@alexcrowder1673

I know this is old, but for anyone else watching this, you can buy metal clamp on locks thatll fit most standard cages. I personally like using clear bins with thick lids, gaskets and latches though to save money. The key is to get a bin with a lid thick enough that it wont bend and let the centipede wedge its way out. I like them better than the metal latches because they are waaaat easier to get open. Plus this way i dont have to tape up the screen top on the enclosure to conserve humidity, all i have to do is drill holes. If you dont have a drill, even just a nail and lighter will work too. Youll just have to reheat it every couple of holes.

As a pest control technician and more specifically termite technician. If the house you live at has been treated for termites then its a good chance the soil next to your house has that chemical next to it. The labels all read do not treat next too flowering plants or edible crops as close as 6ft. I'm guessing this is the "safe" distance they recommend for the chemical. Also check if your state requires a termite treatment upon sale and construction of the house, if so chances are the soil next to the house has the chemical in it already. Here in Virginia it is required by state law to treat all houses before construction and upon sale of the property if the property had evidence of termites. Chemicals like Termidor and Tim-bor state that it's only used to kill and treat for termites, but I can assure you it is easier to name the things that it doesn't affect than the organisms that it does. For instance if this chemical is applied next too a plant that flowers as close as six feet, any and all insects that come in contact with the stamen and pollen on it will die due too the "Termicide". Just a precaution do check these things because I know of 4 different types of insectcide used for treating termites, are still 68% affective at the ten year mark. Needless to say I hate my job and wish I could provide for my family in better ways but I feel obligated to inform people of these hazards society seems to welcome into their homes.

I do use plain regular soil for my horned frog, gecko hides, egg incubation containers, invertebrates etc with no problems. It is natural and free, and contains minerals that go to the animal when the swallow a little. Also it contains microbes that can break down some of the unseen waste. The only con is that it dries more fast. On the other hand peat moss is too lightweight, soft, becomes dusty when dry, sticks everywhere, is an impaction risk, and contains neither minerals nor beneficial microbes.

Man...? You sound like your pretty smart & you have covered the basics but You might want to consider that soil from outside most likely has mites and some of them could cause issues for your new pet I know this cause I kept Tarantulas since I was 12 and found that out the hard way.. What I found that worked the best was "bed a beast" which is basiclly coconut husk compresed into a hard brick and you boil it in a large pot the brick unravels into a fantastic substrate that is germ & parasite free and holds on to moisture very well. Just have to look out for the feeder bugs you use cause sometimes they have some hitchhikers on them (parasites) but the coconut offers some resistance to them they never seem to explode in numbers like they can in run of the mill backyard soil.Ive read that centipedes are suseptible to opertunistic mites & parasites as are tarantulas, and centipedes dont line any burrow with silk of any kind so its even more exposed? Just a thought for you to consider bud & by the way, thats a good lookin pede best of luck.

@AfroHerpkeeper
7 жыл бұрын
If it's a healthy weight, you're feeding it the right amount. I'd say that number of crickets is great for its size! Juveniles need more protein than veggies, so as long as it's getting at least some of the salad it should be good. Are you dusting the crickets with calcium powder every now and then? Does it have a water dish? They prefer standing water over misted water, so get a dish asap if you don't have one.

How can you hold a centipede are they poison or not
@Alex-tx8lf
7 жыл бұрын
They are venomous (venom has to be injected, poison has to be injested) and centipede bites are known to be very, and I mean VERY painful. The venom differs with species of centipede and there are some you can handle, but it's not recommended in any case. Do a bit of research, I'm sure you're gonna be interested. :)

Depends - I think that if it's getting a balanced diet and lots of UVB light, it may not be necessary. However, my baby box really loves chewing on cuttlebone - I would recommend buying one and leaving it in with the turtle. That way, the turtle is easily able to access calcium if it feels like it needs some.

I'm a little late to the party, but this seems like a really cool pet to keep! Do you know of anywhere I could get one of these? I live in a place where they're non-native, so I can't just go out and catch one. Also, would a 2.5 gallon be enough to keep one it's entire life or would I have to upgrade at a certain point, maybe to a ten gallon? And, for my last question, how long do they live? (sorry if this was a lot of questions lol)
@AfroHerpkeeper
6 жыл бұрын
A five or ten gallon is more than enough for an adult, and I want to say they reach 20-40 years? Awesome! I think I'll be doing a care guide on my gulf coast toads pretty soon - their care is almost identical to your species. In the meantime I'd definitely recommend reading this: www.reptilesmagazine.com/natural-history-and-captive-care-of-the-fowlers-toad/

Nice video, but this is not a good setup for these guys. Firstly your ornaments are way too close to the top, allowing it to run up and over the edge in no time. If people try this set up with something like a dehaani, it could end badly! Secondly you don't have enough ventilation for this species. Centipedes native to dry areas will get problems and often die if you keep them too moist. They need good ventilation in the cage to prevent humidity build up, with only a moist spot under their hide. That's pretty hard to achieve if you have no ventilation, if you have highly absorbent (i.e. fibrous) soil, or if you add things like moss. Best stick with sandy soil like what you dug up, and keep it dry except for under the hide, which should be large and flat enough to block evaporation :-)

Thanks for the input! I agree it needs a bit of work. I went largely for appearance over functionality with this setup, though I'm not terribly worried about this one climbing out as it spends the majority of its time underground. I tend to keep the enclosure completely dry apart from a light misting every couple weeks, but I'll do some work on it in the future.

Yeah, you need to know your pede... Some of mine live in relatively shallow tubs, whereas I have other I just can't risk that with. The problem is that a lot of beginners get a dehaani as their first pede, and tend to think that centipedes aren't that different from one another except in size. Nice setup on the aesthetics though, I agree.
