Jim is a stand up guy. A couple years ago I had a new microphone and was calling cq. He let me know the audio was highly distorted. He waited while I ran up to my attic and put the old mic back on to confirm there was no other problem, then had me turn the gain up a bit For better audio. That says a lot.

Thank you Jim. Solid advice, as usual. As a new general amateur radio operator, I find it very tempting to use that gain control as a throttle thinking it is going to give me more "power" to bust through noise or weak band conditions. @@ham-radio The settings that are there when you reset the radio to default settings. I have done this a few times after messing with the settings and getting it all messed up. The settings that the radio came defaulted to out of the box. I can get you the page number to how you get the spot on the menu where you do this but better yet press the the Menu button, select Set, scroll down to select Others, select Reset then select All Reset or Partial Reset depending on how much you want to reset. I selected the all reset. I believe there is a way to save your custom settings to a SD card so you can reload those back into the radio after doing a reset or maybe instead of doing a reset.

@@ham-radio Just a basic interface that provides for audio pathways from the computer sound card to the radio and PTT. For my test demonstration, following my powerpoint presentation, I chose a TS-120S. So it was interesting for the audience to see a radio from 1979 charting QRP propagation pathways into Europe via WSJT-X. I used a 2n2222 to key the rig with RTS from a USB to serial. And 600 ohm 1:1 audio transformers. The appropriate mic connector for your radio and 1/8" headphone jacks for the sound card connections. It was an advantage of a virtual meeting that I could demonstrate a working 'proof of concept' which wouldn't have been possible at a normal meeting.

So glad to see you Sir-Jim after a long time! Was worried about your health, though. A very good video on mic gain indeed. I had noticed this most important ingredient of mic gain, compressor, white noise, etc. in course of my audio editing for KZitem videos. I do not own a oscilloscope but then, when there is a clipping or peaking in the sound, it clearly shows the waves in the audio editing software's spectrum analyser. And yes, the compressor does a fine job to boost up the low noise captured through the microphone and equalise the total output. This brilliant video of yours only helped me to understand how a random increasing of the mic gain can distort and create harmonics in the other bands. Thank you once again - stay safe and stay blessed. Greetings from New Delhi, India. 73

Hi Jim, nice to see you in good health, I have an IC 7300 and I use a Heil Mic PR 781, and I was wondering about mic gain, and on 20mts I had a job to get the ALC to move without turning things right up, and I wasn't happy with that, then after thinking about it I came to the conclusion if 100 watts shows on the radio wattmeter when you talked in the mic it didn't really matter if the ALC didn't move at all or just a little, as 100 watts was going out, that's how I have it and it seems to work ok, I have the compressor on, the Mic is on 50% and the comp about 1/2 way from memory.......from Fred in England, g4vvq.
@ham-radio
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Fred! Yes and good for you figuring that out. I don't like that mic. Icoms do not, I believe, have a mic preamp with much gain. Low output mics will need to have the mic gain control up bunches. My guess is that they design the transceiver with an electret mic in mind. Eletrets are in many Icom mics. Eletrets have lots of output. A peak reading wattmeter is probably a must in your station so you can see that you have watts in the coax. 73 from Jim in Placer County. @@ham-radio Oh I have to laugh, they go through a Ham course and then pass their test for a full licence. Their next move is to get a power mic with a compressor, turn it full up so everyone can hear them, then turn the Mic gain full up on the rig, just so they are nice and loud. Then they wonder why no one can make them out and understand them. The rig is so busy trying to clip the audio and the band ith of their speech is so wide it is like listening to SSB on AM, just a load of noise and splatter everywhere. You just can't make out what they are saying on AM let alone SSB. If only they listened to themselves on a receiver and recorded it and had a listen. How many times have you heard a set over modulated as well, I can just hear them thinking "If I turn this up I will be louder", yes but unintelligible. All the classic mistakes of a dumb CBer in the 70's who thinks power and max mic gain is everything, then wonders why people ask them to talk quieter! They also wonder why people tell them they are splattering everywhere! Takes all types to make a world!

No. You must be licensed. Period. Get the license and have fun. Do not transmit any power without a license. Thanks, Jim

Good question! I am working on the tower. Now I only a have a dipole Igot at 6 meters above ground. Igor, my single GS35B is QRO with only 3200VDC. When I put it on the air after 9 months in storage. I had to replace the tube because the original tube acted like it had a plate to grid short. It blew fuses every time I applied plate voltage after 3 minutes warmup. Thanks Igor. Always nice to hear from R0. 73, Jim

Well, not great my friend is the answer. I have a new doctor and a bunch of new medicines to take everyday....all day long. I did walk a mile tonight and my legs are sore. The doctor wants me on oxygen much of the day and so a new machine is being ordered. Thanks very much for asking. I do appreciate a lot. It does help me. 73, Jim
