"It's not gonna sound super good..." Sounds super good! Thanks so much for this series. For someone who just grabbed a Focusrite 18i20 and a bunch of mics for my kit, this is super helpful to me for someone who has to start from scratch. I've been looking for something like this for a few days now, and you explained everything perfectly.

hey man, is the focusrite 18i20 the only thing you’re using for your audio interface. I wasn’t sure if it was able to record more than 2 stereo tracks into the DAW as i can find no evidence of this on youtube!

Great job. I'm guessing most musicians don't want to know how to build the equipment, they want to know how to use it. Many online tutorials seem to lean toward the former, which is a turn off (unless you're really trying to design a piece of equipment :) ) With that said, your info is spot on. Talking colors rather than exhaustive quantities of numbers is a huge plus for most home recording novices. As a side point, human/machine interfaces typically work better in most cases with big needles pointing to clock positions on a gauge (like the colors on a meter). That's why many auto's, aircraft, and spacecraft have the displays they do. Thanks again for keeping it simple.

Getting ready to move and will be setting up an actual drum/studio room and getting all the gear in the process, so this is really relevant to me. Even though I have been drumming for 50 years, I have not been involved with any of the recording/mixing side of things. I know this is an old video but the information is still relevant today, there is just better components today. I am looking at the Focusrite line of audio interfaces - they just came out with Gen 4 of everything, but I might get the Gen 3 18i20 unit since it should handle anything I need - however I really like the autogain function of the Gen 4 units.

If you got a Mac with thunderbolt I'd definitely go with the Clarett. The other ones are getting pretty old and I don't see the point in going for them unless you have a Mac with firewire still. I don't have any first hand experience with the Clarett's but I'm sure they're nicer and more efficient than the Saffire line.
