Its fermented cabbage, its only cabbage, salt, water and time. Cooked with smoked bacon and meat. It melts in your mouth, the sourness of the cabbage gives it a specific taste, similar to sarma. That is one of my favorite dishes. You can wash out some of the sourness out of the cabbage with water before preparing the dish. I like it more sour. We also have pickled cabbage its called turšija, mix of pickled cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, peppers, green tomatoes. Also we have fresh cabbage with oil and vinegar, it is usually served with roasted pig (pečenje) and grilled meat (pljeskavica, ćevapi...). Serbs actually eat a lot of cabbage.

This was one of the biggest surprises with those "Trumpeters" at Gucha Festival parading down the main street during the competition. Growing up in Serbian province of Voyvodians I've seen'en and heard'em on various media, however, seeing them in person is 1,000 X better - and I'm not exaggerating. In those days I was into Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Doors, Rolling Stones, Uriah Heep, etc etc - but those "Trumpeters" blew me away I swear to God! Have you seen the size of those people! @11:55 - Fun fact: Back in Titio's communist Yugoslavia, you'd be arrested for singing, playing or even listening to this song (Jeremija/Jeremiah), as it mentions Serbian kingdom's army feats and song says "I am I, Jeremija, my last name is Krstic", where Krstic is Serbian common last name with cross in it (literally Cross-ich, of cross). Too Serbian and religious for those times, you'd be a hard core nationalist playing or enjoying that song, but somehow everyone knew it :) Ty for another great video from Serbia, and I hope you'll have more fun in a place not preoccupied by world's problems that much.

When they came to Serbia we take them to eat sarma and svadbarski kupus ( wedding cabbage ) and they honestly ask us are we stole those dishes from them, cause it reminded them on Saam and kimchi cabbage. We didn’t know what they are talking about, cause in those days we didn’t know much about Korean culture, customs or cuisine, but it was interesting to us to hear that there is something similar in another part of world. BTW wedding cabbage is recipe to not over drink with Rakia, cause if alcohol start kicking too hard while partying, take a stop, eat some cabbage and meat and soon you are ready to party more 😉

I think it’s actually the biggest Balkan Roma festival with some other traditional Serb music. But, to be fair gypsy music is fully integrated into Serbian culture and tradition. While the gypsy music in Spain has its origins in Arabic music, the Serbian and Romanian sounds like it hails from Asia and Eastern Europe. It’s different.
