Although my first trip of 2021 was a very short one, it was much needed to break the lack of adventure caused by the Covid-19 restrictions. I thought that neighboring Serbia was a good place to break the ice after a 19-month layoff from overseas travel. I picked Nis because it seemed like a unique city, and only a 4-hour drive away from my hometown, Sofia.
I chose to take the bus, as I heard that there are long cues at the border due to the summer season. It seemed I made the right decision, because our bus got through within a matter of minutes while cars waited in their designated cues. The trip to Nis was pleasant, and the road was in excellent condition without a single pothole in sight.
Nis is not popular among tourists, but has rich history that dates back to the Ottoman rule as well as both world wars.
My first stop was at Skull Tower. Built in 1809 by the Ottoman following the battle of Chegar.
Stambol Gate is the entry point of the Nis Fortress. General access is free of charge and inside you can find a park-like atmosphere, old buildings, small museums and street art, expressing the city's love for Jazz.
Next I visited The Red Cross concentration camp, this was my first visit at a Nazi concentration camp.
If museums are not your thing, a stroll through the buzzing city center is a perfect way to enjoy a day in Nis. Sit down for a coffee like the locals do, or treat your taste buds to a delicious 'pljeskavica' from one of the many street food stands throughout the city.
To end my short trip, I visited Bubanj memorial park, a memorial portryaing three giant fists in memory of 10 000 citizens of Nis who lost their lives during World War 2.
