As a nurse, I am so glad to hear that your reasoning behind the weight loss is because you want to avoid diabetes, heart disease, etc. I care for many individuals that have these disease processes and they kick themselves because once you have some of these, it’s difficult or impossible to resolve and you can’t go backwards in time and change it. As we get into our wiser years, these things can greatly impact our independence, mobility, and ability to care for oneself. It’s heartbreaking to see those struggle with losing that independence and the families that must try and compensate for their loved one’s new needs. Our health journeys are personal, but the impact can be felt by all those around you later on in life. I wish you all the best of luck and the strength to keep moving towards your health goals, Shelly. In the meantime, you’ve got an entire comment section of people cheering you on!

I am lucky to have been able to stay on a very low dose for my journey, but I have been very diligent in making sure I make exercise and diet a habit so that I don't fall right back into old habits. For me this is the only way I think this makes sense, to focus on reshaping the way I view and think of a healthy lifestyle that involves exercise and eating healthy as normal. It’s crazy, because back when I worked in a fried chicken restaurant in the mid-90s, my insurance was $15 every two weeks and it paid 100% of everything. No deductible. No copays. Never denied me a single thing ever. Now I’m paying hundreds of dollars a month for a family, have a $4,000 deductible and copays every time I turn around, and they tried to deny my husband spinal fusion surgery which he desperately needed. Doc helped push that through. Why are we paying drastically more now for much worse coverage? 😡

Somehow, I had missed your video about being on semiglutide. Congratulations to you on your weight loss!!! I had recognized that you were losing weight. Although I'm a bit older than you (I'm 61), you are total inspiration. I, too, have dealt with being overweight throughout my life. In my 30's I gained to being just over 300 pounds. I am 5'1". My daughter at the time was only 5 and my doctor had a real "come to Jesus" talk with me. She explained that if I didn't lose a significant amount of weight due to the health problems I was already having, she could easily guarantee that I would definitely not live long enough to see my daughter married. She then explained that because of certain health problems, it would be very likely that I would not live to see her through high school. Needless to say, that was a huge wakeup call! I am an actress and had a couple of years prior to that and 40+ pounds less, I had been in a series of videos for a bariatric surgery practice where we then lived in Salt Lake City. Of course, at that time, that was the last thing I felt like I wanted. But I learned a lot about bariatric surgery doing those videos. I had learned that that particular practice had all of their patients go thru numerous psychological tests and at least 3 months of therapy before being OK'd for surgery. They also required that their patients go on the post-surgery diet for at least a couple months so they would see what life regarding food would be like post surgery. So, although I was in videos for a practice in Utah, we now lived outside Boston and I decided to go thru gastric bypass in Boston. That was in 1998. The doctor I chose in Boston did not have anywhere near the psych requirements, nor the dietary requirements prior to surgery. Nor did they have any post-surgery support groups of any kind. Fortunately, I did my best to go on a post-gastric bypass surgery for just over a month and had found a good therapist on my own. Long story short (OOPS, too late😉), I lost 143 pounds until the gastric bypass spigot turned off. I lost a bit more weight by sheer force of will, and basically kept it all off until about 2005. At that point, the food noise was so loud and so constant that I began to gain weight again. I continued to gain weight thru moves back to Utah and then to New Jersey where we now live (all due to my husband's work). Last year, I found a wonderful concierge doctor (which fortunately I can barely afford) who is also a life coach. When I weighed in her office the first time last August, I weighed 274. When I heard your highest weight, I felt an amazing connection! At that time, I had just gone over the diabetic line. Although I did not yet require insulin, I was a diabetic. Fortunately, our insurance would cover me going on Mounjaro. By the end of 2023, I was down 32 pounds. My insurance then decided that they would no longer cover Mounjaro, but would cover Ozempic if I was still diabetic. Having been on Mounjaro and lost a few of the pounds that were needed, my bloodwork showed that I was no longer diabetic, but just under that line with my glucose and A1C. I was lucky to have an amazing doctor who had already referred me to a pulmonary sleep specialist, a cardiologist, and then had me see an endocrinologist. Between her contacting all of these specialists and getting letters from each of them and submitting her own info, my insurance has allowed me to be on Ozempic. I am currently on 2.5 mg weekly and to date have lost 68 pounds. My 61-year old arthritic knees have needed replacements since I was in my 40's, but I've seen way too many overweight friends almost crippled because of not being able to recover from knee replacements fully. I've lived almost 20 years on supplements, a few prescriptions, knee injections, and physical therapy. My knees feel so much better without that 68 pounds. I've decided that although my orthopedic surgeon will do the surgery when I am under 200 lbs., I will wait until I've gotten down to 150 so I have a better chance of full recovery. Seeing that I haven't been able to use stairs for the past 6 years. (I slipped on some ice and am so glad I hadn't had replacements because that would have wrecked them). All tolled, I am with you in support and spirit as you go thru your own journey. Having the food noise lessened and almost zero has been so amazing. Just 2 months ago, I was finally diagnosed with ADHD. I've been put on medication and have found that my obsessive compulsive nature around food and all the food noise is completely gone. Of course, I'm also finding how "normal" people feel and how they get so much done without starting so many "side quests." It has all been an incredible journey. I am blessed to have a spouse who has been immensely supportive (although not without his own problems in other addictions), my daughter (who is lesbian BTW) and my son are both so loving and supportive. Unfortunately, I didn't model a very positive relationship with food, and they are both overweight. I just know from what my parents did that I do not comment about their weight, and only periodically about mine. My daughter lives with her wife in Baltimore, and my son recently moved cross country to live with us until he can afford his own place. I am so blessed to have all of them. And also feel so grateful to "meet" you via KZitem. Thank you again for being so inspirational in so many ways! I love your channel and how you relate to all of us on the other side of your camera. Keep up ALL the great work!

Thank you so much for sharing your story! Let's both never see 274 again unless it's a winning lottery number or something! One of the many reasons I felt like I had to do something NOW before I got worse was my knees and hips. I started getting pain that was limiting my physical activity, which even though I'm big, I've always been fairly active, so I knew decreasing my activity would be the kiss of death. Even just the 44 pounds has helped tremendously in decreasing my joint pain. I've had knee injuries on top of just being heavy for decades so I suspect somewhere in my 50s, I'll probably have to have surgery, but I think it's less imminent now.

Hi Shelly, Great update on your weight loss on Semaglutide. I love how opened and honest you are. For me, I have always been “Thin” when working as a Nurse at a hospital, I got so sick of other nurses accusing me of being anerexic. My dad was a very petite hard core marine, I was built just like him. Narrow hips etc. I was obsessed with working out ( great stress reliever) and I loved how lifting weights made me feel. I also jogged 4 mi/ day. The heaviest I’ve been is 135( during pregnancy). Here Iam at 63 now, 5’4 and weigh 102. I don’t know why I’m losing weight, but I am recovering from 6th major spinal cord surgery and have chronic horrible back pain and with that I have no appetite. I’ve always been on a high protein low fat diet. So, I’m like you in that I prefer to be invisible. Yet my bestie told me a few weeks ago, “Karla, you have Butt”. Ever since I am so self conscious of that being so true. I use to be called Bubble Butt, now I’m no assatol. Oh well, but Iam so ready and got released to start working out as I have lost so much muscle mass. It’s so hard going thru our adult life either being one that Over Eats and or one that Under eats. You’re beautiful just as you are Shelly. I am so proud of you for being consistent nd determined to get and stay healthy. Because as we age, it does get harder be it to lose weight and or gain weight. Love your transparency about your weight loss journey. I have added into my daily ( almost daily) making smoothies with fresh fruits/ greens, organic protein plant based powder with greens almond milk Greek yogurt. I can really feel. Difference in my energy level etc when I am drinking one daily. They have really helped ease fatigue. I thank you for not only sharing, but educating us on the struggles of losing weight being in our minds. Same goes for ( I feel) being under weight and struggles to gain healthy weight. Hope all your labs come back within normal levels and you do a video sharing what you Dr. says and your labs. You’ve got this Shelly. 50 in 2 mo’s. I remember when I turned 50. And I really think the old saying is so try life begins at 50. Cant wait to hear how your Formulation Classes are coming along. You’ve not mentioned anything about them in awhile. 😊

OMG! I can't believe I found you!! I just turned 50 in June. I have been fighting my weight since grade school. Jr. High and High school were brutal as a heavier teen. I have LITERALLY tried everything out there that there is to try! Every diet, every exercise program, every magazine and infomercial scam. I have owned all the videos, Tony Little, Jane Fonda, every single Richard Simmons workout video... (RIP). I even had gastric sleeve in 2017, I went from 323 to 204 in about 12 months time, never made it on "Onederland" :( only to put 75% of it back on since. You just taught me a new term that I KNOW is my downfall....."food noise". It is constant with me. From the time I wake up till the time I physically fall asleep I have food noise, and I have never known how to explain it until now. I have also lost 100 lbs. several times in my life only to put it back on and more. I have for the most part given up. I am 50, 5'7 and 285 lbs. When I had my surgery, I didn't look healthy at 204, so my goal weight is like 220. May not be a "healthy weight", but way better than today's weight. My health care provider has mentioned Ozempic/Wegovy, buy I baulked at the price and no insurance coverage, so I am curious and will be doing some research on these spas that are mentioned. I would LITERALLY do anything to not be morbidly obese and watch my grandkids grow and have families of their own. I have an appointment on September 12th with my primary for my annual visit. He brought it up my last visit, but I can't afford $1,000 a month. :( I can however afford the road you are going to obtain it. ANYWAYS, I am just grateful that I came across your you tube, and am excited once again to possibly lose some weight. I will be researching "food noise" and all that entails. Just a massive THANK YOU.

If your insurance doesn't cover it, your doctor might be able to do something similar!

I completely resonate with your talk of food noise. I have only been a few months on semaglutides (got a diabetes diagnosis, sadly, but at least that means I get it on the cheap, especially seeing as I am neither American nor live in the US). I did not realize that "food noise" existed until I started taking Rybelsus (now Mounjaro). So this is what "normal" people must feel like! I am absolutely gobsmacked and thrilled, albeit gassy AF (haha!). Cheers for sharing your progress. Perhaps I might do the same at some point!

Congratulations. You are doing wonderfully. Ignore the numbers and listen to your body. I have been on semaglutide for 10 months. I have lost 60 lbs. I am 65 years old. I am now on half the insulin I used to take before this journey began. I had a lot of side effects namely nausea and some vomiting for the first 3 months or so. My doctor kept me at the same dosage for 2 months at a time instead of increasing monthly. It worked great. I take 1.0 units weekly now. I would like to lose another 15 lbs as that would put me in the middle of the so called normal range. I definitely recommend muscle building exercises and as much protein as you can comfortably eat. Lastly, I take collagen supplements and I have found it has improved my crepey droopy skin. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing.

Your videos have been helpful for me and aspects of my experience mirror yours. I never realized I had food noise until it was gone. I have a very high stress job and i see now that while I didn't eat excessive amounts of food, I was absolutely reaching for foods like chocolate or cheese every day to try and mitigate my mood. I'm relieved not to NEED that anymore. My weight loss progress has been pretty slow--only about 5lbs in 7wks. But I am absolutely much slimmer looking and feeling. I can wear certain pairs of stretch jeans without them wiggling down due to muffin top. I can get my calves into boots again. For the past year I thought I had terrible lymphatic drainage issues, which may still be a component, and the GLP-1 has really resolved it. My body feels relaxed rather than stuffed tight. My heaviest was 179. I started the medication at 174. If I can get to 155 I will be over the moon and would like to hope maybe I could stick around there without the drug someday, but we'll see. it really is a game changer and I hope I stay side effect free. I do have those days like you mentioned where I hardly want anything and Im getting better about making sure I have something anyway.

My best suggestion is to prioritize that strength training. Becoming stronger makes easier to move. It is a joy to move more, walk more, and feeling like dancing all day. It will also improve the sagging skin. I'm not on semaglutide, (I tried lyraglutide in the 2010s and side effects were devastating for me, so not feeling like trying the sema for very personal reasons) I'm about your age, and pandemic was awful for me in terms of gaining weight due to lack of activity. Now I'm mostly prioritising protein and going to the gym 3 hours once or twice per week, two hours of strength training and one of not too intense cardio. (Not a begginner, so more sessions of 40 mins may work better for a beginner) Lost 15 kilos in the first 6 months, and I'm now stuck in weight for a few months, but kept losing sizes, from a tight XXL to L. It is body recomposition, and I can feel my strength now, being able to get up springing up, and carrying anything easily. I can walk uphill without feeling exhausted. A month of toothache helped me restart my relationship with food. I'm now eating a daily mini treat and still losing fat. I think weight will come off in the next phase, (splitting my strength training, going 3 to 4 times per week, and making it half slow cardio) and I'm looking forward for it as i want to be able to jump again. I mean really jumping. Right now I'm kind to my joints by not doing much, but giving time now to flexibility training. I'm having a protein shake every time I go to the gym, adding collagen and creatine, and adding konjac powder if it is a hungry day. This are sustainable things as I plan to keep my lifestyle this way. But really, I cannot tell you how important is to do the strength training. It is life changing, and semaglutide or not, having a healthy amount of muscle mass will help you a lot maintaining your lifestyle changes, your energy and improving your quality of life. Meal prepping is also key, having healthy food handy when hunger strikes is the best way to keep the good balance of the day, week and month, so you can trust the caloric level of maintenance will be always met without sacrificing. Congratulations on your process, you are rocking it, and thank you so much for sharing your experiences. Oh, almost forgot, check Reinassance Periodization channel, there are some old videos about gaining muscle awhile losing weight, free masterclasses, the guy has a lovely twisted sense of humour and all the best science based advice. As I bodybuilt in my youngest life, it brought back my passion to hit the gym now armed with updated strategies. We may not be the target audience, but the info is gold. Just remember to be kind to your body and start slow and careful, and adding a bit more (a bit of time, or a bit of intensity or a bit of reps or bell numbers, whatever it is easier for you) every visit to the gym. Wishing you the best of success!

Just subbed to your channel!! I don't even know many veg people let alone anyone on a GLP1 med. I'm so glad you commented! I've been vegan for a year here, a year there... I don't like cooking which usually leads to me going back to the dairy-for-protein train (since I eat out a fair bit and not in a very vegan-friendly area). I can see myself being a more long-term vegan in retirement when I can actually take time to cook. I feel like I apologize to the cows constantly.

So I have found a lot of quick and easy vegan things to cook, often just in the air fryer or microwave. But since I just started this new channel, I still have a lot to post and long ways to go! I’m also pretty bummed that I’m currently on 7.5 Zepbound and my weight keeps going up and down. I felt like I was doing much better on the 5 mg. I’m only a couple yrs older than you but your life experiences with weight loss and gain almost mirror mine. Ive never had high bp or cholesterol and never been a diabetic. I am at my highest weight ever- in the 300’s. And have also lost over 100 lbs 4x, always gaining it back +. So very frustrating… a disappointing cycle that can lead to depression. I always thought everyone thought about food and eating all the time until I was on Phentermine 15 years ago, and my food noise disappeared. I was shocked!! My insurance won’t cover semiglutide injections either. But my doc was able to give me a 1 month sample of Wegovy about 2 months ago, and I lost almost 20lbs! Unfortunately, she doesn’t always have samples packs. And obviously I’m not her only patient. She would write me an Rx but I can’t afford to pay out-of-pocket. Even so, I want to thank you for sharing your experiences with us. It’s rare I find anyone who truly understands my life’s hurdles with weight loss/gain. Also, the way you talk about this is SO similar to the way many ADHD people talk about stimulants. Once you find the right med/right dose...it CAN feel like magic at times. It doesn’t mean it fixes all your problems, and it doesn’t mean you won't have "bad" days (and of course there are unfortunately some people that just can't take them or handle side effects). But that WHOA THIS IS HOW MY BRAIN CAN FEEL!? contrast to how it feels untreated...it's wild.

Thanks for putting this out there, I’m so glad I happen upon it. You said something that I’ve never heard before and I stopped what I was doing, went back and listened to it three times, and that was “food noise…” I don’t think I’ve ever resonated with something so much in my life. I always lose, and subsequently gain weight back, thinking the food noise would go away. But it never does, regardless of my body size. I think I’ve had constant food noise my entire life and I’m in my early 50s. I’m curious to know what life would be like without it? I can’t afford this medication, but I’m glad that people are benefiting from it. Congrats on your success and freedom from the noise.

The food noise is still wild to me. I wish I could better explain it. 9 months in, I get a lot of comments both on KZitem and in "real" life that I seem "happier" now that I'm losing weight - and I don't think I'm "happier" because I was happy prior (as far as emotions and day to day life go), but the absence of the food noise makes me so much less DISTRACTED! I feel like I definitely have more clarity and focus in my mind just in general. I'm guessing that what other people are seeing as "happy" is the relief from the distracting noise. It's wild. I wish I could explain it better!
@liveyurbliss

@@goow for me, you don’t need to explain it better because “food noise” is all encompassing and exactly what my struggle is, in 2 simple words. It’s quite brilliant actually. It’s the addict in my head that wants sugar from the moment I wake up until just before I go to bed; It’s the constant searching for food in my environment to manage my emotions; it’s the drug that is there whether I’m happy or sad day in and day out… It’s my best friend and my worst enemy and the reason I wish I could close my eyes and not wake up on so many days. The food noise. You have explained it so well. I'm also on a weight loss med ( Munjaro) and here in the UK is more affordable. All my life i've been trying to stay skinny and recently with entering menopause I've gained so much weight and though not obese I've been feeling rather unwell ( no energy and loss of self esteem ). I like you want to stay on this peptide forever. Dr Tyna has an interest take on this...it's like HRT you don't need to come off it ...but it's been 2 months for me so when I reach my ideal weight I will need to start coming off and on....like hormones. GLP-1 is a physiological incretin hormone and I do believe some of us are deficient and when we get older and enter perimenopause we become even more depleted of them

You are singing my song. I agree 💯 with the food noise, old brain issue. I work from home and I ate mindlessly at first and then it became habitual. I would grab a box of cereal plop down in front of the computer and eat half the box. Then without even noticing within the hour I would have a bag of chips. I restocked my pantry weekly. I thought my family was plowing through the snacks. Well since I have been on compound semaglutide we haven’t restocked (3 1/2 weeks). This is when I realized it was me by myself plowing through the snacks not my family. Honestly I will never not be happy with the results from semaglutide. I have more energy, a better brain, and no side effects. Win/win. Thanks for sharing your positive story time.

I’m on Mounjaro for diabetes. I Don’t count calories either as I’m over it and it really hurts my mental health (I obsess over it). My true hunger fluctuates too. Some days I eat more and some days less. I had a DEXA scan in 2009 for weight loss surgery and I remember it saying my ideal weight was 155 lbs (I’m 5’4”). The bariatric center gave me a goal of 170 lbs. We also have to keep in mind excess skin weight too (I have lots of loose skin). I used to want to have the skin removed but I am fine with it unless I start having issues with it. HW: 330 lbs CW: 175 lbs (lowest ever adult weight) BTW I weighed 100 lbs at 6 years old. I’m smaller now than when I was in 6th grade. I want to have another SCAn and work on increasing muscle as well.

I went for gastric sleeve. Lost 20lbs in the last 24 days after surgery. Insurance will pay out if BMI is 35 with health conditions or 40 with no health conditions. It's a long process to go through, at least 6 mths of tests etc prior to surgery. You have to do weight loss classes and shakes. Get bloodwork done, ekg, psych eval. It's not an easy path. I'm still recovering but the surgery went extremely well. I need to lose another 60 lbs to get to my goal weight, but I would be good if I lost another 40lb.

I was over 40 BMI when I started but now am at 38 (with no health conditions). It has always surprised me that no doctor has ever discussed other interventions with me - though when I started with my current doctor, I had just moved here and had just finished losing 100 pounds, so I was not overweight for the first few years.

@@goow My primary physican referred me after diet tablets and ozempic didn't work. Oddly enough I specifically stated that I was worried at the rate I was going, I would need bariatric surgery. In response, she immediately referred me. I was 35 bmi with high cholesterol, high blood pressure and was pre-diabetic. Already I've lost enough that at a month later, if I tried to get the surgery, I would no longer qualify as I've lost now close to 1lb per day. They removed part of the stomach that has ghrelin, “the hunger hormone,” and GLP1, a hormone which reduces appetite and regulates glucose metabolism, so it's not just the stomach being smaller that helps the weight loss but that too.
