I’m up in Florida’s Great Northwest aka, The Western Gate to the Sunshine State aka, LA, aka, Lower Alabama, otherwise known as Pensacola, not too far from the beach. Depending on which Ag Zone you look at, I’m in Zone 9A or 9B. Escambia County is so big, that up in the north end of the county, they are in Zone 8, a full Ag Zone less than me down in the south end of the county. I have some peppers that I started about a month ago. I plan to try to over-winter them. I’ve never done that, so we’ll see. Right now, my garden is full of okra and cowpeas. I decided a couple of years ago, to quit fighting the heat and humidity, by trying to keep my tomatoes and cucumbers going through July when the temps were hitting 98 - 100. Now I just pull them all and plant okra and cowpeas, and wait for cooler temps. It’s still pretty hot here at the end of August with temps in the low 90s, but I’ve got brassicas and onions started. The seed trays have to be kept in the shade or the heat will cook them. Fall is my favorite time to garden. I’m looking forward to getting my lettuce and peas going in a couple of weeks. Still a little too hot for them right now.

I tracked down a package of 4th of July tomato seeds (Home Depot) because you always speak so highly of them. They were the first tomato seed variety to germinate, and they look great as seedlings. I need to get them in the ground soon! I have pre-ordered my bare root strawberries. Locally, in Lake County Central Florida, Brilliance is the recommended variety. I have a ton of cover crops that will need to be dealt with before I can get my garden set up for Fall. I really enjoy your videos and appreciate the effort to release September before September so we can be on time and not behind.

I discovered Belstar broccoli a couple of years ago and they’re now my favorite for inland NE FL. Black Krim tomatoes are my go-to tomato. Our shishito and baby honey bell peppers are coming back after the hottest part of summer is passing. Jalapeños are still going strong. Love butter crunch lettuce here. Going to check out your planner. 😊

Anyone considering the Wild Floridian Garden Planner for 2025 - I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you get it. I’ve grown vegetables in NE FL Jacksonville for 8 years. Received this planner for the first time for Christmas 2023, and IT IS A GAME CHANGER. I cannot recommend the planner enough. Personally I prefer the print version, but I’m sure both will be fantastic in 2025. Oh, and did I mention it’s a GAME CHANGER😂. I’ve had the best understanding of when to plant what since receiving this planner. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ to Wild Floridian and this practical, useful, and informative planner ❤

wild strawberries like the native fragaria virginiana and alpine varieties grow really well in our heat and sandy soils. can also tolerate lots of shade! small, but pack lots of unique flavor. perfect for small containers or hanging baskets. they’re mainly grown from seeds which can be more affordable for people not wanting to pay bare root prices. Re: strawberries. I live in PR and am planning a trip to S. FL. mid to end of September (hurricanes permitting on both ends). I am hoping to find some locally grown ones, harvest the seeds (eating the rest - haha), and planting those immediately upon my return to PR. I figure that any that fruit there at that time also has a decent chance of growing here. :)

I have Turks cap all over my yard. In the shady areas it takes care of itself. They are also lining the street on my property. I grew up across the street and they have been there all my life. I honestly don't know if anyone planted them in the last over 100 years. I do know my whole area was cow pasture before my house and the one I grew up in was built 123 and 126 year ago and they were the first 2. I have pictures but black and white are hard to tell. Turks cap need no help. They still bloom in the dead heat no watering and soil is bone dry. Too much water doesn't phase them. They just want to flower. I feed the flowers to my hens. We used to suck the sugar out of the flower as kids. I have started rooting cuttings to share with my neighbors.

I do integrated gardening. I grow food for me and food for wildlife. I put a lot of effort into adding native plants that create a balanced ecosystem and year round food for my wildlife. This keeps birds, snakes, wasps, ladybugs, etc in the garden year round. They eat the bugs that try to take out my veggies.

@@WildFloridian thank you so much! I would love to learn more about growing seedlings to transplant also. Seedlings grown on a covered porch and when to start them so i would have my own starts to ouplant at the correct time . Does that make sense?
