Sir, a 60s vehicle with full synchromesh gearbox, inertia reel seatbelts, and brakes that are not too terrible. Overall, quite a handsome car that seems to be surprisingly easy to live with today.

The Triumph 1300 especially was a popular family car in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland with owners who appreciated its better quality and excellent design compared to a Ford Escort, Morris Minor or ADO16. It could be argued that the the Toyota Corolla and Datsun 1200 that started make their presence felt around this time took inspiration from Triumph. This is a beautiful car.

Still an elegant-looking car, and I actually knew someone who down on their income went from a Jag to one of these. Although if it had been say a Ford I doubt if their bean counters would have tolerated it flipping back and forth between FWD and RWD, but of course it was built with public money.

Yes, an interesting choice in re-engineering them so that they were "less complicated" between 1970, when the Toledo was launched, and 1973 when the 1500 TC came out. The re-engineering did indeed happen in the British Leyland years...

Hi Joseph, from the depths of winter in Christchurch New Zealand. Watching your post, of this most beautiful, of Triumphs 1300, brought back wonderful memories of my great Uncle Bob, who proudly owned a 1300 Triumph. He allowed me to drive his beauty around the Cheshire countryside in 1981, on a holiday from New Zealand. Watching your post, brought back such fond memories of that time, I so enjoyed reconnecting to my family at that time. Infact, Triumph cars became an obsession & now I am the proud owner of a 1977, Triumph 2000TC with power steering & overdrive. Thank you Joseph for your most enjoyable post.

Yes, I think the 2000s/2.5 PIs/2500s were quite successful in Australia from what I understand. Your Uncle Bob's car would have been quite old by 1981, but there were still plenty of these around by then, as evidenced by two different 1300s being used in two episodes of The Professionals, which were made in 1980. I really want to try a 2000, actually.

Yes, not so much in these front wheel drive 1300s, but in something like a Dolomite, with rear wheel drive, you could try putting in a Saab H engine. I think it has been done already.

I own one and my dad has owned classic 900's for the past few 20 years of my life. I have looked at doing this myself. While it would fit dimensionally, the engine is rotated 180 degrees, leading to a car with 1 forward and 5 reverse gears. with a custom diff and housing it would be possible, but that is way above my current skill and life

@@dap671ify Would it fit in the same way round as installed in a 99/900 I wonder ? Furthermore, I wonder if that Saab engine would fit in a Dolomite with a RWD set up. Would have to sort a sump out. Would be interesting to know if bolt patterns etc were kept common.

@@lloydvehicleconsultingin the Saab was The 1700 and later the 1850 version off the Dolomite. Saab enlarged it to a 2000cc. First the B later the H. Both very reliable engines. I had them both. Still have a B from 1973. So the 2000 B or H must be possible in a Dolomite. A lot off early Saab 99 had replaced the 1850 Because it is further developt and more reliable. 500.000km is defintively possible.
