Get Them Here ===== amzn.to/1awcZh2 =====
First, let me get a couple of interesting points out of the way.
1. These are supposed to be over the ear type of headphones (or circumaural for those of you familiar with the term). The Sennheiser site actually has conflicting information on this so if you're looking there you'll see that in the url it says "on ear" headphones - this isn't (supposed to be) the case - these are supposed to go around your ears - they are elongated and a bit narrow so some people might find that they barely fit around your ear unless you cram your ear in there. On the technical data page of the HD 449's on Sennheiser's site, this information is correct, but on caption of the image and in the url, the information incorrectly displays "on ear"
2. Another thing that's mentioned in the url is "noise canceling" - this also is not really the case - these are noise isolating which their information on the page shows properly - these isolate you from outside noise a bit, but there is no noise canceling built into the headphones
Now that those things are out of the way, let's get to the meat of this. I liked these headphones. They have a very neutral, balanced sound that opens up quite a bit as you turn the volume up. I would say you need to have these somewhere at least moderately loud to be able to enjoy the best of what these have to offer. At lower volumes, there's just too many details that don't come through - luckily for me, and most people, that shouldn't be a problem because when I like to listen to music, I want to hear it! With that in mind, these do have good bass, midrange and treble. Good, but not great. All lack a bit of detail and depth that give you that involved feeling or that excitement that a great track can bring to you. With that in mind, they do sound nice, and technically have an accurate sound, but they just didn't move me like some other sets of headphones in this same price range. However, there are features of this headphone that some of the people I let try out really loved, especially that it's super-lightweight. Seriously - these are some of the lightest over the ear headphones I've ever put on. You'll barely notice them, if your ears fit in them nicely. Also, the short cable length with the addition of the extension cable were very nice features that we all found to be a positive. Additionally, this is a nice looking set of headphones, even if their feel didn't match their looks as they did feel a bit flimsy and cheap due to their whole plastic construction.
For those interested in what these would work best for - here's my quick run down. Great for an office environment where you need to be able to hear people but you don't want their conversations to intrude on your listening. Also, those who are sensitive to wearing heavier headphones but still want that ear-encompassing experience, these will work. So, what types of music would I suggest for these? Here ya go
Good for genres:
- Classical
- Jazz
- Pop
- Country
- Big band
- Bluegrass
- Vocals
- Rock (if you're not craving crazy amounts of bass)
Probably avoid for these genres:
- Rap
- R&B
- Hip/Hop
- Dubstep
- Dance
Hopefully you'll see that I'm basically targeting those that love pounding bass. The bass in the HD 449's is accurate but it's not going to feel like subwoofers jumping in your ears. These don't take all that well to bass EQ'ing so you can boost it slightly, but anything more than a gradual bump will distort the bass and make the listening experience not all that enjoyable. That's not to say the bass isn't adequate for most listening experiences, as it is, but it's best for people that want to listen to things in their natural sound and not the boosted thump that most enjoy with the "avoid" genres above.
Overall I liked the 449's. They have their pros and cons which I'll list below.
Pros:
- Lightweight
- Neutral/accurate sound and tonality
- Balanced sound through volume (nothing overpowers the other frequencies)
- Extension cable
- Attractive design
- Can be driven to moderate levels with a portable media player
Cons:
- Cheap build feel
- Missing detail that would add excitement/involvement to the listening experience - makes them sound a bit flat
- Fairly hard to drive with a portable media player considering they're a 32 ohm headphone
- Narrow ear pads may make it difficult for some to wear around or over the ear
