Lost Metal can't get here soon enough! There are going to be so many Connections! And then the Year of Sanderson to follow? 2023 is going to be a good year, despite the lack of Stormlight 5. I will say that i don't expect it be on the same level as MB era 1, because when it comes down to it, Era 2 has been completely different. It wasn't as well planned out, always has felt a little slapped together on the fly. But he's doing something interesting, and I'm really just expecting a good set up for Era 3, with an appearance from theLord of Scars, leader of the Ghostbloods, Definitely-Not-a-Seon-in-a-Trenchcoat Kelsier.

Hooray for a quality reading month! I enjoyed the Lady Trent books too - and like you, think Marie Brennan did a good job in making us feel uncomfortable about Lady Trent's approach to the beliefs of other cultures, while still having her do her best not to disrespect them. I thought that was as gentle a reproof to colonizing mind-sets as I've ever seen.
@PonderingsOfPete

Thank you for finding the words I needed to say! I wasn’t sure how much I was gonna say regarding colonialism, especially since when I filmed this I was still processing Babel. They were such an interesting contrast that I’m still figuring out where I am on it. But you’re right! Lady Trent is very much “ooh I want to go here and figure things out, but I can’t disrespect the cultures,” but also there’s this underlying thought of “better me than someone else just destroying the place” And this is kinda set up from the first book with the captive dragons being shown as downtrodden and miserable.

Lost Metal is the first Cosmere we’ve gotten since RoW. I’m super super excited. Ken Liu stan for lyfe!!! I was reading Babel this month it’s such an interesting contrast to the Lady Trent books because on one hand you have a book that condemns England and you have one who has a main character that walks the line between imperialist tendencies and science, trying to respect the cultures she’s in while also acquiring the knowledge she wants

And now I'm even more excited to try Dandelion Dynasty. In September I read|finished: *Fantasy* LPQ 2: A Betrayal in Winter LPQ 3: An Autumn War - I've since finished the series. *chef's kiss* *Historical-Fantasy* The Folding Knife - KJ Parker - I think I've found a new favourite author. Basso in the best way felt like an Abercrombie character, like Glokta's Styrian cousin or something. *Horror* Dagon - HP Lovecraft Shadow Over Innsmouth - HP Lovecraft The Call of Cthulhu - HP Lovecraft - I liked Shadow Over Innsmouth the best of the three, but ultimately I was underwhelmed by all of them. *Sci-Fi: Classic* I binge read the rest of Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun with: Claw of the Conciliator Sword of the Lictor Citadel of the Autarch - Maybe it's recency bias, idc, but I'm calling it now, Top 3 Sci-Fi series for me. I Have No Mouth & I Must Scream - Harlon Ellison - Bloody deranged 🤣 *Sci-Fi: Modern* Redshirts - John Scalzi - Pretty fun Trek parody, but I'm more of a Doctor who fan
@PonderingsOfPete
Жыл бұрын
I will never not hype Dandelion. It's so freaking amazing. LPQ!!! what was your favorite moment? KJ Parker: not sure its actually historical fantasy because the countries are fake, but for sure, amazing character study in there. Picking up the Company soon, which excites me. Gene Wolfe: I gotta read that series at some point. A lot of people have recommended it to me. Possibly next year. Possibly John Scalzi: Doctor Who/Star Wars over Star Trek for me. Haven't really read anything written by Scalzi yet, though I have at least one of his books.

@@PonderingsOfPete I'm honestly struggling to find a favourite moment for LPQ, I loved it that much. Maybe with more time I'd have an answer. Yeah I go back and forth with using Historical-Fantasy to describe Parker, but for me it read more Historical than Fantasy even though as you say the countries are fake. I describe Guy Gavriel Kay as Historical-Fantasy though I think he fits that definition way better than Parker does. I recommend BotNS... its something lol I was having fun yet was confused a lot. Great wrap up! I got halfway through Paper Menagerie at some point and put it aside cuz they were too good and painful-I gotta pick it back up. Paper Menagerie is indeed painful to get through. Worth picking one of the short stories up every now and again though. I’m about halfway through Fool’s Errand and that novella adds a good bit of context that is quite useful. As to Going Postal: do it!! I think I’m definitely becoming a believer that there’s a place in Discworld for everyone to enjoy (unless you have no sense of humor. That might be a tricky one, but I’m sure there’s one for that person out there too. Science of Discworld, maybe?) So hype for Lost Metal. Are you reading the preview chapters?

@@PonderingsOfPete that’s a good idea with the short stories, trying to plow through the whole thing like a novel was probably my mistake. I’ve been holding off on the preview chapters in a spate of never-before-seen discipline so I can do the whole thing on release.
