when I was a sophomore in high school my school had its first shooting threat. The school was notified that right when the bell rang between classes, there would be a shooting. We were not told this until after we arrived at school, but the school knew and still had us come to school. They increased security as if that would make us feel safer. I remember the dread leading up to the bell. I had to walk from one side of the school to the other (literally the longest distance between classes) and had my eyes glued to each exit I passed in case I needed to escape. I felt like a pig awaiting slaughter in my own high school. Crowds of us could easily have been gunned down before the “extra security” could even react. Most people went home before the school day ended in fear. The worst part is that it felt like an inevitable experience.

We MUST limit the number of guns a person can own. We MUST do better background checks. There is so much we can do. It won't solve the entire problem of murders in the U. Second restricting the number of firearms some one can own won't stop mass shootings. You could ban firearms but then you're treading on the 2nd amendment which you can't do. This isn't an issue with firearms this is an issue of a mental health crisis that we keep ignoring. Almost all these mass shootings could have been prevented as there were more than enough warning signs but no one took action. We have a mental health crisis in this nation. It doesn't help that millions of Americans are struggling and are unhappy. Which compounds the mental health crisis issues. We need to be addressing the mental health issues in this nation. Assault is a verb, not a noun. The Term is a political catch phrase, improperly used by the gun grabbers to demonize the semi automatic rifle, to those uneducated in firearms. @@deannarounds3295 We've known from the beginning how to prevent these mass shootings. The day after this mass-murder took place at a GUN-FREE zone, a similar scenario happened in Charleston, WV. A man pulled up to a graduation party taking place outside an apartment complex and opened fire on the crowd with his rifle. No one was injured....do you know why? Because an ARMED woman drew her pistol and returned fire, killing the attacker and saving the rest of the students/families. See the difference? Hmmm....

As a Canadian…. I can’t understand how nothing is being done about this reoccurring problem in the USA. If they choose to do nothing about gun laws there, then they should at least have hired police officers at every single school across the nation protecting the children and teachers in case someone happens to do this sort of thing. They do nothing to fix this problem when there could very well be solutions.

How about committing to actually enforcing gun laws already in effect across the United States? That would be something. The real carnage and slaughter is happening every single day, being played out over and over again in major cities across the United States. I am a child of the 80s. Never had to deal with anything like this. Worst case it was a fire drill. Now today you have class rooms with bullet resistant doors. Two way dead bolt locks in class rooms to keep people out. I never need an assault rifle to hunt deer or rabbits. I was raised with hunting and fishing. It was a way of providing additional food., a tradition passed down. Call it what you want. It taught me respect for what I held in my hands. I’m also a republican. And I am in total agreement with everything this man just said. What are we doing? I wake up in NYC every morning, It’s another shooting followed by another shooting here or there on the news. Now these babies. Yes they were babies? The shooting in Buffalo, that man never should of had access. The guy who just shot and killed a man just sitting in the subway here, with no warning. Never should of had a gun. You have a say. Lobby your time or effort. Call your senators. Demand action. Vote for your children’s future. It’s the people who have the guns or access too , that pull the trigger are the bigger threat. Gun access is second and needs to be addressed. We need to find a way to keep them out of their hands. Something must of been off with this kid who did the shooting. And maybe the system failed him as well? I’m not saying I’m right and you may disagree with me. I respect your right too. But let’s find somewhere to meet in the middle!

It is time to pass laws that make weapons of war unavailable to those that are irresponsible and immature. It is long overdue. I am well aware of the Second Amendment and the position of the NRA. I myself grew up with guns in my home and was taught how to use them safely. However, those guns were not assault rifles or weapons of war with multiple rounds magazines which can kill many in seconds. Enough is enough.
