I have read a couple things by Ottessa Moshfegh that I've been this way-that way about, and I kind of enjoy some of her crusty characters... well, not exactly the characters, but their crusty attitudes and behaviors and choices. Sort of like living vicariously through people that you don't exactly want to be them (because they are pretty nasty) but because there is something admirable and liberating about being so unabashedly nasty? At any rate, I don't know why I put so much thought into writing it, because she's not one of my favorites, either. But I really loved how you could articulate why she's not your cuppa tea, like how you want to read for enjoyment so having to work at these "next level" books isn't something that's worth it for you. I appreciate that! And I really loved The Unmothers, it was such a weird idea overall, and I loved the main character. AND I am so excited that you might be entering your folk horror era! (It's the perfect time of year for it!) I enjoyed the Sarah Pinsker book, it was fun! Which is not what I was expecting; I've read some of her other stuff, and it was a bit...heavy? But also some really cool concepts? If you want to read more by her and you're okay with some short stories, you may want to read Sooner Or Later Everything Falls Into The Sea. One of the stories in that book was one of the wildest ideas that I am so jealous of not coming up with first (even though I don't write fiction, ha!)

It took me a little while to get into The Unmothers, but I ended up enjoying it and gave it four stars. I appreciated the ending and the feminist commentary.

i love the phrase this is the next tax bracket of literary that i'm interested in residing in. i also recently reread bunny, and it's just so weird and i love it. i think this book is what started me loving just the absolutely unhinged books i've been reading lately.

Bunny was also a 5⭐ for me on the first read and re-read. On the second read I annotated and discovered some deeper elements I had initially missed. I think I may do a re-read annually.. I feel I will get more out of it each time. Truly amazing that a book can do that. Mona, my dear, you are an undeniable genius!

I love seeing a fellow autistic bookish fan, I'm also self diagnosed so far. I've really enjoyed previous Matt Haig books, so I can't wait even more to read this one! And the fact he's autistic makes sense in terms of his commenting human behavior and, unfortunately, in terms of sometimes feeling nothing makes sense in this life.

I love to hear that! I want to get an assessment but it’s so expensive and the diagnosis isn’t covered by insurance. I haven’t found anything for less than a grand and I can’t rationalize it. One day… 😌

@@ReadingWryly I'm actually having my first visit at the end of the month, but ADHD and the potential meds is why. I have a lot of traits of both ADHD and autism. I've kind of accepted the autism part a long time ago and I'm already reading about it and understanding more, and that's honestly as much as you can do anyway. And if it helps, it doesn't truly matter if it's autism according to a professional or not, the quality of life improving is key.

for Folk Horror, I really liked Lost in the Garden by Adam S. Leslie. Perfect read for when it's hot, if you're a seasonal reader. Kinda trippy.. weird people.. mysterious something happening... 😊
