Hora staccato (1906) is a virtuoso violin showpiece by Grigoraș Dinicu. It is a short, fast work in a Romanian hora style, and has become a favorite encore of violinists, especially in the 1932 arrangement by Jascha Heifetz. Dinicu wrote it for his graduation in 1906 from the Bucharest Conservatory, and performed it at the ceremony. Subsequently it has been arranged for other combinations of instruments, notably trumpet and piano.

Quite a few wonderful trumpeters have taken this on, including Harry James, Timofei Dokshitzer, Matthias Höfs, and many others. There is no need to cry, but every reason to start practicing, if you wish to play this at a performance level. I readily admit, I cannot play it. I am too busy with other responsibilities. However, I enjoy listening to those who can. Sergei most assuredly falls into the “can” camp! Now, one thing bothers me... Why would anyone have pushed the thumbs down button? This is utterly exemplary playing. Sure - Maestro Höfs performs it differently and some may prefer that. The same souls be true for the big, lusty sound of Harry James. However...thumbs down? I don’t think so!

Obviously Sergei is a formidable player, and he demonstrates just a little of his wonderful technical abilities here, but its ruined by his insistence on rushing through- perhaps he was unhappy with the orchestra's tempo but he rushes all the semiquaver passages and the performance suffers as a result.

LOL just today I was telling my wife about how I took Conservatory method trumpet instruction at a private academy in San Francisco whilst in the military in the late 80s and it was mandated by my instructor that I purchase Arban's Conservatory Method "Bible". I never forgot that book and how expensive it was back in 1989, but it was invaluable for its content.
