I've followed the Dakar Rally now for years, but I lost interest in the cars back in the 90's.However for me its the trucks that make it enjoyable. Watching these huge vehicles hammering across the desert is just way more spectacular than the cars or bikes.

Absolutely, and not that it matters to you or anyone else, nor should it, I 100% agree! Why I find it so amazing, I do not know but it is really something to behold. it seems bigger the vehicle the smaller the effort is traversing the unforgiving landscape. And talk about the speed at which these great race machines compete, for a truck, put, many of the cars to shame I am sure. (O.k., not entirely sure of the car comment but my imagination races when it comes to these trucks!)

The truck catagories changed for the Dakar series in south America. Camion / truck teams used to have 3 x types of trucks, race trucks, chase trucks and service trucks. Previously all trucks drove the same course and the race trucks and chase trucks were all part of the race. The chase truck was fast service support for the race trucks, the service trucks also had competitors numbers but didn't really compete. In South America the service trucks do not follw the same route as the race trucks and stay more on tarmac road and hard stone road, hence they use road tyres.

It's worth mentioning that their are three classes of trucks, there are service trucks that race (Class T4.3) like the smaller one shown here, production trucks that have little modification (few enter in this class but they race as T4.1), but the true beasts are the actually race trucks that run under the modified class, T4.2. They are full on racers and don't stop to support other competitors. instead of being run by car or bike manufactures and teams, they are run by the truck manufactures, like Kamaz, Hino, and MAN, and they are absolute monsters. These things are so crazy that they had to put restrictions on their speeds (140 km/h, 87 mph) because the minimum weight to get into the class is 3500kg (7716 lb) and with over 1000hp some of these things were pushing speeds approaching 200 km/h (125 mph), making them very dangerous not only to the crew but to the other teams around them. Imaging being on a bike and a 5 ton truck blows past you doing over 100 mph. To give you an idea on the levels these things can get to, the Kamaz truck for the 2020 season (note they have won 16 of the last 20 years, including the last 4 years straight) weights 19,000 pounds and puts out 1,150 hp with an ungodly amount of torque (over 3,000 ft-lbs, over 4,000 Nm).

I'm no mechanic, I can hardly tell a nut from a bolt, but if I had to go on a Dakar rally one of these truck would be way more appealing to me than a car competitor. The get stuff going again concept is way more awesome than just going fast. Just like logistics is way more interesting than combat.

Wow people this is my last comment about this, but let me just say that J.F. puts a lot of work into organizing and filming all of this, and he's one of the reasons why there is so much interesting behind the scenes videos of these car companies and racing teams. If you want scripted mainstream BS and tacticool editing with presenters reading off of scripts, then go watch Top Gear....
