This pack was my introduction to Genesis classics. Dreamcast was my first Sega console as a kid.

Oh yeah. This is a great game. I played the two disc version that I bought at the swap meet for $5 that had every Sega 16bit US, UK, and JP game playable.

People in the homebrew scene back in the day managed to hack the emulator in this to play other USA-region Sega Genesis games. (This was a bit before there was a homebrew emulator that got the sound a bit more accurate.) This means that if for some morbid reason you want to hear how some other Genesis game's sound would be butchered on this, you can try finding or burning a compilation disc with he emulator and a set of ROMs. Of course, many games break even before you can get far into gameplay, and many games have their sound somehow even worse than what's coming out in the official compilation. There are a few musical diamonds underneath all the feces, if you dig deep enough. One of the strangest things about the emulator is that it has six-button support. Six-button support is most likely meant for a game like Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition. However, Capcom's internally-produced ports, including the SFIIs, Slam Masters and other titles, will not run on the emulator. You know what DOES run, though? Those prototypes of the prior scrapped Street Fighter II: Champion Edition port. Almost makes you wonder if Sega had their hands on those the entire time, and why....

Yup. Every 16 bit Sega game on two discs for $5 is one of the greatest decisions I’ve ever made.

This collection was practically the final nail in the coffin for the Sega Dreamcast. What is really jarring about it is the unavoidable difference in the audio emulation for every single game, which I imagine must have been a gigantic slap in the face to people who played the real Genesis hardware and knew what the audio "should" sound like.

I can only imagine the disappointment when people bought this to reveal its horror.

@classicfromtheattic If I remember correctly, the Smash Pack compilations continued on the GBA when Sega acquired THQ in the 2000s. That version was even worse because, again, the audio design was lazy. The music either sounded like it was being run through a buzz saw, or some games just featured one track continuously looped.

Look in the right place you can buy a version of this game with every 16 bit Sega game for every region in their original form. You can even download the files and burn the discs yourself. The first Dreamcasts can play back ups without modifications. What happens is that a lot of these compilations have folders where all the games are stored so some people just shove as many game files as they can then burn a disc so it’s just like the original release with more games. Some places sell discs. Some places allow you to download the files to burn the disc or you backup the disc shove in more games and burn the disc with the added games. Even on places like Steam there are games that were on old consoles. Those games are actually just running on a emulator so people add different games in the games folders and play other games that way. If you need more information let me know.

I remember this compilation being an absolute dumpster fire... I bought the wife and I a dreamcast last christmas and this was the only game it came with. really the only reason I played it at all was to make sure the system worked. I haven't touched it since. the worst part was the straight out murder of yuzo koshiro's soundtracks. I mean I guess the stuff outside of the abysmal genesis emulations are decent enough.

You can’t beat the original hardware. I feel sorry for the people who haven’t played these games since the 90’s, and when they play things like this, then they believe that’s how bad it was originally.

It sounds like for some reason they decided to emulate the Master System's SN76489 sound chip instead of the Genesis YM2612 and hoped nobody would notice. Weird! Great video as always!

Thank you! Yeah it does sound like that. It’s mental that they thought this was acceptable for a powerful system at the time.

@@classicfromtheattic I do remember that it took a long time to get YM2612 emulation accurate - even the 360 ports of Streets of Rage had wonky sounding music bc the chip emulation wasn't 100%. Maybe they tried, realized they were never going to get it working in time, and just went for a chip that was already worked out

Have you ever put the disc in a PC? IT's got some rather interesting hidden files on it...
