I apparently missed this video when you uploaded it so sorry for the late, probably no longer relevant response. 😳 It sounds like a lot of the things you enjoyed about Serpent & Dove are also in Ruined by Amy Tintera. I was just looking on Goodreads and I don't see a review from you on that one (sorry if I missed it) but I think you would really enjoy it for similar reasons. It's about a girl named Em who is Ruined, which is what they call people from Ruina who have various powers. The current king declared war on the Ruined so they're all but extinct, and Em is one of two Ruined princess left alive to inherit the desolate queendom of Ruina. Em infiltrates a caravan transporting a princess from another nation to marry the prince of this all-powerful nation, marries the son of her sworn enemy, and has to figure out how to dismantle the system from the inside. It has loads of political intrigue, a steamy hate-to-love romance, some badass powers, and [*warning*] a lot of gore. I binged the whole trilogy this year (they're available for cheap on kindle) and I was obsessed.

OMG!! I had the exact same thoughts about Sorcery of Thorns... and I just realized that! When I finished reading it, I just felt that something was off or missing? And that of course was the "weak" villain and the "weird" pacing! The villain was an interesting villain in the first half, but later in the plot... it felt kind of childish. I still quite liked the book though, the writing was beautiful, and the characters of Silas, Elisabeth and Nathaniel were interesting and fun! And the world too, I wish the world could be further explored in a sequel, but sadly it is a standalone :( Going to read Serpent and Dove now, I really hope my expectations don't crush the book...!

Kinda off Fantasy for a while, but Serpent & Dove caught my attention. Will pick it up next. Of late, I have see quite a books leveraging on French language and draw from French culture and use the extractions to rivet the fantastical worlds, which they build in the books, to the ground of believable. Does it work all the time? Can't say. It annoyed me so much in GILDED WOLVES (by Roshani Chokshi) that I abandoned the book after dragging it to about 23%. The same idea, though, worked like a charm in SKY WITHOUT STARS by Joanne Rendell and Jessica Brody, which is one of the best I have read this year.

I was half-way through but I'm glad I didn't force myself to finish it, I just couldn't deal with the "romance" and I wasn't that interested in the story or the characters. @@froncifresh A Curse So Dark and Lonely is a recent one I very much enjoyed, a book that is kind of universally appealing. I was very disappointed by Serpent & Dove, the romance is forced and all the characters are somehow tied to one another in an almost soap-opera-ish way. It's simplistic and very much a debut novel. I might have liked it more without the hype.
