Ouuuch, Rob watch out! at 4:21 you started to move the hands forward, and it is obviously before midnight cause the date started to move to 25th. Then at 5:10 you move with the date/GMT forward, but you been in "danger zone" of almost switching time automatically!

Guess what. The new gmt movements from Seiko do not suffer from this. I forget who I watched prove this, but he legit tried to break the gear and it held up no issue.

Although I still haven't handled one of the new GMTs, these are great. It's a touch thick, but then so are the regular models (that 200m WR isn't free). It would be great if they were thinner, but I don't really mind it due to the compactness in the other dimensions for both my SPB089 (blue Alpinist U.S. LE) and SPB159 (gray baby). I think it would be great if the numerals were lumed here, but that's being super picky and anyone used to the regular Alpinist lume will be fine with what's on here. I think I'd take the blue one between the black, blue, green (JDM only), and silvery white LE. Really the only thing I'd improve about the compass alpinists is the compass is just too easy to knock out of place. A touch more force required to move the compass would be perfect. I would definitely see if I could order the hardened coating bracelet used on the LE model. My SBP159 is on the Seiko Alpinist bracelet and although it's not amazing, it's solidly built (like the watch) and very comfortable. The GMT Alpinist from I think the late '90s were 8F high accuracy quartz movements. They even had something like 10 year batteries in them. Crazy cool stuff. The SSASS version is my favorite, and buying one of the 500 made typically runs around the $4K mark (same even before the pandemic). I've seen regular versions listed for a touch over $1K.

That's a really nice watch, but I only have (and only need) one GMT, it's the Citizen series 8 (travelers) GMT

I really like the look of this Alpinist, but the thickness is too much for my taste. Wish they'd have given it a slimmer solid case back and had the saphire crystal flat with the bezel (this would've possibly knocked 2mm off the thickness).

If you ignore the non centered inner basel of the compass function in a 1.1k dollars watch
@Emaratilfy

What are you talking about? It's a click-less inner bezel. You can adjust it how you like
@Spurdospaerde692

@@Emaratilfy I think he's talking about the fact that the centre (rotational axis) of the compass bezel on all Alpinists ever made sometimes can shift ever so slightly (one or two tenths of a mm) from the centre of the dial when it's being turned. Which is due to the compass bezel not actually having a physical, mechanical axis - this bezel just slides around against the outer bezel/case. An entirely meaningless issue of course, given that in actual use of the compass function you only need to align ONE point on the compass bezel with ONE point on the dial. Once that is done, the time and compass functions of the watch are completely unrelated to each other. The perceived "misalignment" (when studied closely and you know what you're looking for, like in macro shots) doesn't matter. It's like complaining about the front wheels of a car not always pointing exactly straight ahead when the car is parked.

No people don't necessarily want a GMT, the market is flooded because Seiko decided to produce inexpensive GMT movements and the market has followed.

$1100 for a seiko gmt? No freakin way. I think I would look at the ali express watches for under 300 with an nh34. Some are actually unique designs. Think seiko likes huffing their own farts. Maybe if it was $600-$700 it would be a reasonable price.

Almost nobody uses their watch for what it’s original design (say 50 years ago) was for. How many people own pilot watch’s but do not fly planes, or chronographs but have never been near a race track? Probably nearly all of them. For me I like GMTs. I like the fourth hand with a pop of colour, it adds some interest to the design, would never use it to track the time overseas (as my phone auto updates to local time) but it’s a feature I like the look of rather than the function of.
