California’s almond-growing region covers over 1 million acres and is where 80% of the world’s almonds are produced, valued at more than $10 billion. The entire industry relies heavily on migratory bees from across our nation for pollination, without which there would be no almonds. Almond growers contract beekeepers to truck in hives from across the country to provide pollination services. Each year during the flowering season, 1.6 million bee hives are placed in California’s almond orchards.
During the last week of January and first week of February a mass migration of honey bees head to the central valley of California. The California Almond industry requires around 2 Million colonies to pollinate their crop. They need the very strongest colonies to pollinate thousands of acres of trees.
Here is a video of our crew getting the bees ready for the long trip last week. Hope you enjoy it!
