You're the man! I've been fighting a stuck locking nut for a week. I hammered on a 19mm 12-point socket and it wouldn't budge, it just worked it's way off. Then I slid a 3/4 deep socket over it, banged on it with a heavy hammer and hit it again with the impact and boom - spun right off. I've been fighting that thing for hours before watching your video.

Hi Kenny, had similar experiences as you describe here, whack socket with hammer and off she comes. Dammed alloy wheels look good but give me a steel wheel anyday particularly if it is on a 4x4. Also, if you deal with Toyota cars they use a very substantial nut with a generous shoulder that protrudes into the wheel deeper than most types, I find this quite superior to most popular designs. Great video as always fella, keep it up 👍

valuable demonstration. I was thinking "HAMMER" all the way up to your first showing of the dead blow hammer! Steel wheels not generally a problem but alloys of aluminum are like a grip surface, promoting a physical locking of the nut. If you have an old car that has had many wheel removals you will note that the seat in the wheel that engages the nut will be washed out, the grinding of the nut when tightening causes an actual removal/displacement of the wheel alloy. I use a little lube on my lug nuts and do not tighten to excess. I never have used a torque wrench since starting wrench turning in 1965, snug up firm but easy enough that you can change a wheel with a cheap lug wrench.

So the moral of this , “ Don’t let the tyre guys use they’re Impact Guns to tighten the wheels back up coz most guns don’t have Torque Settings on them, tell them to tighten them by hand with a T-bar and socket “ , coz if you get a puncture away from home you can’t put the spare on, and then you’re f#+&*d. My dad taught me to put anti-seize on the threads but not on the face 40 years ago. That was back when all wheels were steel and lug nuts were steel. I can see now how with aluminum wheels and steel lug nuts you would get and electrolysis happening causing corrosion and for them to stick together. His worry was if anti-seize was used on both the threads and the face the lug nut could come loose. Do you recommend reducing the torque by 20-30% since it is a "lubricated" thread when anti-seize is used.

I don't have one unfortunately. Those locks can be a real pain . There is a special "Twist" socket or "Stripped lug nut socket" that is designed for that purpose. Its basically for rounded out fasteners, but made for lugs . You can buy a kit on Amazon but don't by the cheap ones as they usually don't work well

If the tires are rotated each year, this won't happen 😃 because they don't have time to bond like that. The Ford F-150 lugs and wheels do this also. I bought one used and most of the nuts were totally frozen on. I told my wife I needed a much larger impact wrench lol... which got all but one of them off. I paid someone to remove the last one (used heat). I replaced all my nuts with solid ones (no dumb decorative nut cover) that are chromed. It's been years now and no problems.

5 Star Chrysler tech, yep, Chrylers lugs and rims notorious for this problem. Torque lugs nuts to spec, and still when vehicle come back for next service, lug nuts difficult to remove. Doesn't help the cover on the nut because , the nut cover , cushions the blow from the impact gun. I had 3/4 impact gun ready for times like this. Another issue, the Chrysler rims corrode very easily, builts up corrosion between the rotor and rim contributing to the problem. I have to add, that, at the dealership, I ran bigger air lines and air fittings for all my tools than everyone else at the shop. Even though the dealership worked on passenger vehicles and light trucks.

What is a wheel vs rim? Rims vs. Wheels: The wheel is the metal unit that attaches the wheel hub to an automobile via an axle, while rims are the outermost part of the wheel assembly. Perhaps think of it this way: “rim” means “edge,” and rims are located on the edges of your wheels.

Simple... I grab my IR stud breaker 1/2" impact. It comes of or I break it off. When it doesn't want to come off, I inform the customer of this problem and let them know the stud/nut will likely have to be replaced. If it does break, that's exactly what I do. If it doesn't break, I confirm the stud/nut combination is still serviceable. If not, I also replace the system. Problem solved the right way. I've never seen the steel cone locked to the aluminum where the hex head would break off before the cone loosened. Make no mistake, I am a professional who has removed 1,000's of wheels.

Tough on the wheel bearing, though. How about warming up some anti seize and squirt it in beside the nut and wheel hole, then use a punch or similar to compress the juice, by tapping on the punch. Or maybe a socket. Kinda like a pilot bushing. Then try easing the nut both directions with socket and bar. Have customer stand on brake. Try metric for the ones that lost their skins. Offer to replace them with chrome plated solid ones. Cheaper, too. Might try Liquid Wrench too. It's basically kerosene and graphite.
