I was given a Speedmaster as a BD gift around July 30, 1969, just after Buzz Aldrin wore his on the moon as the first "Moonwatch". Armstrong left his 321 Speedy hanging on the LEM because the LM's internal clock went caput during TLI. My watch came with a plastic type crystal (Hesilite) which would scratch easily. This was because NASA didn't want broken pieces of glass floating in the cabin, in case of a face crack. However, years later, I sent the watch back to Omega for repairs. Omega upgraded the watch with all new hands and put a newer semi plastic crystal glass face on it. It is still Hesilite, but a more hardened version of it. I read it was common for Omega to do it this way back, rather than to try to maintain the original watch. The back of the watch doesn't have the "moon stamp" on it because the watch was pre-moon landing version. I've since learned that it has the .861 movement, probably one of the first Speedys with the upgraded movement. Thank you, Sid, below, but I had the watch opened recently to verify the movement. It is the .861 and I edited this comment since I last wrote it. But it was probably one of the first .861's made during this transitional period. Also, Omega gave me a new metal wristband during the refurb. The cost was only about $300 U.S. for the repair back in the 1990's. The original watch cost about $275- $300 U.S. with a twenty percent discount from Bambergers, now Macys. BTW, It is now known that the Bulova watch was worn by David Scott on Apollo 15 because his "Speedy" broke during the flight. Hum, why did he bring a backup Bulova with him which looked similar to the Speedmaster? All the Speedmasters were the property of NASA, so they are all now in museums, except the first Speedy on the moon worn by Buzz Aldrin. It was "lost in the mail" during shipment. Wow, the first and only Moon watch worn on the Moon was Buzz Aldrin's Speedmaster, and it was lost in the mail during shipment? And Dave Scott's Bulova Moonwatch recently sold for 1.625 million U.S. on an internet website auction because it was a private watch, not subject to NASA control? HUM. I wonder who possesses Buzz's Speedmaster on display in their private library next to their Cuban cigar and fine Cognac collection? Just wondering. No conspiracy theory here.

I know people who dont have to do a damn and buy a watch for its brand name and looks but not knowing the functions or whatsoever. The speedmaster that i want is 6250$(open caseback) with additional 15% disc. My parents are willing to pay the rest of the money for the moonwatch i want but yeah lets see. :)

Well, they won't stop running at the service due point, similar to how your car will run fine thousands of miles after it was due a service. Luxury and affordable mechanical watches on the whole operate on the same principles, luxury watches just use better quality components. I service my watches every 5 years or so - I'd say your automatic is due one even if it's running fine.

It's not something that has to be done every year. I got my 10 year old watch a full overhaul and the factory said the O-ring seals were long gone. A drink splashing on it would have ruined the watch. Also, to my suspicion, it was running a tad too quickly so they had to slightly reduce the speed of the second hand.

I will not service my watch, before something start to show it needs service, if the time is more off than usual etc. The newer watches from Omega can go for years without service maybe 15-20 years if not more. They tell you 5 years so they can make money. If its running well no need for service.
