The Generals Redoubt, College Democrats, and College Republicans come together last week to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Two Washington and Lee alumni tragically lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks: Robert Schlegel ’85, who died in the Pentagon, and James Gadiel ’00, who died in the World Trade Center.
On Tuesday, Sept 10, 2024, students and community members placed 2,977 American flags, one for each victim of the attacks. They also placed international flags for every country that lost a citizen in the attacks.
On Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 5:30 p.m., student organizations and The Generals Redoubt hosted an annual memorial service, beginning with an interfaith prayer on Stemmons Plaza. Speakers included the campus director of The Generals Redoubt, the presidents of College Democrats and College Republicans, and Paul Youngman, the Associate Provost for Operations. W&L musicians accompanied the memorial.
Special thanks to Elijah Knorpp for taking excellent photos of the Sept 10th flag placing.
