Thanks to you and your video, I brought my SX-580 back to life. It was dead and I was going to toss it when I came across your video. The only thing wrong was that little 33 ohm fusible resistor was open. I replaced it and my SX-580 is working like new again. Thank you!

You're welcome John. Since I've made this video I've discovered another resistor that goes open to check for. I don't remember the value, but if looking from the rear with the top off it's to the left of one of the main power supply capacitors, burried under some wire and a large rectangular power resistor. This should be replaced with a .5w equivalent. When it opens both channels offset -30vdc, which is harmful to your speakers
@JordanPier

It's a 100 ohm 1/4 watt - should be half watt. Comes directly off the main negative power supply capacitor

Thanks for the presentation. I have an Akai AM U03 which also uses 'power packs', and I just purchased a digital radio, with bluetooth. It has external removeable links from the tone controls (including volume) to the power stage, and have joined the line output from the digital radio directly to the power stage, and volume, tuning controlled remotely.. At some point, I'll clean up the switches and pot's using the 'extended tube' method you show..

Hi Jordan. Excellent video. I think I picked my 580 up at an auction a few years ago. One day it quit. Found a loose connection on the lamp fuse. I don`t know why whole thing quit. Maybe not. Then the dial string came loose. Could`t restring, so put away. The other day decided to take a look. Thought of you tube. Wala! There you were. Followed string configuration. Beautiful! Works perfect. Paying attention to the tuner, I also noticed a 1/4 inch end play on the drum shaft. The play is in the 1/8 inch part of the shaft, splined into the small drive gear, which drives the tuner gear. I may try to see if I can reduce that play, since too far out, can rub cabinet inside wall. Just thought I`d mention it. Will always keep this radio, and just like to maintain in good order. Thanks for help.

Always had a spot in my heart for BTO. A few things about your SX- 580 receiver. It retailed for about $250 in 1979. Was roughly 18"x13"x5" and weighed 19lbs. Power is 20WPC (not killer but ok for efficient speakers). THD and IM are 0.3% (not good but acceptable for 1979) and signal/noise ratio of 73db phono / 90db line. This unit did have a good FM front end for FM reception. Also a tape monitor and an AUX input. Where the SX- 580 fails is when compared to the SX- 550 and SX- 535. You really don't need power meters on a 20watt receiver, better to have two tuning meters and where the SX- 580 has one tape loop both the 535 and 550 had TWO (with one way dubbing). Very handy for copying tapes. Plus these receivers had an AUX input too! Pioneer did have a great budget receiver in the SX- 450 and SX- 434 and if you check ebay you'll see good SX- 450's selling for $100-$150, you'll see SX- 434's for $100+. I've seen (serviced) SX- 525's for $150 and SX- 535's for $295!! The SX- 550 also runs in the $150 and up range. The SX- 580 might SPEC. OUT better but the other Pioneers are more popular. Go figure? The 580 IS a good receiver, check out the "CLASSIC RECEIVERS" site. Me? I always liked the "Pioneer Blue" look of the SX- 434 series. It was soooo 1970's! I still use an SX- 434 in my kitchen system. It powers a Nakamichi BX-1 cassette deck and Boston Acoustics A- 40 speakers. Remember now, the SX- 434 is from 1974 thru 1976. That's about 41 years ago. Folks, that is QUALITY stuff!

On the deoxit double tube. I was rescreening my windows when the bulb lit up. A short length of .185 or slightly larger window screen spline, slipped over the red tube, works great as a tiny spray hose for out of the reach locations.

It's a shame that as good as the deoxit sprays are that they not only refuse to make it easy to use for what it is intended but have also made it even harder with the oversized unflexible hose and what they send with the bottle won't even fit into the spray nozzle. They need one that is super long, super flexible (near limp) and you could cut it to whatever length you want or make 2 different size hoses from the one piece. Maybe you have some pointers?

This series, at least the higher power versions, were among the least reliable of any Pioneer receivers. The voltage regulators ran so hot they essentially unsoldered themselves from the PCB. They also clipped really dirty and were famous for frying tweeters. This was when Pioneer put all the money into the cosmetics and cut ever corner on the internals but they still sold well because they looked nice.

Joel Stolarski if hum in both channels, likely a power supply failure (open capacitors) -but if only one channel likely a failure of the stk-0029 power amplifier ic. Check for DC voltage at the speaker tetminals. Should be less than 50 millivolts

@JordanPier
6 жыл бұрын
Joel Stolarski the meter is reading beyond the 200 millivolts range you have it set to. In any case, the left amplifier ic is bad and needs replacement. The lack of sound in the right may be due to a dirty switch or control, or the supply voltage may be getting pulled down by the bad amplifier ic. Either way it needs fixing

Joel Stolarski it's not a current production part from any major manufacturer. The ones on eBay are hit or miss. Some work fine, others are counterfeit - either they don't work properly and distort, or not at all. If you're electronics savy, you can build one from scratch. There's schematics out there for a diy stk-0029. If you plan on keeping it, it's worth the effort to build one

I think it's just the volume control itself that accounts for the slight difference in output level of the two channels. Been servicing as you have for over 30 years. For test purposes I just re-adjust the balance control as necessary to balance the channels, or use the invert/add function (plus the balance control) to null it on the scope, then switch the scope back to normal display. I can be anal about the two channels matching while testing power etc. :-)

Hello, I have a quick question. A family member was recently trying to clean a similar Pioneer machine with compressed air, and after doing so realized that the FM completely stopped working and that the AM only worked at high frequencies. He didn't use any sort of liquid lube, just a can of air, but we're wondering if it caused the tuner issue that you mentioned-where its capacitance changed and became unusable. Thanks
@JordanPier
7 жыл бұрын
+Plat the can of air is technically compressed refrigerant which can contain moisture. It may have been moisture got between the fins, or something was jostled loose. Always clean with a natural bristle brush and blow dust out with a pure air source like a vacuum exhaust or pressure regulated compressor.

I'd stop using it until you can get this resolved. the fuseable resistor mentioned in the video can cause this as well as loose ground screws - also covered in the video. the fact that both left and right are doing the same thing points to a common failure - likely in the power supply.

Great info, very informative. I do need some clarification though. I see some other repair techs say never use deoxit on pots, only on switch contacts. Because the deoxit has lube in it that messes up the carbon. You look to be able to use it with no problem. Can you explain? Do you use the deoxit 5, the deoxit gold or which one. Also what is the deoxit part number for the pump can? Thank you.
@JordanPier
7 жыл бұрын
Tom , deoxit is fine for switches and rotary pots. however some slide pots use a silicone based lube that is necessary for correct operation - which deoxit washes out. for this purpose they have caig faderlube, aka F5. D5 I'd the regular deoxit. D5p is the pump spray

I do service equipment. The philosophy of preventive maintenance is good, but luxman's are over built and I rarely see one with a failure unless it's been caused by carelessness or abuse. 1. Use it. Exercise infrequently used switches and controls 2. Keep it ventilated 3. Don't overload it (no less than 4 ohms total speaker load) 4. Don't connect or disconnect stuff while powered on 5. Don't use giant monster wire and interconnects. Follow these principals and you'll be able to enjoy that lux for a long time

The stereo light and the signal strength meter stop working as well. The amplifier continues to function, I can play music through aux. If I turn the unit off for about 30 minutes, it will repeat the process of the radio working for for a few minutes and stopping again. Any ideas what specific things might be failing? I'm going to follow your advice of re-soldering any connections on the back of the board that look dodgy.
@JordanPier
8 жыл бұрын
sounds like the 12v regulator is failing. it's job is to supply power to the radio. if there is a hum accompanied with the radio fading out them it's likely a capacitor opening. if no hum, likely the regulator transistor is opening or driver transistor in regulator circuit has lost beta
@tels7ar
8 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I checked the regulator and found that indeed when the radio fails the emitter on that transistor goes from 12v down to 0v, while the base and collector remain at the proper voltages. Thus I assume the 2sd712 is bad and must be replaced.

I wonder if similar applies to the Pioneer SX-1000TW? I just bought one which most likely will need basic servicing.

You can use this as a baseline for a 1000tw, but it will more than likely need alot of capacitors and replacement transistors for the 2sc458s if it has any

Hello.. My SX-680 tuner gets stuck around 103 and then the knob slips and wont go any higher. Any tips on fixing it?

Check for string overlapping at the knob flywheel pulley. If so grease up the string to keep it from wandering to the end of the pulley where it overlaps and binds. Otherwise keeper on the tuner assbly.has been misindexed likely due to it being taken apart and not reassembled properly. Tricky to resolve that

Great video! My Dad finally let me have his sx-1280 and would like to clean it up. Are there any switches or dials (other than the tuner) that I should keep the deoxit away from? The only issue with the unit is the phono button. Under normal conditions, the right channel plays at half the level of the left. When I push the phono button all the way in and hold it, the volume is normal. Is deoxit safe for those buttons? Thanks!

Yes, it is safe. It's best to remove the front panel completely and spray deoxit down where the switch button shafts pertrude from the chassis. You can hold one down while you work the others to prevent them from latching. While you're at it you can clean the front panel and dial glass - which typically gets dusty.

@@JordanPier thanks for getting back to me. I just finished tearing it down and putting it back together. Polished all the knobs and buttons. I found a product to work really well for Cleaning the face. After Windex and magic eraser started erasing the lettering, I tried GE screen cleaner thinking it was stainless cleaner, and it worked beautifully! It removed the grime with ease but none of the lettering. I will disassemble and deoxit when my Amazon delivery arrives. Thanks again!!!

the only "closer" to you would be Glenn McDonald (echowars) in MO, or Terry DeWicket in Tennessee. Both are great techs in vintage audio. Both might be backed up with work for some time. goggle em!

Jordan Pier Thank you so much because I have this same receiver. I would like your advice, because I know not much about electronics but thought I could fix it. The speaker terminals had gotten crushed during moving and I only had one working. So I ordered the same terminals off ebay, and replaced them. I know I connected everything correctly but now when I turn on the receiver I get a really big hum and I don't know what's wrong. Any advice? I just didn't have the extra cash to take it to the repair shop but maybe I should have, I don't know, but would appreciate anything you can tell me, and thank you for great videos. I just wish there had been a video on replacing these particular terminals, I couldn't find one ANYWHERE, and believe me, I looked. Thanks.

Hey Wendy, if the hum is in both channels, it's likely some part of the circuit board got hurt from the impact that rattled through the terminals when they got injured. Open ground, capacitor that got broken, knocked loose, or failed out of coincidence. If the hum is only in one side, it could be that the terminal assemy had shorted out, causing damage to one of the amplifiers. Hard to point you in the right direction without having the machine in front of me

@@JordanPier Yes, of course. I think I will probably end up taking it to be repaired, because my knowledge is too limited. The sound almost scares me when I turn it on, it's just real loud and then there's like a pop. Both meters jump initially but then only one of them moves after that. I thank you for answering, and again, great videos. Thanks much.

Austin Stereo Service, Austin, Texas or Tapehead Electronics, Austin, Texas, both are reputable outlets. I have used them both for vintage gear.

Hi, What can you connect to this amplifier? 4 (4ohm) speakers? 4 speakers of (8ohm)? If I connect from (8ohm), the output power is 10w per channel or it outputs 20W, thank you

I , too , am wondering about using 4 ohm speakers . I am better off just sticking to 8 ohms?

I have this reciever and the service manual.If you hook 4 ohm speakers its rated 25 watts per channel and for 8 ohms its rated 20 watts per channel. I wouldn't recommend hooking 4 ohm to it unless you have had it recently serviced/inspected for any problems beforehand.
