This video about Setting Aquascape Without CO2, Filter and Fertilizer is the first video of a series in my Walstad Method Project. This Aquascape Without CO2, Filter and Fertilizer will be updated. The first update is here:

Setting an aquascape without CO2, filter and fertilizer is possible by using The Walstad Method. The Walstad Method is a way to setting a planted tank with a substrate containing a soil under layer. The basic principle is to create a balanced ecosystem where our fish and plants provide each other needs. The plants will absorb ammonia and nitrate while our fish produce them all the time. This method to setting an aquascape allow us to minimize the maintenance including water change schedule. Of course, we still need to do water change once for a while but it doesn’t have to be once a week.
Aquascape without CO2 like the one in this video can only grow low demanding plants. A plant with high CO2 needs will barely survive in this kind of environment. The list of plants used in this tank are:
1. Helanthium tenellum
2. Sattaria subulata
3. Cryptocoryne wendtii
4. Bolbitis heteroclita
5. Sagittaria subulata
6. Limnophila-sessiliflora
7. Cabomba caroliniana
8. Cabomba furcata
9. Egeria densa
all of them but Cryptocoryne wendtii and Bolbitis heteroclita are easy to grow and low demanding plants. That’s why this aquascape without CO2 will works (supposedly).
Aquascape without filter is prone to an algae outbreak due to unbalance nutrients and less water movements. Using fast growing plants such as cabomba, hydrilla and frog bit can prevent this problem. Those plants can quickly absorb ammonia, nitrate and other nutrients from the water and prevent algae to grow. Aquascape without filter with fast growing plants like this should be algae free but anything can happen especially before the plants settled.
Our plants definitely need macro and micro nutrients but aquascape without fertilizer like this can still provide them. Using a layer of soil underneath, like the usual Walstad Method, our plants can still absorb nutrients from their roots. Normally, an aquascape without fertilizer like this can only provide our plants need for six months but we’ll see how long it will sustain.
