Damn you jam pretty freaking good. The gap for the cable should be between the lever and the mount. At least that's the way I've always done it. Stick with it . Eventually it'll workout. Good luck. I know on the newer bikes having trouble finding neutral is a symptom of a messed up compensator. Don't know about the BDL setup

I know this shit can get to you but don’t get discouraged. You’ll get her dialed in. I just bought my second shovelhead in 5 months. I’m a glutton for punishment I guess. The one I just got last week has been setting for several years. New battery and fresh gas and fluids and she fired right off but when I put it in gear and try to pull off the clutch squeals and raises hell. I’m hoping the plates are dry from setting up so long but I guess I’ll find out. Good luck with everything bud you take care and ride safe. Man that guitar riff in the beginning of the video was bad ass. A man of many talents.

Hello Ed. I've been riding, racing, and building motorcycles since 1963. Worked on them for a living for many years. The problem you're having is a fairly common one, especially with those early style clutches. The issue is gonna be in one of two places. Possibly a combination of the two. 1) You're not getting enough travel in the pushrod that goes through the transmission main shaft. It was hard to tell from the video, but it didn't look to me like the adjuster and lock nut on the primary side of the pushrod was moving far enough. You may wanna try a 16th of an inch of clearance at the lever instead of an 8th. May or may not help. 2) Your clutch plates are sticking. If you soaked them in transmission fluid before you installed them, as some folks recommend, get a couple cans of brake cleaner and clean them off really good. Let them dry completely and put them back in. After addressing those two issues, put a few hundred miles of stop and go riding on those new clutch plates. And be aggressive with your take offs. Sometimes that will cure the problem.

Thanks. I originally had a primary chain then I switched to belt. I had put brand new wet/dry friction disks in, and I did soak them in oil prior to installing them with the chain. When I switched to belt primary I sprayed them with brake cleaner. Do you think I should just strictly use dry friction disks or stick with these and try to clean them again. Thanks

@@edZILLA64 I would definitely take the clutch apart and clean those plates again. Clean the steel plates too, not just the fiber plates. While you have it apart, make sure all of the fiber plates are sliding in and out freely on the 10 clutch hub studs, also. When it goes back together, make sure the 3 nuts that set the tension on the clutch springs are evenly adjusted. If they're not, then the pressure plate will be uneven, and won't allow the clutch plates to release fully.

Hey Ed, I have the same issue with my shovel, ive just wrote it off as the nature of the beast! Most anyone Ive talked to say its pretty common. I just wait til I shut it off to put it in neutral ( like when I'm rolling it around in the basement for instance) You adjusted everything the same way I do, I would clean the plates one more time and put some miles on her! That’s a great riff Big Ed! You’re going to have to incorporate more jams into these vids. I HATE to beat a dead horse but I would clean those clutch plates.. I had the same experience, first the bike started to creep then after the clutch plates really got oil soaked they would not disengage at all. I was running so called wet/dry plates as well. Brake cleaned them and sealed the clutch cover with soft gasket sealer and my problem is gone! Hey, what the heck is all that racket going on when you first pulled in the clutch when it was running?? That’s maddening my friend!

the 1/8th inch is a Nickel thick , sounds good the timing is spot on . Rev it up a little more go to 4000 as it comes back down to 1200 try it , the spinning of the gears will let it slide into the dogs . You did everything fine for a clutch adjustment it has to find the sweet spot the 1/4 turn could be 1/2 a turn or 1/3 turn . as long as your not dragging and the bike is creeping at a stop . the old guys would hit Neutral on a roll then kill the bike to back up to a curb they had drag on the old Shovel and Pan heads, it want to go forward with the clutch pulled in .

I've tried alot of stuff. I've done alot of different turns. Last night I turned out the three nuts for the spring cover as far as I could, and that helped a little. I was able to find neutral a few times. I'm going to pull the friction disks out again and clean them again.

@@edZILLA64 The Old Guys set it where it pull a few inch then stop then pull a few inch's then stop they could hold it at a red light it just creep forward a few feet at a 2 minute red light . They could hit N with it doing that at long lights shift and go on green. if it pulls a little it might be the trick as long as its not creeping to fast getting away from you .

Ed, where is that rubbing/squealing noise coming from when you first pull in the clutch... On video it sounds nasty.. It might be that you are running dry clutches and I am not used to hearing that sound. NICE JOB on the guitar playing, man of many talents. Otherwise, you did all the steps that I know of for adjusting the clutch. I honestly am not sure what to suggest.. Let me ask this, with the bike turned off, can you shift the transmission through all the gears and nothing gets stuck? To me it seems like the transmission works fine when the bike is not running. Now a question to the folks that know more about transmission than I, if he can shift through the gears while the bike is off, would that be a good indication the shifter pawls are ok? I mean if the pawls were misaligned wouldn't the shifting be bad regardless if the bike was running or not?
@edZILLA64
3 ай бұрын
That noise does sound nasty, but I was told that is how alot of belt drives sound. My first belt drive. When the bike is of i can swith to nuetral easy some of the other gears seem ok on shifting if i reach down with my hand , but with my foot it is harder.
@enemyilaf
3 ай бұрын
@@edZILLA64 That noise would drive me crazy, LOL! Okay on the shifting when off... hopefully this is a good indication that the transmission is okay... I hope someone confirms this, just to avoid taking it a part. NOW this is what I would try next, not saying it will help, but I would take the primary cover off and loosen then belt to maybe an 1" play... to see if it helps... if not I would go the other way and get about 5/8" play (online that is the number I seen for bdl belts, no idea if belt width matters in the play amount) Again I am not saying this as fixing anything, more what I would try to see if I could eliminate the belt tension as an issue. If I remember correctly you replaced the bearings in the inner primary housing,.. I know you replaced the clutch hub bearings with the long pins... so ideally all of that should be good.. WOW! I hate to even say this, since it seems too stupid, but I would reach under and check the transmission mounting bolts, to make sure they are tight. I am just trying to think what all could be causing the transmission to act differently when the clutch is engaged vs not running... (everything except opening the transmission) Well another question, when you had the chain primary on, did you have the same shifting issues?
@enemyilaf
3 ай бұрын
oh, online it said 1/2" to 5/8" play... and you are at 3/4, so that sure would be close enough.. haha!! 1/4" of slop in adjustment, that is not very accurate at all.

@@edZILLA64 if you have the adjustment for the pushrod meaning meaning separation and lever and movement.. now I do mine 3/4 of a turn back.. from seated when you do the adjustment with the adjusting screw.. that's only because I like the placement of the liver.. and even though I have the shovelhead and the Evo both of that same spot.. when I get a one bike and then I get on the other bike it is different..... I just think the discs are sticking.. if you have any other discs or wash them and soap and water real well I don't know if you're running oil in their I've always run oil.. in the primary.. only one time did I ever have a belt drive and I broke the belt and that was 1984.... I think that's when they first came out or were popular.. so I went back to a chain a chain is pretty dog gone strong.. but yeah standing still I've never had a bike go in the neutral.. let's just one of those fancy Japanese bikes.... And I haven't had one of those since I had a 750 Honda probably 1986.. highway shift into neutral by the last four or five feet.. before I stop.. and sometimes it wants to play another times it don't want to play...
