Five superb and very rare live recordings by Pierre Alain Volondat of Lyapunov’s Transcendental Etudes.
No. 1
the first etude is a very beautiful etude and this is the most melodic recording of the etudes by Volondat. It is delicate, subtle, and a relaxing piece and this recording has very impresseive voicing espcially the countermelody in the beginning. 3:27 there is a change in the audio as a few notes get skipped. This is because in the original video on youtube there was a voice at this exact timestamp that said “erek” and I wanted to remove the annoyance. The ending is great plus the subtle but beautifully profound very bass notes. C sharp and b. Very glad all the etudes are not played messily. RECORDING: • lyapunov transcendenta...
No2 a wacky sounding etude but with a pleasant melody. This piece looks extremely and sounds extremely difficult to play and also with the non-syncronous hands. The climax with a cadenza starting at 5:48 is Lisztian and grandeur, and the attractive beginning. The ending is amazingly written too and played. The extra high notes by Volondat and the atonal-like chord by Lyapunov is such a wonderful addition. • Lyapunov etude nr 2 P...
No 4:
A very heroic sounding etude and a meaningful melody with superbly innovative uses of both left and right hands. This is a monstrous, super messy, and chaotic recording along with the 6th etude but an incredble experience to listen. He gives no mercy to the piano and the bass sounds so immersive + resonates. • Lyapunov etude nr 4 Pi...
No. 6 An out of the world recording and my jaw dropped listening to this first time. The 6th etude is my 2nd favourite etude after the 10th, and is my first of his recording I came across. It is incredible that many of Volondat’s other recordings sound completely different than this sound. The nickname storm definitely reflects this recording as it is just increidble. Whilst it is so so messy, and i definitely cannot ear all the notes, the accuracy is not bad, and I can imagine it would have been a life changing experience to see this rare life performance at the time. The appasionato section at 10:38 is undountably amazingly played. I am honestly eternally grateful this recording exists and this itself is 10x more exciting than modern performances. I also wonder how he makes the piano sound like that. The uploader Thomas Van Ginneken is definitely right that he resembles Nyiregyhazi. • Lyapunov etude nr 6 Pi... 0
The 11th etude is a clear indication that Lyapunov was influenced by Liszt adn these were dedicated to him. He has 12 etudes, all in the same type of key, sharps, and have the same series name like Liszt. This etude beginning significantly resembles Fuex Follets and simarlarly is possibly the most difficult of the set and the epitome of complete supervirtuosity. This recording is insane; the accuracy and clarity is astounding, which was a very pleasant surprise. The ending is just…perfect. • lyapunov etude nr 11 (...
Full thanks to Thomas Van Ginneken for supplying the internet with these rare unforgettable recordings and full credits to him as he owns all of the audio. Sheet music from IMSLP.
