This may sound crazy, but it works and works insanely well. I ordered a radiator fan for my mothers suv, but never got around to switching her car over to electric fan. I plugged it up to my computer power supply because my power supply will throw 1,000 watts to the 12 volt rail if needed. The fan only needs 120 watts. I was blown away literally by how powerful it is compared to ac fans we have in the house. We had a Lasko box fan my dad burned up outside identical to the one in the video. I stripped it and removed the ac motor and took the motor off the rad fan and installed it inside the Lasko frame and even used the Lasko fan because the rad fan is designed for static pressure of pulling or pushing through a radiator. IT had 10 small blades that work great for pulling air through rad, but not as effect at just blowing air around a room. I keep the fan in my room and power is supplied from an old computers power supply. This is bulky, but it doesn't leave my room. I am sure you could find a small power supply. It would have to be rated at 12v and over 120 Watt+. I also bought a dc fan speed controller with a power switch. All together the rad fan cost $30 and the speed controller was $15. This fan is so much more powerful it is crazy. They are supposed to use less energy than ac fan too.
@JordanU
5 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a good build, but I'd say it definitely needs its own power supply so it can be independent of the computer.. Radiator fan motors are built to withstand a lot more than a standard household fan motor is, and by motor theory that DC motor is going to be much more efficient than an AC shaded pole motor..

I should say, it's a box fan, still is blue metal and looks the same but the switch may be different. Very good video man! that startup sound was pretty sweet! i might have an idea what that windown sound thing was. there was like a "nipple" on the middle of the blade hub. my guess is that was rubbing the front guard. also thats the first one iv seen from that era with the "nipple" on the blade hub.
@JordanU
9 жыл бұрын
***** Thanks bro.. the startup sound on these is pretty good.. one of my favorites since I've been hearing it since I was very young.. That's a good theory about the sound but I have to diminish is because the guard on this one is actually warped out.. probably from being stored in the attic.. so there's almost an inch of space between the guard and the blade.. but I know what you mean about them being so close.. mine I think scrapes against the guard.. I've always found the 'nipple' to be very odd.. what eras typically have them?
@torythefanman
9 жыл бұрын
the "nipple" came about sometime around late 2000-01. its still on Lasko's current box fan blade sets. id say the warping of the grill may have caused this. i know the older ones like your other 3733 and my 3723. (with the same blade) dont have that nipple thing.
@JordanU

***** Okay I'm totally confused here lol.. This fan in the video is the same exact one that I have.. came from the same store on the same day.. but this one is my grandfathers.. I have one also.. Same fans, but theres two of them.. That having been said.. the other 3733 (mine) has the nipple.. The grill on the one in the video with the sound is warped away from the blade set.. its not making contact.. it must be something in the bearings.. not entirely sure.. That having been said.. I suppose that concludes that these box fans are from 2000 and not 1999.. I would love to know what the purpose of this 'nipple' is..
@torythefanman
9 жыл бұрын
Im not really sure what its inteended propose is..LOL my only guess is to keep the grill from rubbing the grill. my 3723 does not have the nipple. so it must have been made before both of your 3733's. (sorry. i can really make things sound confusing sometimes..LOL)

If, after performing the tasks described here, the fan still does not operate, is the unit worth saving? Are there other simple tasks that can be performed? I'm thinking about fuses, capacitors, etc. Thanks.
@JordanU
5 жыл бұрын
This has a shaded-pole motor, so there's no capacitors.. There is a thermal fuse inside the motor that can be replaced if you're comfortable with precision wiring.. A multi-meter will help determine where the point of failure is, if you've verified that your switch is working then you'll want to measure the continuity of the motor's leads against the common to determine its health.. If there's 0 or close to 0 continuity, then the fuse may need to be replaced.. I'd argue your unit is worth saving if it's old enough to have the bigger motor as the one seen in the video.. The ones currently in manufacture do not move nearly as much air as these earlier units do..

@JordanU

If you have a continuous-duty application, you will want to find a fan with a sealed ball bearing motor.. Any motor with sleeve bearings is going to require regular service if ran continuously..
