I've probably mentioned elsewhere my recollection of a time when Soviet-era movies used to be aired on British television, probably late 1960s into the mid-1970s. I know I was young at the time, late teens into twenties, but I LOVED what I saw, this movie being shown in two parts due to its length. Visually it knocked me out and the music, with its edgy, stylised dramatic quality, was something else. The late Christopher Palmer's realisation is magnificent while the Chandos recording is exemplary.

Morning Max (I trust you are enjoying your time away.) The two parts are often shown separately as they were filmed and released that way. It was to have been a trilogy, with Part I released in 1944 but the similarities between Stalin and Ivan's despotism led to Part II's release being delayed till 1958 and Part III being abandoned.

Rodders, Thanks for that info. I can't speak for NZ, but it seemed as if there was a cultural shift in British TV after the mid-70s. It was seemingly acceptable to show Soviet stuff, especially Eisenstein, up to then. I also remember a remarkable Kurosawa film shot in Central Asia, "Derzu Uzala" (?) with Soviet cast. But then, nothing, apart from perhaps occasional things like "Solaris". Whether this was due to deep-seated, ideological anti-communism, even post-Stalin and nascent Perestroika/Glasnost, or part of the general "dumbing-down" in televisual entertainment, I don't know. Obviously, art-house cinema still shows the stuff but the audience is therefore "specialised".

Max, I first saw the two Ivan films on NZ TV in the 1980's, when they used to show foreign cinema late on a Saturday night (when almost no one would be watching.) I have to admit I was only tuning in then to hear Prokofiev's music. The sound quality seemed very poor but the character of Prokofiev's invention shone through.

This all sounds TOO OFTEN like a rehash of the Cantata for the 20th Anniversary of the 1917 Revolution and Alexander Nevsky. But endearing and unmistakably Prokofiev for that reason.

No don't apprehend that. Version I heard in 1968 was about the same. But there wasn't a choral involved back then.

@@kaybeenullenvoyde9196 Do you have the link to the 1968 version? I'm interested in the instrumentation of those parts
