The highest pass in the world on a national highway is the Abra del Acay or "Acay Pass" located in the Andes Mountains in the Salta Province. It is 4,885m (16,060 feet) above sea level and is part of the famous Ruta 40, a legendary road that stretches across Argentina. It’s an interesting "highway" being a narrow gravel road at the pass.
As you ascend the Acay Pass, you are rewarded with stunning panoramic views of rugged mountains, vast plateaus, and the stark beauty of the high-altitude desert landscape. The scenery on the way down is just as spectacular descending to the town of Cachi and onto the small town of Angastaco.
This is just one experience on our self drive overland adventure from the north of Chile to Ushuaia on the southern tip of Argentina, taking in over 9,000km of the remotest parts of these countries in 39 days. If you’d like to find out more, visit our website: www.selfdrivea...
