How does he make everything so aspirational and yet feel attainable??? Rajiv is a gift!

Attainable? Try finding a a quality antique basket with a lid like that not easy and not cheap. Not to mention a 100% cotton red gingham blanket. Nothing about this is attainable. And the location and free time to be alone is a luxury as well.

@@zestrus11 I believe he’s modeling a concept, not dictating a formula. He’s jogging our memory of “the classic picnic” and encouraging incorporating some old school components which make the experience different from everyday habits, thus making it special. Just using parchment or wax paper evokes memories for a lot of us and would be a fun talking point if you did it with your friends or kids. You can use any blanket or tarp to sit on. Any cooler or box to transport the goodies. Any activity to spend an hour in old-fashioned relaxation. Not to stress, zestrus! 🤎 It’s a little video to encourage a free/cheap way to spend a little time enjoying nature, hanging out with yourself or someone you like, keeping “the old ways” going. You are right about the place and time. But that’s a further encouragement Rajiv makes! Carving out an hour to disrupt your hectic schedule is self-care. Spending it in whatever spot with a little nature and fresh air is a bonus. Maybe a coworker you like would be blessed by a Subway sandwich and a sparkling water at a city park for the lunch hour would be a positive disrupter and make a memory?

Zestrus11...my goodness, you do not have to get an expensive basket or an expensive blanket. You are so negative, he is giving you an example to follow not duplicate exactly item for item. If you cannot be alone, try to teach those with you how to enjoy a peaceful snack/lunch without your phone.

I think the point he was trying to make was that you don't need everything shiny and new or synthetic.Natural materials, second hand (not necessarily antique, unless you can afford it) and things you make yourself. Time? Time away from gadgets, devices, noise?@@zestrus11

He’s just Old School. He has learned how things were done in a time when there were manners, and traditions, and social norms adhered to by the vast majority. I’ve come to realize that the very thing people scoff at now….self-control supported by the control of social culture….is what made things work much better in the past. This idea of a picnic without plastic, devices, and the treat of eating outdoors, then spending some unhurried recreational time is how a picnic used to be. Nowadays we have to plan more intentionally because of those dang devices, because there are fewer places to go be outside casually, because most people don’t have the necessary picnic equipment on hand. I did take my kids on picnics when they were young. We didn’t have a darling basket. I used a cardboard box that I’d wrapped in red and white gift wrap paper. It stored kitschy thrift store salt and pepper shakers, plastic tumblers, and paper plates. We had a huge tatami mat that had belonged to my grandma to sit on and we ate simple fare because that’s what kids like. We took boxed watercolors and paper, and everyone brought a book. Actually, “nature journals” evolved from our picnics. By the time they were in middle school, we’d pack sandwiches and thermoses of soup and strike out for a nearby beach or woodland park to walk around and sketch and paint on the spur of the moment, often on school nights! Then we’d eat our simple dinner which seemed extra delicious because of the fresh air! Four out of five of my kids now do this with their own children occasionally. It’s free and relaxing and makes lovely memories. Except for that one time somebody stepped on a ground hornets nest. 😂 I wanted to share that on rainy afternoons we used to have picnics on the living room floor. Another favorite memory my now-adult kids frequently bring up is when we’d eat in odd places at home. I loved to bundle everybody up and have hot cocoa on the porch during snowfalls or set up card tables in front of the fireplace in the living room for dinner (especially when the Christmas tree was up in there). We ate in everybody’s bedroom 😳, in the basement, in the garage, under makeshift tarp tents in the backyard. Eating in weird places is so strangely exciting! Crafting, sleeping, playing board games, sewing and handwork, homework…it’s always special when you change things up. That’s the spirit of a picnic, no? Sorry for the epistle. Golly, do I love this channel!

I'm old enough that I remember when we'd travel when I was young in the (ahem) 1950s and early 1960s, the concept of 'fast food' just...didn't exist. we traveled with this gigantic silver metal insulated box (I was thinking that it was made by Coleman but everything they did was plaid) and my mom had fixed all the sandwiches and fruit and these cookie sort of things that she called 'fruit bars' but which I think were sort of a second cousin to fruit cake, really). We didn't have interstates at that time yet, so a trip that today takes about 3-4 hours took about 5-6 hours then, so that sort of travel was more like a safari. My mom would take her knitting and finish off whatever major sweater project she was working on. My sister and I would bring books and coloring books. Major undertaking!

This is how it was done when I was a child in the '50s. We didn't have plastic wrapping, we used wax paper. We didn't have plastic cutlery and plates so we took our proper cutlery and plates from the kitchen drawers and cupboards. We used a woollen blanket with a table cloth on the ground and then spent hours and days picking and shaking the bits of grass and plants from the wool. Til the next picnic. Now I'm in my 70s and I live in a wet and built part of the world. My favourite picnic these days is a carpet picnic or a table picnic, with a couple of friends. I lay it out with cloth napkins and my favourite plates. I use my brightly striped glasses that I bought years ago in a junk shop. I have a hand made cheese knife. The handle is made with layers of different coloured wood. So we talk, and laugh and enjoy the food and each other. At the end there is nothing to throw away. Thank you Rajiv for reminding me and for keeping the right way to have a picnic alive. Roll on summer!

We are more than twice your age, so we mostly like to eat our picnic at a picnic table, but absolutely agree with the principle of making it as beautiful and elegant as possible. Our linen tablecloth and napkins and beautiful equipment make some people laugh, but that's their loss. Even for sandwiches to be eaten on a trail we still make sure virtually nothing is disposable, which is no big deal since you have to pack everything out with you anyway. Lightweight and permanent aren't incompatible at all.

One of those children was my great grandmother, who in turn taught her future husband how to read, with those very same prayer books. I don't use those in my everyday life though! Rajiv, this reminded me of my sister, her family and I went to a Jane Austen day in Hampshire, England. If you went in costume, you got in free. You should have seen us in our authentic looking 18th century dress! We took a picnic, making the kind of food they would have made back then and only taking crockery and cutlery etc that would have been in use then, so yes, absolutely no plastic! We had a wonderful day, loads of people taking photos of us, and my brother~in~law taking lots of photos of us too [ our only concession!]. We were so looking forward to seeing the photos, only to discover when we got home, that there was no film in the camera! So we only have the memories in our minds. When I lived in Wales, our town had a Victorian week and my family did the same thing, great costumes and an authentic style picnic, no plastic. Great fun, great memories. But that time we had photos!

I am very old-fashioned, especially when it comes to picnics. My picnics are a proper meal, not a snack. Meals times should always be an event. I really ought to be a Victorian gentleman with a couple of servants to set it all up for me...😊 I use china plates (often my old blue and white Willow Pattern, which is robust), real glasses, cups and saucers, and silverware. I usually have an easily portable chair (getting back off the ground is less than elegant with my arthritis) set up on tartan blankets. The chair is wide enough that my dog can curl up next to me. I use my wicker basket as a table for glasses, and so on. If I'm somewhere where I eat not far from the car, I have been known to use a folding table, particularly at the beach (where my main course might be fish and chips from a nearby shop - fish and chips tastes so good when sitting on the beach). I will have a three course meal: some finger food for starters, such as small Scotch egg or mini pies; a salad for main course, transported in glass containers and served on a proper plate; dessert will often be fruit, usually prepared in advance; maybe cheese and biscuits to end. Sandwiches play no part in my picnics unless I'm having afternoon tea as a picnic. Then it is all finger food, small sandwiches, small cakes, tea from a tea cup. I've got used to people stopping to see what I'm doing, and many comment on how they wish they had the same. I understand why people don't do it. It takes a lot of effort, but for me, it's worth it. I'm happy to picnic alone (plus dog), but I love doing this for a guest. Usually, they feel pleased that I've taken time over this. My only concession to modernity, apart from the chair, is taking a flask of hot water and another of iced water for making drinks. No plastic, though, stainless steel only. I used to do the same for lunch when I worked. If I couldn't get out for a picnic (I live in England, where opportunities are limited), I'd put a small cloth on my desk (a fancy tea towel was perfect) and serve up a similar meal to the above. Some colleagues used to come every day to see what I'd brought in for lunch. I reckon I could have set up a lunch service if I'd wanted, though I think that they'd have wanted to be guest rather than customer 😊). I do take a mobile phone with me. Sometimes, I'm in a place where I will play music that's appropriate. I can get silence in lots of places, but to sit on the Malvern Hills (a favourite place) and see the countryside that influenced Elgar, it is so appropriate to play his music. In these circumstances the phone enhances the experience rather than distracts from it.

In a way, I feel like I already do have Rajiv as a friend. Also, maybe he posts these videos to encourage us to listen to our soul telling us to pursue what we see, love and cherish.

I had that style of picnic basket and gingham table cloth and went on many a picnic with it. It was a pure joy to remember. I no longer have that basket, but have fond memories. Thank you for reminding me.

Lovely! I would recommend taking something to wash your hands with too (some water and a small facecloth). I'm sure people are not only envious of your beautiful picnic spread, but also that gorgeous sweater you are wearing.
