1955, had a heart attack, already, heard that Eisenhower had several of them , like around 6 or 7 of them, LBJ seemed more aged I think because of that. My wife had an Aorta tear in 2009, she survived with great quick medical attention ( thank you very much Medicare!) Everything was FULLY paid for, EVERYTHING. Not 80/20,at least then, she was 68, now she is 80, and doing pretty good, very few people survive biorforcation ( tear) of the Aorta. She also had excellent home care follow up, she was an RN for nearly 50 years, worked in many different medical settings, including a pych ward.

Cronkite really didn't have a Midwest accent; I think you're assigning this to him because you know his background. Cronkite and all those CBS correspondents all spoke something that really doesn't exist in the geography of The United States; they all spoke "Standard American English" or "Broadcast English." If you look at the variety of places these men came from it's pretty amazing how they all spoke this way, even away from the camera. One notable exception was Howard K. Smith.

His closest friends described him as someone who would sell his own mamma for political gain. Getting "Johnsoned" was a known tactic in the House and Senate, where he would corner Congressmen, especially in the men's room, until they agreed to vote in his favor. These sessions could last over an hour, where he would use cue cards in his pocket while towering over the victim (he was 6'4"), running through the full range of emotions from laughing to crying, until the target succumbed and agreed to Johnson's will.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and partial and inaccurate history is convenient sometimes to make ones case. I don't think some people have an understanding of politics, international relations and the decisions that a president has to make, and the limitations placed on those decisions, both political and with the military advisors. Does anyone honestly think that in the same political climate(the height of the Cold War, post Cuban Missile Crisis, post Cuba, post Berlin Wall, the country still reeling from the McCarthy era, that any other person in that position would have implemented a different policy that would have turned out better for anyone? The right wing wanted to use nukes, for christ sakes. And it is now confirmed that Nixon and company sabotaged the Paris peace talks going into the 68 election, dragging the war on longer and deeper(Cambodia and Laos anyone?) War sucks, imperialism sucks. And once the war beast is let out of the bag, terrible, horrifying things can and will happen. Listen to the tapes, get a sense of the times and the decision making process based upon the intel that they had. I, too, can come up with a Utopian conclusion(get out, the sooner the better) for this war, but unfortunately, it didn't happen. The South still would have fallen, just a lot faster.

JFK was pulling the first 1000 troops out of Vietnam in December of 1963 and was going to have the majority of them out by 1965.. Look up "National Security Action Memorandum 263". LBJ reversed this very soon after becoming President, and began sending MORE troops to Vietnam. I'm not sure any other president around this era, other than Carter (if he had been President then), would have pulled troops out of Vietnam.....LBJ may have had the political capital to do so, since JFK was killed and the nation was mourning, but he didn't do it. LBJ's Great Society withered and died in the jungle and rice paddies of Vietnam. LBJ could have been one of our greatest President had he let Vietnam go, and focused on the domestic agenda. The 60's were ripe for great societal and economic change.....but too much political capital was wasted on Vietnam. Since JFK was assassinated, we will never truly know what would have happened. I agree with much of what you mentioned though.
