The phone dropped while I cut them off so I cut that part off. lol But when you take off all the soil, just cut as long as you can get between the mother and the pup. Sometimes they have roots and other times they haven't developed the roots. If they haven't developed the roots yet, it is okay because they will develop once you transfer it to new soil and give it time.

'Bromeliads need to be watered differently than other house plants. This is done via a central “tank” in the middle or the rosette. Rainwater is best, but you can also use tap water that has been boiled and cooled, or left to stand for 24hrs. You can empty the rosette every few weeks by turning it upside down and filling it with fresh water, doing this will prevent bacteria buildup. It is important to water the compost, but not too much. When watering the rosettes, add a houseplant fertilizer to the soil using only half the strength during spring and summer. Keep the compost moist in summer, they should be in a well-ventilated place and you can move them in shady spots outside during the warmest months. In winter, water the compost only after it has dried. Place the plants on trays with moist gravel or mist frequently. Bromeliads have an unusual property: their central rosette often dies after flowering. The plant will then produce many babies at its base. You can leave the baby plants in their original pot or they can be divided into other plants. It is best to wait for the bromeliads to reach at least 10-15cm before you divide them. To remove the baby plants from the main plant, lift it out of the pot, be careful not to damage the roots! Each baby plant should be rooted in peat-free houseplant compost. Then water the compost and the rosettes. Rooting can take around a month. Alternatively, wait until the main plant dies and then remove it. Then, let the babies grow from their roots. It may take several years for the new plants to bloom again.' This is the information I'm going to try on my Bromeliad. I didn't know you had to fill the central tank, and my first plant died 🙁

My pups do not have any roots, so do I have to cut the bottom like you did? Or just plant them directly?
@TheNoviceUrbanGardener

Hi I planted them directly into soil and they lasted a while. My issue is that I overrated them, and that's why they didn't last long. 🙁 Are yours still attached to the mother plant?

hi my bromeliad is in bad shape and the roots are rotting , I want to separate the baby plants but they're so small should I try repotting the whole plant ?
@TheNoviceUrbanGardener

Hi! It sounds like it may have root rot if that is the case remove the pups by cutting as close to the base of the plant as you can and repot in soft soil. You can also try to save the mother plant by cutting all the sludgy rotted parts and repotting in dry soil. The comment below me has a lot of helpful tips as well, some that I was not even aware of! 💙

bromeliad roots don't need water they are used for attaching to things in the wild, watering in the center of the plant and misting the leaves, you can cut the roots and even take them out of the soil

Oh thank you for that information. When I first got them years ago, I was doing research and was told not to completely wet the center and to be careful of it. Hopefully I can learn from these tips, thanks!

You cut out the most important part of the video😂 how do you separate the pup from the mother plant?

I know! 😭 The phone fell right when I did it. 🤦♀️ All you have to do is close as close to the bottom (where the Pup and Mother connect) as possible!

I am new to bromeliads & scouring the web for useful information. I've grown plants & gardened most of my life, but these escaped my attention until I bought a couple In 4" pots fr the Lowe's clearance shelves of sad or post-season sad plants at the back of the garden section. Re your pups, considering the mother plant was wilted & lacking water & the other plants on the table were also wilted & neglected, I am not surprised the pups didn't make it. You said you'd been so busy that your plants suffered from lack of attention. I wonder, did the soil have enough moisture at planting? Looks like you didn't put enough water on them to moisten very dry soil so water wouldn't just run through it, if that was the case. Perhaps preparing the soil in advance to ensure it has just the right level of moisture would be a good idea. I'm about ready to plant a couple myself, though smaller, pups, & I hope they don't go into shock & that they like the soil I plant them in🤞. I get sad when my plants die😢.

If you're gonna talk you really need to keep your voice up. I can't understand the mumbling parts.
