RIVERSIDE, CA - The Riverside Police Department’s Property Crimes Unit has been investigating recent burglaries to local businesses believed to have been committed by the same suspect. Dubbed the “snake burglar,” the suspect would typically remove a windowpane to break into a business, and then crawl along the floor to avoid any motion activations to the alarm system. He would cut open the safe and steal money before fleeing. Since July 2021, detectives believe the “snake burglar” has been responsible for over 70 commercial burglaries throughout Riverside. He has been arrested on numerous occasions, and was recently ordered to serve six sentences of 16 months in jail after pleading guilty to 23 felonies. However, laws or orders pertaining to overcrowding in the jail system allowed him to only serve less than 10 days in jail.
Since his last jail release in November 2022, 32-year-old Christopher Michael Jackson, a local transient, has continued victimizing more businesses with the latest occurring on April 5th in the Orangecrest Neighborhood of Riverside. That is until two nights ago around 10:15 p.m. on April 12th when our patrol officers responded to a commercial burglary in progress to a business in the 3900 block of Tyler Street. The security company responsible for monitoring surveillance systems at this business noticed a male suspect peering into the front of it. This suspect began tampering with the weather stripping around a window and security called our Public Safety Communications Center to report the possible burglary. Officers quickly arrived and the suspect was located nearby and detained. He was instantly recognized by officers as our known serial burglar.
Mr. Jackson had seven outstanding felony warrants for his arrest for prior commercial burglaries committed. He was arrested and later booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center where he is currently being held on $100,000 bail. During his booking process, Mr. Jackson was found concealing suspected methamphetamine, so additional narcotics violations were included.
“Legislative changes over the past decade, including AB109, Prop 47 and Prop 57, have made it increasingly difficult to ensure the safety of our citizens, but that does not stop our tireless efforts to do so,” stated Riverside Police Chief Larry Gonzalez. “We must, as a community, advocate for ourselves and each other to pressure state legislators to make sound reasonable changes in these laws to protect our residents and businesses. We do not want more punishment, but we do want more safety. Safety from being terrorized by habitual thieves feasting on us and on our justice system.”
The Property Crimes Unit is continuing their investigations and there are no other details to release at this time.
