If I'm in the wrong lane when I wanted to turn/exit, I just eat my loss and try again. Sometimes you're in a new place, trying to read signs and pay attention to navigation.. just reroute if you mess up, it's not that hard, and it's not worth whipping into another lane and hitting someone just because you dont want to take 2-3 more minutes getting back on track. The only reason i dont like round abouts is because I don't trust others to yield. Sooo many times I've actively been in the loop and someone will almost hit me as they pull into it when they should have been stopped, and I have to hit the brakes. If it wasn't for the "last clear chance" doctrine, the spiteful part of me would let them hit me, but I always see it coming because i expect it.
@Widdershyn
3 ай бұрын
This precisely. So many people want to last minute "fix" their mistake when it takes less time and is less hazardous for everyone if they just went a little further and either rerouted or found a spot to properly get out of traffic and turn around to go back to the original route. Watch people slam on their brakes, last-minute turn signals, and a sudden backup that everyone else has to deal with because of a mistake that could've been fixed so much easier. Whether you are familiar with the roundabout lanes or not, it really is as simple as "look to the left and yield." If you don't get it right the first time? Great news! There's a bunch of parking lots in that area. Turn into one and turn around lol

US Roundabouts are not designed properly. Designers could you a trip overseas to understand how they are supposed to work. Looking at this roundabout the problem is clear. It is inconsistent. The outer lane has different rules as does the inner lane depending on where you are in the roundabout. This creates a unique roundabout which people need to understand before driving into and one where one lane is forced to exit sometimes, and sometimes it isn't. That's a fatal flaw: all roundabouts should work the same, so that if you learn one, you learn all of them. Only in America do you design custom bespoke rules for each lane. No wonder it is causing accidents.

This is a so called turbo roundabout. It is actually a very good design, but it seems like they have missed putting up signs before and in the roundabout with arrows how you should drive in each lane. Drivers need to know which lane to chose in advance and to stick to it. One of the benefits of this design is that you should not switch lanes once you are in the roundabout, from then you just stick to your lane til you are "thrown out". Also one benefit of all types of roundabouts is that the crashes are far less severe than in a regular intersection (eg. no head on collisions and slower speeds for all).

Hilarious how the WSDOT engineer is still trying to sell us their wacky solution even after it quadrupled accidents the year it was completed, and is headed towards more than 6 times the number of accidents that occurred in that intersection before it was built. - 43 accidents in 2022 - 162 accidents in 2023 - 92 accidents January-April of 2024 (est. 276 for 2024) I live in that area and like the barista, look for ways to avoid the Hwy 9 roundabouts because they're insane. 🤡 Always use the back entrance to Frontier Village out the back end of the Target parking lot. But if you think those two back-to-back roundabouts on Hwy 9 are nuts, you should see the one they put in a couple of blocks behind on Vernon Road by the Walgreens. If you're headed north on 91st and want to turn left onto Vernon Road, you first have to go right onto Vernon, then make an awkward hairpin U-turn around a sharp corner of concrete barrier to get onto Vernon headed west. Scientists like to smugly remind us that "anecdotes aren't data," but this whole story is proof that "data ain't reality," either.

The number of accidents has no correlation to the severity. Any kind of roundabout saves lives, as they slow down everybody and you don't have oncoming traffic (no head on collisions). Would you rather have fewer but deadlier crashes or more but milder where you mosrly just beat up the car? Besides, when most locals have learned how it works, those numbers will also go down. But they should put up signs with arrows how each lane continues through the roundabout so people understand it without looking at the painted arrows. And an instruction to just stay in your lane, as they have a designated path.

A roundabout is single lane traffic circle with operating speeds of 10 mph - 15 mph using yield merge traffic metering. Double lane traffic circles are not roundabout and are dangerous. They are not included in statistics for roundabouts. A roundabout is always detrimental to traffic flow of the primary road over a traffic light. If two roads are near equal in traffic volume with ponderous amounts of left turning traffic that is good use of a roundabout. That is not common and roundabouts have further detriments of disorientation and nausea which makes travel more painful. In Europe there are high speed traffic circles known as rotaries. These have long yield merge areas with large diameters. A roundabout will process traffic faster than an all way stop controlled intersection where it is common for there to be two or more cars waiting. For high speed roads with speed limits above 40 mph the time slowing down for a 15 mph roundabout then going slower through it becomes about the same as for a quick stop and go at a stop sign. People pushing for traffic circles are secretly pushing for traffic calming devices that discourage through traffic. Any significant benefit from traffic calming devices comes from the reduction in the volume of traffic by pushing it onto other roads or discouraging travel. Roundabouts push liability over to drivers verses traffic lights. Governments like that. Roundabouts encourage persons to run into them with the slightest gap expecting hyper vigilant traffic in the circle to avoid them. I've seen that behavior transfer to blowing through side street stop signs into non hyper vigilant primary road traffic that T-boned the car.
