Nice video. Just wanted to add I bought the SSC017 about 3 years ago and failed to check the chronograph function. Only wore the watch a few times and recently tried out the chronograph function and found the reset button (4 'clock ) did not work. Sent it to Seiko for repair since it was still under warranty. Seiko said the problem was a broken case pipe (not sure what that is) and the case needs to be replaced. The repair cost was $185.00. Seiko said the 3-year warranty only covers the movement, and not the case. For about $30 dollars more, I could buy a new one. Needless to say, I didn't opt for the repair since everything else still works. I never would have thought a warranty does not cover the case. So be aware that Seiko warranty only covers the movement.

Thanks for sharing that story, this is the kind of genuinely informative comment that I like to see people leave. I've been extremely lucky with servicing and so on, and never had a real issue with a watch I cared about - even vintage mechanicals. Nonetheless, I've heard plenty of horror stories, and I never bought an entry-level or mid-range watch without essentially assuming that I would have to re-buy it if something went badly wrong. Of course, that doesn't make it right in principle, and as far as I'm concerned repair shouldn't even be an issue. If an entry-level quartz piece is still under warranty you should just get a new replacement watch if there's a serious problem. A giant like Seiko can't afford to replace a $200ish watch as a goodwill gesture? Ridiculous. I'll pin this comment for people to read, because I'm aware of other issues that people have had with this watch, and this aspect of the warranty might affect these as well. Can't over-emphasize that I've never had any issues with mine, but some comments on other youtube videos about this model refer to the crowns sticking and stripping easily, so that probably wouldn't be covered either. Thanks again and best regards, Robert

Thanks for those kind words Neil, quite a few people have asked about that rubber band. I got it on ebay years ago and I can look up the seller if you want, but I have to say that I can't recommend the strap and don't use it anymore - it does look good but is not only uncomfortable but painful at times, because the loop has sharp edges and digs into the wrist. Good video, yet another unbelievably great value, quality Seiko watch. Impossible to better them for value. One point everyone might be missing, is that this Solar does not have an alarm. The alarm is very useful and I miss the alarm chronograph that I sold a few years ago. This watch, with the alarm and perhaps in a pvd finish would pretty much be the best non auto that I could think of. BTW, you're not from the East Neuk are you?

Many thanks Eric, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Quite a few people in the comments have asked about the strap, and I agree that it looks great. Unfortunately, it's also the most uncomfortable strap I've ever worn, so I swapped it out for a NATO strap. Honestly, though, I think that one of the great things about the watch is that it will look good on most straps - so you can have a lot of fun experimenting. Best regards, Robert

I've got the flight master. Really cool watch. I'm not a big fan of busy dials but for some reason love the flighty a lot. It has some kind of charisma to it, the more you wear it the more you actually like it and not want to take it off your wrist. Every time I put it on I actually end up wearing it for a few days in a row. Which rarely happens with my other watches apart from my Sub.
@wristwatchreflections7356

Hi, yes I agree. I'll end up with one at some point. For me the main advantage that the flightmaster has over something like this, and that I should really have mentioned in the video, is that it's a more adaptable accessory. You can't really wear this one (in any of the colour options) with anything, or on any strap, but you only have to watch a few of TGV's videos with his flightmaster to see how adaptable it is. Thanks for commenting! Best regards, Robert

@@wristwatchreflections7356: So true. The Flightmaster has a charisma, that x-factor that I didn’t feel in the ssc017. I sold my Ssc017 due to its larger size and feel. I definitely like the look of it but it was too bulky for my 6-5/8 wrist. The Flightmaster has a more adaptable look that tends to be a little less “sporty” or casual.

Hi Aditya, thanks very much! I did get this strap on eBay, and it looks beautiful, but it's extremely uncomfortable and digs into the wrist, so I can't recommend it. I'm sure you can find a similar one, but I've actually put the watch on a NATO strap in a similar dark blue colour since making this video. I recommend NATO straps rather than these rubber ones, because they are much more secure, and will keep the watch on your wrist even if one spring bar breaks entirely. Thanks for watching! Thanks for that Kieren, funnily enough TGV recently discussed the rising price in a video, and suggested that the model had been discontinued, as a reason. Hey man sweet video, such a beautiful time piece, i have a question for you. Do you think this watch will fit a 6 and a half inch wrist? I'm planing to buy this watch, with the stainless steel bracelet, black bezel and red accents, but it seems to be quite a big watch, i have a Casio Duro Marlin (44.2mm in diameter w/out the crown, 12.1mm height, 48.5 lug to lug) and it fits me perfectly. What do you think?
@wristwatchreflections7356

Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video! If you're happy with your current watch at 44.2mm in diameter, you should have no problems with this one. My wrist is smaller than 6 and a half inches, and this fits me very well. I haven't seen any other reviewers complain about the width either - although some people don't like the height of the watch. Best regards, Robert

I'm glad that you're glad that i enjoyed your video hahaha. Well, the main concern that i had was with the length of the lugs because of my small wrist, that's my pet peeve hahaha, i hate when the lugs are longer that the width of my wrist (not because of the looks of the watch) and it's a little bit uncomfortable, but the lugs of this watch are curved down, so i think i'll give it a try. And concerning the height of the watch, i just LOVE when dive watches are a little bit taller than usual, except those huge Invictas, 15mm is my limit hahaha. Thanks for the info by the way, keep up the great work. My best regards, Fernando.

Robert - are you still out here - it's 2018 - April - I was going to try to purchase one of these at my local Fred Meyers but now I find that they have discontinued their handling of Seiko watches - they have a charge / credit program that I, on a "FIXED" Income could actually handle. I don't suppose you would know of another retail establishment that would permit me to purchase on "Time" - I currently have a Seiko chrono 100meter watch that I got in 2010 and the luminosity is still quite sufficient - as is the accuracy - far surpassing the Rolex Submariner that I had for a while on Both Counts. I am, among other things, a HAM, so I actually keep track and set my watch by Greenwich Mean Time and my Seiko maintains accuracy MUCH BETTER than my Rolex Ever Did --- Snortin' Morton

I liked the Seiko Solar Diver so much, I bought 2 (an all black, and a Pepsi). I recommend it bigly. I also wear a Flighty (thank you,TVG).While it does have a seriously complicated dial, you gotta admit, it just looks COOL. It's an homage (rip-off) of one of the Breitling Navitimers; same size, same 12,6,9 sub-dials. Seiko watches can be some serious pieces; lots of bang for the buck. And where else can you get an Breitling clone (which won't melt on your arm in the rain) for 3% the cost of the real thing?
@wristwatchreflections7356
7 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Funnily enough, TGV recently reviewed a newer version of the Solar Diver as well (the Pepsi, if I remember correctly). Personally, I don't understand why I like the yellow and black Flightmaster that TGV has so much (I will end up picking one up at some point), because all the other versions I've seen, particularly the blue one, leave me cold, and I'm not even a Navitimer fan either (I respect it, just not my thing). Strange, the difference that a colour scheme and some minor design details can make. Best regards, Robert

I have this watch. Overall, I love it. The date is very difficult to read and the blue hand on the minutes totalizer at six o’clock is difficult to see in anything other than ideal lighting. The red and yellow color schemes eliminate this issue. If I ever replace this watch, I will get the yellow model.

All true Jeffery. I love the blue for reasons of personal aesthetic preference, and am not a fan of red or yellow, but I would definitely go with red or yellow if visibility/legibility were my main concerns. I can't remember if I mentioned how small the date window is, in the video. It doesn't look out of place on the busy dial, but it certainly isn't easy to read. Best regards, Robert

If you use the chronograph to get the 'automatic' experience, doesn't the chronograph stop after 60 minutes?
@wristwatchreflections7356
6 жыл бұрын
Great question! Yes, that's my assumption, although I've never tested it for that long - but I can't see any reason why the chronograph would keep going after 60 minutes, because the totaling sub-dial wouldn't be of any use after that point. Best regards, Robert
@chripaulzi
4 жыл бұрын
The chronographs on the watches I've tested(including the flightmaster) do not stop at the 60 minutes mark, they keep going. From that point on you must remember you many times it has counted and add the numbers to find the total. Although, I do not see why you would use the chronograph to time something that lasts for over an hour. You can just look at the time at the begin and one more at the end. You don't need the exact seconds to tell you've been waiting over an hour. You know... Like most people do.

I don't remotely care whether 'people' in general either watch my videos or don't watch them. If I did, I would promote my channel, change the style and format from a clearly non-commercial one, etc). I make my content so that the specific people who will enjoy it, can. If that isn't you, then you should be watching content that you do enjoy, instead. When I said "don't watch videos that bore you", I wasn't being glib or snapping back at you, and I wasn't offended.
