Last night I watched an episode of Seinfeld where George's employer thought he was handicapped and decided to help George out with his handicap by giving him a personal bathroom, and installing stairlifts for him; eventually got him a Rascal - a motorized wheelchair. Well, this episode not only got me belly laughing but it also reminded me of an experience I had at Sam's Club. After parking my car I greeted an elderly disabled woman who was loading her purchases. I offered to help her with her packages. She declined the help loading her car but asked if I could take her Rascal back to the store for her. Of course I said yes but as soon as I got into the Rascal I realized that it was ridiculously slow; it really struggled to go up the slight incline in the parking lot, heading to the store's front doors. I also realized how nice people were to me as I made my way up the parking lot. It was like Moses parting the Red Sea. People moved out of the way; cars stopped to allow me to cross the roadway and when I finally arrived at the front door some guy offered to give me a ride back to my car! I thanked him but explained that I wasn't handicapped and that I was just doing a good deed for a real handicapped person. I could tell by the look on his face that he didn't believe me so I limped back to the car.

same thing happened to me when i bought a scooter for my dad in Montreal. I had to get it from the showroom to my appartment (where my car was parked) about 10 blocks and so of course rode it there. Same thing happened. Moses would have been jealous. Even though i was 40 at the time, every one was buying the idea that i was scooter-ridden. Smiling, getting out of the way, saying sweet greetings. For 10 blocks i was the King of Montreal. The sidewalk was my oyster. If i had a little more nerve i would have ridden into the bagel shop and tried to get a free lunch.
