12 pin flat plugs are ok , but after some use they get loose and the large pins overheat. Best to have a 7 and red and grey Anderson for your van.

It is worth noting though, if you have a 12pin plug on your caravan/trailer etc this can not be plugged into a 7pin socket on the tow vehicle. Why might you need to know this, if you breakdown and need you caravan/trailer towed by another vehicle with only a 7pin socket, there is no adapter on the market.

Some caravan manufacturers use non-standard wiring for their Auxiliary brake hydraulic pump or breakaway sense wire. If your Cavan comes with 12-pin flat from factory, make sure your car is wired with a 12 pin flat, to prevent confusion. Modern vehicles benefit from having all the wiring run at once. While it may cost more up-front to have 12-pin flat and Anderson power and ESC installed, it may be much more cost effective in the long term.

Would I be able to plug my 7 pin into a 12 pin trailer? And if I need to change my car’s plug to 12pin what needs to be done?

Hi. Does it matter if a socket with a reed switch is fitted on a car without reversing sensors.

I have a older caravan and older car, 1959 and 1957. I want a plug that looks quite period Wich appears to be metal plug 5 or 7 pin. I want to add electric brakes and charge a 100ah lithium battery in the caravan, I am not very fussed about how much charge I get in just as long as there is the option to trickle charge the house battery while travelling. I have noticed there are two thickness of 7 core cable, I usume small size is used with the small pug and large is for the large plug. I can't find a amp rating on the packets of the small or large plugs, I really want the small 7 pin round becuase it looks like a earlier plug since I am trying to keep the apearance of the van as period correct as possible. Can I put the thicker 7 core cable in a small round plug? Can I get any charge at all to the house battery while using a small 7 pin pug and electric brakes while still having a good feed to the brakes?

Trailer plugs are only capable of carrying a limited current. For battery charging, fridges and ESC, a higher-capacity plug is required. While some manufacturers will use a 12-pin plug, a range of Anderson Plugs is a better option. Your vintage vehicles are unlikely to have ESC, but to charge the battery, you would be better served with Anderson plugs hidden some where out-of-sight and use an Anderson extension lead when travelling . There is no 1950’s period-correct high-current connector because 100Ah Lithium batteries were not a thing in the late 1950s. If you have ESC retrofitted to your tow-vehicle and van, the common standard is a red-Anderson plug. You may also want to retrofit an Alternator in your tow vehicle instead of a period-correct Generator to handle the higher current draw of the battery charger.

To take advantage of the Anderson power, you will need to connect the Anderson power with 6BS cable and a 30A fuse direct to your battery. The 7-pin socket component will work just like a stand-alone 7-pin socket.
