This is not the first time Serena has started drama during a game. I seem to recall Williams was on the other end of an apology after a controversial match with Jennifer Capriati in 2004. Not to mention that she threatened to kill the Asian judge line woman in a 2009 semifinal match game against Kim Clijsters. And in 2011, Williams suffered a U.S. Open final meltdown in a loss to Samantha Stosur. Not only did she disrespect Umpire Ramos, but she also spoiled the whole game for the audience and especially poor Naomi Osaka, who obtained the rightful victory. If anything, Serena should be fired from playing tennis because her ugly behavior isn’t worth spoiling the whole audience who paid a ton of money to attend a game like that.

Clearly the most talented player in women's tennis, but clearly not a role model for children or future tennis players. She has a long history of temper tantrums at the US Open because the NYC fans applaud and support this behavior. Ironically, her coach admitted to giving Serena hand signals as she was telling umpire Ramos that he was just giving her a thumbs-up. After the match, no journalist had the courage to ask her about this contradiction. Half her supporters in the stands have never played tennis and don't have a clue what tennis etiquette is. She doesn't act like this at the French, Wimbledon or Australian Opens because they don't tolerate this BS. She stole Naomi Osaka's victory celebration that day. She did the same in her US Open matches with Kim Clijsters and Sam Stosur in the past. Then she wonders why Federer and Nadal get more respect from tennis fans. She doesn't complete a tournament without smashing at least one racquet on the ground.

The big difference though, is that they don't have the money Serena has, most of which was gained with class and honesty on the court. So much do I despise his loony toon, disrespectful, and maniacal antics. (And before another Ausie calls me unpatriotic. Save it. It's just truthful disrespect where it is due ). But with Serena, check the only court where these disruptive tantrums occurred. AO? RG? Wimbledon? No, they were at the USO. And the most notable, were against Kim Clijsters, Samantha Stosur, and Naomi Osaka. And in all three matches, Serena was losing, and went on to lose anyway. She worked the Flushing Meadows crowd into a frenzied mob against Osaka. So much so, that Naomi cried and apologised to the crowd for winning! And Serena had to ask the crowd to stop booing! Then she had the nerve to tell Osaka that the tyrade had nothing to do with her. Really? Then why carry on like an electrified chicken, about the treatment of female tennis players, and calling the umpire a liar and a cheat, in the middle of their match?! Could Naomi do anything about that? No. With Serena's clout, she should have taken it up where it may have had an effect, with the WTA. She lost a lot of fans, including me, when she displayed such behaviour, against women who weren't there to be disrespected by her, but to do what they were doing, winning their matches. Haters? Clearly you didn't understand what happened. Tsitsipas was getting coaching from the stands from his father and coach in his native Greek language. Medvedev was outraged because the umpire was not penalizing him for this clear and obvious violation. After that exchange between the umpire and Medvedev, the tournament referee asked a Greek umpire to stand by the court to hear what was being said by Tsitsipas's father. Once that information was translated as coaching, Tsitsipas was fined by the ATP. No sexism or strength of an umpire at issue. The umpire did not know what was being said in Greek. Once understood by the umpire, action was taken. Medvedev was within his rights to demand action.

If I am not wrong, coaching was disallowed at a time when not all players could afford to bring their coaches along on tour and therefore could give some players an unfair advantage. I can see why rule might need changing at least in the grand slams where I think all participants do have their coaches. The problem I have is how distracting they can be, especially between first and second serves. And part of me absolutely loves the one-on-one aspect in long matches where players are forced re-evaluate, re-strategize and motivate themselves and you can see the mental fortitude or lack there of in players. But this still keeps happening and will continue to happen. I would suggest that they either allow coaching and be done with it or place the coaches farther away from the players so they couldn't communicate with the players at all, at least not verbally.
