THANK YOU. I’m a hairstylist and had a nagging pain between my shoulder blades for the last five years, and had trouble finding the source until now. This video solved my shoulder and back pain!!!! Never in a million years would I have guessed it to be the serratus anterior. These stretches and exercises WORK. Thank you for the videos, the work you do is so valuable and very helpful.

Thank you very much for this video. I recently started boxing, and this muscle gets sore very easily in the sport. Getting advice to stretch from coaches is great and helps, but understanding in better depth the muscle and its exact role when it comes to movement is just better. Also learning is just fun

I’m curious if this would help my uneven bench press? the bar is slightly slanted to one side when I’m pressing
@drdozellodc

It's worth a try. While benching, you may be protracting the scapula on the higher side due to tightness in the serratus anterior.

I am in severe and constant pain in my left serratus anterior muscle. I'm assuming it's muscle weakness since I no longer workout the way I used to. These stretches look amazing. Can I stretch the muscle even though it's in pain?
@drdozellodc
3 жыл бұрын
If I were you I would move into the stretch slowly, hold a mild comfortable stretch and move out of the stretch slowly. If a stretch or exercise elicits or intensifies symptoms, I would stop immediately and find another one.

Do the serratus anterior stretches stretch the pec minor as well? I am trying to partially reverse the effects of surgery performed back in the early 1990s. I had a portion of my right pec minor removed years ago which eliminated pain in my right pec but now I have tightness in my upper back on the left. Following surgery, the rib cage on the right rotated forward and dropped , while on the left, it rotated to the rear and elevated. These changes occurred perhaps 6 months after surgery. I had scoliosis (which nobody made mention of), bulked up with muscle in my 20s, developed pec/shoulder/arm/finger pain, and the surgery caused a release. I'm not sure if my spine rotated and tilted after the surgery or my shoulders did. My goal is to reverse some of the movement via exercise. I've been strengthening the pec minor on the right (surgery side) and stretching it on the left. It appears I should do the same for the serratus anterior. This was very informative and new to me. Thank you.

Thank you my watching the video and for asking such a great question. The answer to your question is yes. If the pec minor is tight or short, the serratus anterior stretches will also stretch the pec minor muscle. Here are links to four of my videos on chest muscle and serratus anterior stretching that may provide you useful information. Please let me know if you have any questions. @drdozellodc

There are multiple reasons for scapular winging, If the source of your scapular winging is tightness in the serratus anterior, stretching the serratus anterior will help. If you have really wide shoulders the foam roller may be too thin.. i taped two tennis balls together and moved them up and down the foam roller to make a wider, more pressuring spot. If you find this stretch ALMOST doing it but frustratingly not quite getting deep enough try what I did. Tennis balls basically looking like this olo if the l is the foam roller

@@drdozellodc I'm curious about the anatomical reason as to why this stretch (hands clasped behind head) doesn't work standing though. Is it because the SA can't go into a relaxed state while standing?
@drdozellodc

Good question. If I were you I would try the stretch standing with fingers clasped behind the head while holding scapular retraction (pinching the shoulders blades together). This is the opposite motion the serratus anterior perform.

Would tight serratus anterior cause scapular winging
@drdozellodc
4 жыл бұрын
Yes, tightness of the serratus anterior can cause scapular winging. When contracted in a concentric manner the serratus anterior protracts the scpaula (Moves the medial border of the scapula away from the spine.)
