@Vlodec Uh, no. In fact there is a qualitative difference in the way the country was run fifty years ago, forty years ago, even five years ago, compared to now. My point was specific and focussed on the executive seat of the USA, and to overgeneralize and exaggerate that is called, I'm sure you are aware, the fallacy of slippery slope. Learn something from people who have seen more, lived longer than you. And then in your turn you can pass on your experience and awareness to others -- I hope you are listened to better than you listen to others who may or may not agree with you, apparently you wouldn't even know.

An absolute treasure, this movie is. I had a friend tape it for me when in was telecast by HBO years ago. I still have it and LOVE it. Definitely rate it over the BBC version with Eric Porter or the David Niven movie from 1958, both of which are IMO quite good too, but this version is in a class by itself...

YES, I agree and I HOPE someone adds part two -it is even better, much better. I have the movie on vhs that I bought 30 years ago, with of course both parts one and two. I no longer have a vcr for the vhs tape, only a dvd player and I have not been able to find this movie on dvd. I met Julie Christie back in 2003 and I told her I loved her work in this small independent British film, for which she and Bates received television award acting performance nominations back 35 years ago. Tony award winner Irene Worth is great -Mrs. Raltenball-in part two she plays the mother of Julie Christie's part two character Sybil

This is only part one of a two part movie, only the first half. I have the VHS version, however presently sans a vcr vhs machine, only a dvd player and the movie is apparently not available on dvd. I HOPE someone could put part two on the you tube. The same actors, some playing the same character, ie Claire Bloom continues as MsCooper, Irene Worth is Mrs.Raltenbal and she plays the mother of Sybil(a shy spinster played by Julie Christie) and the late Alan Bates plays a disgraced older ex military guy. I give part one a 9 out of 10. However the part two, which appears to not be on you tube yet, I rate as a 10 out of 10. If you liked part one you will love part two. The actors Christie and Bates received television award nominations for their acting performances in this two part film, directed by the late great John Schlesinger

@@Baskerville22 His illegal sexual activities in cinemas are made clear enough! That he is a sex offender is absolutely central to the character's story, there's no ambiguity about it. He is disgraced in society, because of it. But because of the culture of the times, the screenplay did not condemn him for stalking random females, but instead presented him to the audience as a sympathetic character, to be empathised with, even pitied. A predatory sex offender would never be written in such a romantic way in a drama today, thank God.
