I have read this book four times in the last month. I think it’s a great novel and it catches the zeitgeist with breathtaking acuity. Labrouste is all of us. Houellebecq is the only writer worth reading today.

KFlorent13 , Houellebecq is the only writer confronting the issues of today and confronting them fearlessly.

Unpleasant was the right word. I really liked MH’s book Submission that I am thinking of making a video about. This one, however, even if it is well-crafted, I found it very difficult to read. The main character is unlikable and the perversions are really discusting. The dive into the abyss of obsceneity is so steep that you start questioning the writer’s character and judgement. It is a part of what makes MH’s writing unique and interesting, but I just didn’t like how this book made me feel.

Thanks for the rundown on this book...I was wondering if I wanted to read it. The content of the book sounds horrible. I think I might start with "Submission" instead as a starter book.

It's a difficult book for sure but I'm glad I read it. Submission is also quite good, and if I remember correctly, it's slightly less sexually depraved.

I heard someone call it a commentary on capitalism, Western society, and the decline of morality on the Left. According to this person, Michel H's books are very "meta". Surely the book is more that just the literal story... How does this evaluation land with you? I am very interested to get my hands on it now.

Yes, everything I've read by him has overt social or political commentary. And his novel 'The Map and The Territory' is definitely meta!

Good introduction: thank you. I would have appreciated if you had analyzed the writing itself, as I read a few lines from Submission, and I found it not at all well crafted, while the first novels of his are great.

Thank you. I've found all of his novels have a distinct writing style, in this regard I find him to be extremely versatile, even if most of his books share a similar world view. Serotonin feels very personal and has a straight forward, direct approach. Even when the voice verges on a rant it never feels rambling or uncalculated. This is a tight, methodically structured novel. Those are a few of my thoughts on the writing style of the novel. Best regards,

I just finished it. I think it's his best book, BY FAR, but truly and unbearably AWFUL, in the literal sense. When I hit the chapter re his old girlfriend's 4 yo child, yikes. It was unbearable, but brilliant. This novel isn't about farmers and the European Union, it's about a man bidding adieu to life. Do you think it's a done deal that he is going to off himself at the end? I think not, because-well, because of the earlier incidents involving guns, birds, and 4 yo children.

Oh fun! Thank you for letting me know you read it. I almost felt bad for not mentioning the poor French farmers, but you're right, it's not really about that.
