that's complete and impressively made. Lastly, Princess Crown is also being worked on, I believe

Watch enough of my content, and you'll see I say the same. But there was ample examples of 2D games on Saturn looking and running great, where as 3D game examples were often from only a handful of sources. It's pretty easy to see why the 2D powerhouse statement takes precedent with most people.

Yea, and in some technical ways better than the PS1. But not by much, it wasn't a 3d "powerhouse" it was just ok at 3d relative the generation, and better than most think. It is however actually a 2d powerhouse, a decent amount beyond the relative power of the generation. So it makes sense to call it that, it doesn't make sense to call it much of a 3d powerhouse.

OH HO HO HO.. The music of Shining Force III at the begining of the PART 4. I have the japanese definitive edition of ClockWork Knight, but yet I like more the US versions. ( but only have the first one). Somehow I like more Virtual On Cyber Troopers tan Orotario Tangram.. I played it with the standard saturn pad, GREAT GAME!! Fei Yen my favorite character. Have both US and japanese releases. Guardian Heroes is a no brainer.. Simply a gem. Still no burning rangers in my collection. Shining The Holy Ark is very good, but not great.. About 85 hours of gameplay with this one. ------------------AND THEN, THERE IS THE "SHINING FORCE III"------------------ My Number one Saturn game, and perhaps one of my top 3 games in my entire gaming life. The first scenario was easy to understand, and I played it 3 times from start to ending (about 100 to 115 hours each time), I was so in love with the game that the instant the scenario 2 was out for sale I ordered to Japan, like the first one I played it 3 times (ha ha Japanese was only a minor problem, I memorized the menus and options from the first scenario so I was capable of playing it. A I friend helped me to understand the japanese dialog (at least when he was with me). Then the scenario III arrived (the conclusion) I played it only 2 times, but about 125 each time. I was ready for the last challenge, playing all the 3 scenarios in a row, saving my progress from 1 to 2 and lastly to 3.. 500 HOURS OF GAMEPLAY!! AND repeated some more tiems...at the end I played SHINING FORCE III for more tan 3000 hours!!!! (I want to belive I was able to find at least 99.5% of the hidden characters, all weapons, and all the magic spells). I want to know what you think on t the following exclusive games: Cyber Speedway (Gran Chaser in Japan), the game is only ok, US and Japanese boast a complete different soundtrack, and I like much more the US. Virtua Fighter and Virtua Fighter 2 - Being the second a much better game. Last Bronx - Good solid weapon based fighter. Fighting Vipers - VF with more violence. Fighters Megamix - Fun fun fun VS fighting. Mr. Bones - I still do not understand all the mechanics on the game. Manx TT Super Bike - Fun racing game. Golden Axe The Duel - Average fighting game, I don´t know why the Price above 100 bucks. Cyberbots - Capcom mecha VS fightning game. Nights Into Dreams - incredible game. All the 3 Panzer Dragoon games. Riglord Saga 1 and 2... --- Now I remember why I miss the SEGA of that era..

I had back in the day a Japanese Sega Saturn(they Grey one) ... i even exchanged the CD drive when you could buy the last few New Machines ... i just bought a new one and flipped the CD drive into my Japanese Regionfree Machine ;p I traded it back then VS a Dreamcast ... which i not regret(met my Wife through that transaction ... in PSO ;p)... on the other hand i would like to have all my Games from back then. It's hard that every other Console they made a Emulator for ... just the Saturn has no really good one. One where you can play Shining Force, which i had too. All three Episodes in Japanese ... and the first one in English as well. They even had a Bonus CD in Japan for it, where you could do some special fights with all your Characters. Man, it is *so sad* that you see a ton of those Fire Emblem Games still being made ... but Shining Force was always way better then Fire Emblem for me. Yes Fire Emblem started on the NES, and Shining Force on the Mega Drive/Genesis ... but Shining Force 1 and 2, as well as Shining Force CD are way better than those Fire Emblem Games ... at least for me.

Gun Griffon: set in the futuristic world of 2015 Damn, I must've been asleep during the robot wars of 2015. Who won? Skynet? Writers for games and movies: you always wanna place your plots at least 80 years after the time of writing, when most people watching will be dead, so it's not embarrassing when 2015 rolls around and your plot predicted robot battle suits, nuclear bathtub duckies, cybernetic enhancements and faster than light travel. That way people can't laugh at it.

I absolutely hated, detested, loathed and despised Clockwork Night. I also...I know this is going to piss people off...I hate Nights into Dreams. I bought it with the 3d controller on launch and expected something like Sonic. I remember it leaving a bad taste in my mouth..."Sega gave us this over Sonic...nope, I'm just about done..." I of course got over it rather quickly and feel in love with Guardian Heroes, it's just an amazing title. I still have my Saturn and I have a pretty big collection of Saturn games. Sega Lord X might remember that while I am a Saturn collector I am more of an SNK fan. I have an extensive AES collection as well as a stand up MVS candy cab. I also collect for the PSX and have a giant PlayStation collection. Currently (We are both huge gamers) my fiance and I are working on building a home arcade. Thankfully, she is into games as much as I am. We have two 4K UHD's and every current console (2 Playstation Pro's, 1 Xbox One, 1 Xbox One X, and a Switch) in our bedroom. We are essentially turning our living room into a full arcade that leads to our spare bedroom. We have the MVS cab as well as 2 1-Up Arcade Cabs currently (Rampage and Street Fighter 2). We are impatiently waiting for the Final Fight/ Strider cab...I want it now. ;)

Leonardo Bandeira & Rap Lawyer you guys have GOT to be kidding... While the Saturn had many examples of great 3D graphics such as NiGHTS, VF2 & Virtua Cop (which imo actually look better than the best PS1 graphics), Burning Rangers is NOT in that club... BR was a cool original concept and I appreciated Sonic Team pushing the hardware so late in the Saturn's truncated lifespan, but BR was clearly a bit too ambitious and the Saturn was not up to the task. Whilst the aforementioned games still look great today for 32-Bit era standards, BR was a mass of wobbly polygons, jaggies and pixelisation. And for a game itself, it was actually pretty boring wandering around not doing much except collecting things and putting fires out. BR was a cool idea and the character designs / theme tune / anime was all on point, but as an actual game experience- it fell a long way from the quality of NiGHTS and was Sonic Team's first half strike.

Camelot also developed the gba’s golden sun series. And is curious to see they used the same style: pre rendered graphics, bouncing icons, etc. And oh man how I wish the Saturn would have been the bridge between 2d and 3d. It indeed was a 2d powerhouse. And there’s was so much road to cover, Guardian Heroes is what many current indie games aspire to look. It’s true that competition drives innovation, but that time it drove bad business decisions.

Re: STHA. I mean, all sprites are "prerendered" in a manner of speaking. I think the better distinction is that you don't care for the art style of the spritework. Personally I hated them at first but they grew on me. The game makes good use of the Saturn's strengths to produce a title that I think would be difficult to replicate on competing systems of the era. It's still not as technically impressive as Guardian Heroes or SF III, mind you. Side note, SF III has different zoom levels IIRC. Between that and the 360 degree camera rotation, the camera worked better than any other 3D turn based strategy game of that era IMO.

I'll fully admit that I don't know how to play any version of Virtual On: Cybertroopers. I've read the instructions, the controls seem to make sense, then I start playing the game and the controls seem completely different than what was described. About all I know is that trying to manually get the enemy in your sights is completely pointless. You turn like you have concrete blocks on your feet while the enemy runs circles around you. Of course that's the way pretty much every Japanese designed mech game is. If you're not using the auto-target feature every other second, you have no hope of scoring a hit.

Virtual On wasn't an intuitive game. The arcade learning curve was absolutely brutal, too. The game shined when you used the Twin Sticks controller, however. Trying to play it with a lone dpad was maddening. I could do it, but it wasn't ideal in the slightest.
@lurkerrekrul

I've never played the arcade game. Using the two sticks to move and pushing them in different directions forward/back to turn makes sense to me. I tried to play the arcade version in the Sega Model Two emulator, but apparently the controls for that game are broken. I defined everything, but they never seem to work the way the arcade documentation says they will. I tried to play the Saturn version in an emulator, but it didn't have an option for the twin sticks so I was stuck using just a gamepad. I have the Windows version, but I've never installed it. I got it years ago at a closeout store for $5. I'm not even sure if it would work on this system. Not that I have a state of the art system or anything, but it's newer than what the game was designed for. I tried playing the PS2 port in an emulator, but it was too slow to be playable. Of course I also suck at the various Macross games, the Armored Core games, etc. :)

Two things I took from this video was holy crap I want virtual on-cyber troopers and Sega set the Saturn up to fail with it's lack of returning IPs (and lack of quality sports games) that made the Genesis so popular. Would love to see you do a overview of Sega published games for each Sega console.
