CONGRATULATIONS!!! You are the first reviewer to address the hearing loss in the higher frequencies as people age! I would suggest that folks may want to get a hearing test to see if they have a deficiency in any particular hearing frequency range. Your suggestion to consider a reviewer's age is excellent!

these frequency response charts are a little weird imo. the hd 600 are supposed to roll of at 100 hz when in this chart they are only -3 at 30 hz. also the midbass bump is not that high. from what i can hear its something like +2db at around 250hz. when i use eq i do 40hz +3 and 30hz +5 and that sounds pretty neutral to me.

Sennheiser HD 600 is good for making music, as it is not very colored. If you have the money to spend, then Sennheiser HD 800 or Beyerdynamic T1 are even better as they are more neutral. Something like Grace Design m903, Mytek 192 DSD DAC, Benchmark DAC1 (or later versions) coupled with T 1 or HD 800 would be extremely high grade for this purpose.

I just don't like the look and the fact that I don't hear the sub-bass under 60Hz ... but ... work with the hd600 and then listen back on the speakers is very simply for my ears. When I work with my dt770 and then back to the speakers, it's no simply. The hd600 is like to little quality speakers in your ears. The sound is very neutral and I can hear the 10kHz if I use an exciter for the trebles ! I don't think you hear good after 10kHz with the hd650 .... people should stop looking at frequencies graphs of headphones as a exact measurement/guide of how they will sound/if you will like them, for starters 5 people can measure a headphone and get 5 different frequency curves with vast differences, second even if they were the same, its not going to tell you things like. how fast the driver is, how wide or narrow the soundstage the headphones is, how good the imaging within that soundstage is, will they require an amp. these things are all more important than a frequency curve, and even if you look at the frequency curve and think its exactly what you are looking for chances are it won't be due to reasons listed above. To elaborate you could without knowing it be searching for a headphone with an extremely wide soundstage and great imaging, pounding bass and sharp highs, see a frequency curve with lots of bass and highs and think they'll be perfect only to try them in store or when you get them home and find oh no the soundstage is quite narrow making the sharp highs sibilant and painful and the bass is powerful but the driver is slow and can't keep up with the changes in music. waa waa waaaaaaa.... final tip, listen to headphones yourself don't take anyone's advice on what to buy we all hear differently, what sounds good to one won't to another, and there is no one size fits all for headphones or sound.

Thanks, yeah, it's vital that we know some of these variables when reading reviews. Oh the never ending quest of dealing with tradeoffs, lol. You see my solution; buy both... tbh, I do prefer HD 650 now though, but both are still fantastic. Tyll @ Innerfidelity put HD 600 on his wall of fame but left out the 650's stating that 600 is better value due to their lower price. 650 came close though.

Frequency response charts can be found here: www.headphone.com/pages/build-a-graph And you can also look into specific models at: innerfidelity.com, use google and the site:innerfidelity.com operator to check out different models. Have you looked into the planar magnetic headphones from Audeze? They used to be a little shy in the treble and have a pretty narrow sound stage, but the newer models has something called fazor which changes that (just saying in case you read old reviews based on non fazor). Check out this video comparison by industry guru Tyll: kzitem.info/news/bejne/jp1muGV7k6WYrII Audeze is currently launching two new models which I've not heard, EL-8 open and closed backed. Tried AKG702 they were just huge things and wasnt that impressed with sound either. eddiebaby22 did you try Sennheiser Momentum? They just came out with a new version. They have less bass than ATH-M50x and are closed so not the same amount of leaks as the open cans. You could also try the new ATH-M70 which has less bass and better highs. Another idea is to look into Beyerdynamic DT770, but take note of their impedance, they have several versions and they all sound a bit different. If you don't want leaks you can't have open backed headphones such as Grado, HD600, 650 or similar.

Isn't the best way to check for neutrality is mix a tune using headphones, record to CD and then compare the CD to your recorded mix settings through your monitors? Then why does no one ever do this? They all just give opinions regarding neutrality, but never state what led them to come to that conclusion. That said, i'm not putting down this review. In fact, it's rather well constructed. I would just love to see some evidence of neutrality for once.

@Headphoneaddict
10 жыл бұрын
Well, you can use a pair of Sennheiser HD 600 out of an ipad or a notebook computer and it will sound very good, but probably not its best, as they have a very awkward variable impedance which is a little demanding on the amplifier. If you would like to look into amps and DACs I suggest you check out the Objective2 headphone amplifier with ODAC. It's cheap, it's great, it's fantastic. If you absolutely don't want an external device, then I would check out Philips Fidelio X1 which are more suitable for that kind of use, and also the closed back Audio-Technica ATH-M50x. None of these are as neutral as the HD 600's, as they have more meat in the lows, but it's a starting point. As for the Sennheiser HD 598, I think they're closer to HD650 than the 600s. The 598's also will work out of your ipad etc. But to repeat: HD 600 will also work out of your ipad but you wont be getting everything it has on offer.

A Legit review. This is what a review should reveal and contain it's entirety.Almost most of the reviews here in youtube community(say around 75%) does'nt contain the vital portion of sound they re-produce besides blah blah on bass,mid and high. But the reviewer took one step above by explaining the basics of FR graph,contents before actually putting the results on the table.simple but more informative. IMO HD600 is better as I can invest $100 savings on to a decent HP amp. Thanks and great job.

HD8 DJ vs. any of these? In particular the HD 600?
@Headphoneaddict
10 жыл бұрын
Hi, that really depends on what you're after and the application you're going to use them in. For instance, the HD8 DJ are closed back aka sealed headphones, which means they will isolate against sounds from the outside, whereas the HD600s are open back, so they don't isolate at all. Generally, open back headphones have better sound quality than their closed counterparts, but if you're going to use them in a noisy environment, you might be better off with closed cans as you will hear everything going on around you if you have the volume low. Also people around you will be hearing what you're listening to. If you give me a little more info on what you're after and planned use, it would be easier to give advice, but the above is a general rule of thumb.
@DanteJ
10 жыл бұрын
HeadphoneAddictCOM wow, thank you for the reply, honestly, didn't think anyone would help!. Right um, so my plan was, I've never had a serious pair of headphones, I've been using apple earphones for a while now, but have always known there existed better. After researching on the net, it's lead me to the HD 600 or HD8 DJ (LinusTechTips and others reviewed the HD8 DJ very highly). My intentions is to have a set of quality headphones to link to my new computer rig (that has a 600hm amp and "Cirrus Logic CS4398 DAC" on the motherboard - ASUS Maximus Formula VI) and use them for listening to all ranges of music, gaming and movies. Here's the thing, originally when I got this rig, I was looking for a "gaming headset" due to not having a dedicated sound solution, but, since I heard money is better invested into going away from gaming headsets and instead picking up audio headphones and a external mic, here's how I've gotten to here with these sennheisers. These will be used as a gaming headset, using perhaps a modmic attached, but I do want to underline the fact that I will definitely be using these headphones for a lot of music, movies and everything else (I think I'm answering my own question with my situation but I think I'm looking for your seal of approval and any alternatives hah). I will have to be quiet with these headphones too since I'm living with other people in a house, and don't want to wake them up with speakers. So I guess does it seem obvious to go with the HD8 DJ, since they are closed? I'm all about great sound quality, and want to make sure my first pair are worth it and are long lasting with my budget being under £300 (the HD8 DJ are £250, the HD 600 are £215). I do prefer the HD8 DJ looks and functionality wise, with the reinforced wire, portability and the low Ohm req. allowing perhaps on the go smartphone use. Would the HD8 DJ be suitable for a student who wants to stay quiet for other people, and wants to attach a mic and speak when gaming/skype etc to listen to high quality audio? Are they comfortable for prolonged sessions?Do the HD 600 leak too much sound to be used as a headset and be quiet for people upstairs/other rooms? Thanks in advance, appreciate your time and knowledge :)
@Headphoneaddict
10 жыл бұрын
Hi, you're welcome! :) Firstly, you're very clever to go for a good pair of headphones and an add on microphone. If you aim at using the headphones with portable players as well as your computer, I would get sealed headphones, because open ones are not really suitable for bringing around, especially in noisy places like LAN parties, bus rides, so on so forth. Also have to agree with you that the HD8 DJ's looks better than the HD600's. Secondly, when looking at headphones don't just look at the impedance rating but also the sensitivity rating. The higher the sensitivity, the less power is required to play loud. The lower the impedance, the more power the amp will be able to output. So with low impedance high sensitivity cans you can play LOUD with just about any devices. As for the HD 600's you will be able to drive them with your solution, and even portable players can make them sing, but not at very high volume levels. Thirdly, the most important part of a head-fi system are the headphones. In my opinion, the most important part of sound quality is: headphones >> amp > DAC. Also, I don't believe in esoteric cables. You could sink your whole budget into after market cables for the HD600's, which I find crazy. For me the stock cable has always been fine. Fourth, Linus is a very reasonable guy when it comes to audio, so I trust and agree with what he says 99 % of the time. Audio enthusiasts often go crazy you see, recommending you buy things that cost half a fortune to reach audio nirvana, hehe. My opinion is that you can get a very long way on a tight budget and with your motherboard I think you're already half way there. I agree with Linus when he says that the audio quality on newer mobos are far superior to the older ones. A few years ago you got hisses, hums and heard the mouse move around when using the onboard solution in many cases. For most motherboards nowadays that's not the case and is fortunately a thing of the past. Fift, the onboard amps in newer smartphones etc are improving vastly. Not an iphone guy myself, but I hear that the output on iPhone 5S is excellent. Sixth, sound leaks from open cans are not extreme, but people in the same quiet room will hear them, so if you had your computer in the same room as the tellie, people watching might have been annoyed during silent passages in what they were watching. If in another room, they won't be able to hear it, but if they are making noises, you'll hear it clearly. (You will hear a little bit through closed cans too, but not as much as with open ones). The best noise cancelling headphones are the Bose Quiet Comfort 15 (Bose QC15), but the audio quality is not up to par with similarly priced headphones, but that might be due to the fact that they have active noise cancellation, which means they're battery powered and cancel out ambient noise through an algorithm. Point seven, It's always difficult to help people know what is comfortable and what is not, since we all have different sized heads, how far out our ears stick out and how sensitive people are to weight on their heads, how sweaty they get and if pads feels hot etc. The best thing would be to head on over to amazon and pay attention to the *negative* reviews of the products you consider, as you will often find potential problems there. Point eight, I truly recommend the best selling *Audio-Technica ATH-M50x*, those are closed back, offer decent isolation, are cheap, have excellent audio quality, is well renowned for their audio quality at an extremely low price, looks cool, comes with three cables, have low enough impedance and high enough sensitivity to be driven by anything and well... It's just a very good starting point for someone new. They have a very full and rich sound to them, not bloated in the bass, but very clear sounding and not harsh in the highs, meaning they won't give you listening fatigue. They do however, have a tiny bit shallow cups, which might be touching your ears slightly, but not to the point where you go bananas, unless your ears sticks out a lot. I can wear them with my average sized head for hours on end without any problems. I urge you to read reviews on them and compare notes towards the HD8 DJ's and see what you find most interesting. If you end up getting ATH-M50x, HD600 or HD8 DJ and don't like them, a lot of the retailers have good return policies and then you know what you didn't like about the cans, and have a clear reference in what you like. Hope I answered all your questions and then some. I try not to give a specific yes/no answer, because at the end of the day audio is subjective and what I like might not be for you, but if you want a seal of approval, here it is: All these three cans are very good alternatives, but you have to make the final choice, hehehe.

HeadphoneAddictCOM Gosh, apologise, I do appreciate the open ended-ness of the answer haha, but its even more difficult now with the M50X into the equation. If you were to have a £300 budget, what would you personally go for? The HD8 DJs are double the price, with the M50X being £126 but reviews are great for both, but for me I'm unsure whether the HD8 DJs warrant the price, but i'm totally willing to pay for it if it is. The M50X seem like a great starter headphone, but its like, i'd rather pay more for a headphone that's for the experienced? if that makes sense? So that way I don't have to buy another pair of headphones. It's like I'd pay a lot now to have one solid pair instead of buying one and buying more later on. I do have larger than average ears with my head size being slightly too. I might be able to go test a M50X somewhere, but seemingly no one sells the HD8 DJ locally, so it will be difficult to test. I'll look into the online return policies.

I'm only 23 and I can only hear up to 17k in my right and 18k in my left. This chart doesn't go that high up. Nobody complains about not getting enough 18k, or at least nobody I'm aware of. So long as you can hear up to like 14k you'll be golden. Below that I'd expect the quality of the sound to deteriorate or to sound less crisp. But not from a lack of 20k lol.
@Surlias
9 жыл бұрын
It does go up to 20k. The frequency is displayed using a logarithmic scale, rather than linear, so as you progress along the frequency axis, the values grow very quickly. So that last space after the 10k tick mark jumps a full 10k to reach 20k by the end of the axis.
