Making your own bow might be next, that is where the selfbow obsession ends up for most of us. Go to Twin Oaks for the Classic, they have a bow building area that will get you started, I use to teach there and spent more time helping folk than I spent on the archery course.

Self bows are just so smooth. I ordered a glass bow even though I am making my own self bows. All traditional or primitive archery is fun and rewarding in all its various forms and fashions. Trying it all out will take a lifetime! I plan to do a bit of everything from carbon arrows and custom glass bow to sinew string and river cane shoot arrows.

Hey Jeff...love all the info you share and really appreciate it all. My question is, I recently have lost all feeling in my middle and ring finger, I shoot three under and have gone through several different makes of tabs as well as gloves, I shoot at a minimum of a hundred arrows a day but on many occasions shoot up to three hundred arrows. I'm not new at this but never in my 25 + years of shooting have I experienced this. Any thoughts would greatly be appreciated, I've of course over the past few weeks have had to cut down not only the number of arrows I shoot but also the number of days I shoot. Thanks for any advice.

Heres something from left field..... Sound... Does a natural bow made from 1 piece of wood, have more natural harmonics (432 hz) than say a laminated bow? For instance; According to a Double-blind Cross-over Pilot study, scientists have found that listening to music 432 Hz can decrease the heart rate and blood pressure significantly. Meditating to music at a frequency of 432 Hz has shown to increase relaxation and focus and reduce anxiety. It brings a sense of peace and researchers claim that they feel more joyful and relaxed. Listening to 432 Hz frequency can improve quality of sleep and help people stay asleep longer. Sleep is vital to a healthy lifestyle, and studies have found that adults with delayed sleep latency can benefit immensely from listening to this frequency before bed or during afternoon naps.

I made a 35# maple board bow this winter just to see if I could and work my way up to a heavier recurve.. It shoots smooth as silk. Honestly, I can't believe I pulled off my 1st one. Up next, 45-50# bamboo backed hickory.

Great question, I did recently start shooting three under again and it’s because I shoot a lot of 3D and some longer distance during the summer and I’m able to shoot both even with different bows, sometimes I just like three under better but it’s usually how the bow is tillered that determines it for me.

I have enjoyed your videos and many others over the past few weeks. I bought a beginner bow from bass pro and have been working on my shot. I decided to buy a 60" 40# W&W Black Wolf. It is on the way, and I am very excited. I wanted something that had a good reputation, easily modified while I hone my skills, and looks good, so I will shoot more often. Q: What is a good shelf material to start with? Is there anything specifics I need to do while setting up my shelf or knock Point. I'd like to set it up 3 under at 29.5" draw. 200g or more up front. What would be a good spine to start with? Gold tip arrows seem to be the most available for me. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998

Okay first you’ll love the Black Wolf and I’d set it up with calf hair on the shelf and run some 500 gold tip warriors cut to about 30.5” they’ll shoot better than 95% of any arrow you’ll find, I’m shooting warriors out of my bows for 3D and usually build some hunter XT’s for hunting, the shafts are lighter and shoot really well with decent pout weight, the traditional arrows are great too just a little heavier which is good for hunting and you’ll want your top nock at 5/8” above center, 3/4” at the most just have to shoot and watch the flight at 25-30 yards to see if they are ramping off the shelf which usually means the nock is too low causing a tail kick but those settings will be about perfect, I’d also order a good TTT string for it you’ll be very impressed!

@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998
Жыл бұрын
Thanks Rick, if I were you I’d go with a 35# just to develop your muscles which are not used with a compound and you need to develop a consistent shot process also, I really recommend the Black Hunter longbow on Amazon for about $100 and maybe shoot them for a while and then order a set of 40# limbs for it they’re only like $60 and that way you can work up to like a 45# set which is like shooting a 65# compound, you will definitely want to order a TTT string for it or at least a good fast flight Flemish twist string because the ones that come on them are noisy and just don’t do the bows justice, Amazon’s traditional arrows are very good and cheap to start out with as well, a 35# bow will probably want a 700 spine, 40# a 600 spine and 45# a 500 spine 👍🏻

Hi Jeff, you told me that the brace height should be big enough in order to get enough forgiveness. This self bow's brace height is only 7 inches, and it should not have good forgiveness according to your teaching. But you tested this self bow and found this bow was good. Does this mean that the shorter brace height bow could be still good?
@instinctiveaddictionarcher8998
Жыл бұрын
Not on regular bows, self bows are completely different, they like hill style longbows run a shorter brace height than recurves or modern longbows because of the grip design but were only talking around 1/2-3/4” difference 👍🏻
