WELCOME TO TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO 101 with TRINI SURFER!
In this video we take a closer look at Sena bay in Balandra!
Adjoining Balandra Bay on the northern side lies Sena Bay, a breathtaking bay with an untouched coastline. For its approximately one-kilometer length, the beach boasts golden brown sand backed by coconut trees that climb the gentle slope. The waves roll into the gradual U shape of the bay, creating a serene atmosphere. The absence of houses and the sweep of sand and coconut trees encourage visitors to stroll along its entire length.
Unlike other bays on Trinidad’s northeast coast, Sena Bay has a gradual U shape rather than a deep indentation. The Atlantic Ocean flows into this bay, bringing natural driftwood washed up onto the beach by the ocean currents. These longshore currents flow northward, with wave heights averaging 180 centimeters. Sena Bay is hazardous for swimming due to the absence of lifeguards, but its beauty makes it a delightful spot for picnics.
The constant wind-driven waves create an ideal surfing location, making the southern end of Sena Bay a popular spot for surfers. However, surfers must exercise caution and do so at their own risk. On most weekends, you’ll find individuals surfing at the bay, a mix of locals and visitors from other parts of Trinidad. The southern end also attracts surf fishermen, and you can find more information on fishing at the fishing page.
The easiest access to Sena Bay is through Balandra Bay. Drive down Balandra Bay Road to the end and then walk along the beach, passing the fishing depot. The headland that forms the southern end of Sena Bay is the same headland that defines Balandra Bay. After passing the fishing depot and the small stream beside it, you’ll find a gentle footpath that crosses the headland, leading you onto Sena Bay. Alternatively, some individuals choose to park on Toco Main Road and use the paths from the main road that lead onto the beach.
Unlike Balandra Bay, Sena Bay is rarely crowded. On weekends, apart from surfers, there are usually only a few people picnicking on the beach. On weekdays, the beach offers a serene and beautiful seclusion.
