Uh, where are you getting this? The 2009 remasters of the original stereo mixes of the Beatles catalog are still readily available on most streaming services - right alongside the recent Giles Martin remixes of their later albums. And for those albums, the 2009 remasters are usually available under a "Other Versions" section beneath the newer remixes (except for Revolver and the White Album where it's reversed and features the remix in that section). I've checked each one on KZitem Music just to be sure and they're all there. Apple Records has been very good about preservation of that particular catalog and they've never had any intention of having Giles Martin's new remixes supplant his father's original mixes. The 2009 remasters of the UK catalog - which includes both boxsets of the original UK Stereo and Mono mixes - are also still readily available for purchase on Amazon. So, let's not panic. Capitol is even readying a new mono vinyl boxset for release in November of the US versions of their early albums complete with the original 1960's US mixes.

The best way to describe what's happening with pitch correction is like cooking a steak and cutting off all the blackened parts because you want the meat to look and taste exactly the same all the way through. But those blackened end bits are what add to the flavor of the entire steak. You need little bits of these types of imperfections in order to create a meal that isn't "one note" as they say.... which ironically is the perfect metaphor for pitch correcting making a singer sound "one note"

What an atrocious thing to do to Freddy! One thing I wanted to add into the discussion around this "perfect" tuning is a reminder that 12-tone equal temperament is actually a harmonic _compromise_ to maximize flexibility for modulation that is necessary for something like piano, but not for flexible pitch sources like the human voice. For example, major thirds are actually quite sharp of the true just intonation harmony, and a musician with good intonation sense will often go to the natural harmonizing frequency instead of sticking to the equal temperament for the sake of it. This will "appear" as a flat note on a grid, but will actually sound more in tune harmony wise in many cases. Another aspect is that moments of "flat" and "sharp" massively help to convey emotion. I think of it as sharpness adding emotional tension and flatness adding emotional release. I was recording a vocal with a high, gritty, belted note where I was actually singing it in tune with equal temperament, but ended up intentionally bending it sharp because it actually sound better to give the note its edge and sit on top of the music. And conversely flatness can be like a sigh or release that feels like "letting go" of something. Freddy was a master at those things. Anyway, thanks for the analysis and adding online information for the younger generation to at least consider the benefits of leaving things more natural. Outside of mainstream there are some great new musicians that do, so that part is encouraging. Cheers!

I would imagine the original pitch of Freddie’s vocals beings consistently flat, was down to the tape running at a different speed, thus everything was pitched slightly off of concert standard

I put a great deal of effort trying to leave a legacy to my kids. Whether it’s financial, cultural, I try to expose my kids to as much of what the most inspiring people have achieved. Pitch correction ruins everything, so sad. As much as I love Queen, I can’t show my kids this Queen video. Modern pop music is not talent based and is why it won’t be relevant in 30-40 years. People are naturally drawn to talent that’s why older music catalogs are being sold for record amounts of money. Older music still accounts for most of streamed music. The decision to alter human talent with pitch correction will lead to a downfall of older music popularity in my opinion. The music industry is digging it’s own grave.

Great analysis Fil, I really enjoy your videos and have learned a lot about why I am having so much trouble connecting to new music that plays randomly over Spotify and I seem to be stuck with mainly loving the songs of my youth, not a terrible thing I guess. I've been a Queen fan from the start, not sure why they are allowing this to happen.

Totally feel your frustration… these amateurs, it’s horrible. What would be interesting to hear, something I haven’t seen you doing on your channel, is to play sections of a song together (the corrected and original version synchronized), so people can actually hear what you are showing them. You can instantly recognize how much tuning’s been done… Keep up your crusade!

Young people growing up with everything pitch corrected find it hard to listen to live uncorrected music that "doesn't sound like the record". I hear this a lot.
@qwinlyn
11 сағат бұрын
It’s been a thing since at least the 90s. I had friends *hate* going to live shows because they “sounded wrong” when they played something at all off the recording. Tempo, mixing, what have you. Not discounting the worseness of pitch correcting. It’s gross and shouldn’t happen, but let’s not say that it’s a new issue.

@@longsnapper5381 okay, but that's not far off of when I was talking about. You would have been 18 in 1977 (I did the math). Are you really trying to say that there weren't people at concerts back then complaining they didn't sound the same? Cause that just feels like nostalgia glasses and confirmation bias and my personal run ins with my parents friends (who are your age) tell me that feeling existed even back then. Has pitch correcting made it worse? Heck yeah. But it's not *new* and doesn't just apply to "young people."

@@qwinlyn No one I have ever known complained that a live show didn't sound like the record back in the day LOL. We aren't stupid now and we weren't stupid then. You're trying to sound like you're the smartest guy on the internet and you're proving that you aren't.

@@longsnapper5381If you think I'm trying to sound smart, so be it. I'm just hesitant to label something as a "younger people" problem when I've seen that it's not. I've known people of older generations who dislike live music cause it sounds wrong to them. And you've probably never talked to them because you have different likes than they do and gravitate towards people who share the same likes as you, just like all people do. To be more specific with this point in a hope you can understand where I'm coming from, I'll use myself as an example. I hate going to live theatre because it sounds "wrong" to my ears. I've been watching and listening to stage recordings my whole life, and consiously I understand that it's going to and should sound different, but it still sounds "wrong." None of that has anything to do with pitch correction and has everything to do with my brain. Are we to assume that I'm the only person ever to be *actually* unique or could we apply this to the past and assume that there have always been people who say a version sounds "wrong" to them. Going back far enough we can probbly be safe to assume that there were people who hated Person X in that opera, they can't hit the notes the same way Person Y does, or even a certain travelling band of minstrels that just didn't sound right. You are not wrong, pitch correction has made this substantially worse. But it's not exclusive to young people.

Annoying as hell EVEN IF they think Freddie’s voice is not perfect… nothing is perfect ! I liken it to that movie ‘ Invasion of the Body Snatchers’ after the people are replaced by the perfect being in the ‘ pod’ . I feel like screaming but why bother 😓😥😰 This is evil. Sounds to me a very young person is working, perhaps, his/her first job and as pitch correction is the "way to go" or first choice these days, this is what happens? but the band should have caught it. Thank you for making this video and yes, such an easy solution to change the frequency rather than all the vocals, but I guess one needs a good ear for that and not many have it, thank you

Do record producers actually believe that the public, when listening to Freddy, hears him being flat or sharp? I would contend only a very small minority of musicians would notice and even a smaller number would care. Most people appreciate the "originalness" of unique singers. It is part of the attraction to them as artists and that includes the variations they sing with. This trend to sanitize music is disgusting. Modern technology has hurt the ability to create great music, and has stained classics that have been altered. Stop it already.

It is now becoming apparent that this is down to sound engineers trying to justify their jobs. They are literally jobsworths who have to change something just to keep their job. They serve no useful purpose other than to be there and do something. When they retire, others will be empoyed to undo what they did. Just leave the bloody recordings as they were made. Those are what we have been listening to for years and we don't need some geek telling us that what we wanted to hear was wrong.

This was already an issue on the Live at the Rainbow '74 release in 2014. Gross levels of pitch correction were applied over the vocals, making it sound very unnatural. It's an even bigger shame to hear it being applied to studio recordings, especially on one of the first few Queen albums where Freddie had those gorgeous "crystalline" vocals. It's a mockery of his talent and skill he had as a vocalist.
