Usually you have to edit an ini file to change the resolution and do a couple of work rounds to get the game running on newer graphics cards through windows. I had a play around with bottles to see if I could get the EA play app loaded and running but it was pretty finicky and buggy so I gave up. I have got a fair bit to learn.

I'd say I'm pretty new to Linux, since I only experimented with it almost a year ago on an old laptop and running Linux Mint. Now I'm planning on using Linux as the main OS on my PC (while dual booting with Windows if I need to use it for something small), and so I just want to download a distro, do the necessary steps of installing everything for it to work (hopefully easy steps), and it actually working or at least not having many issues. I don't know anything about Fedora and I just got introduced to Nobara with this video, and so I'd like to know if you have any opinions on what I should use. Thanks!

Mangohud can also limit your FPS which is very useful if you're using more than one monitor with different refreshrates as vsync will sync to the monitor with the lowest refreshrate, at least using X11. Of course, if you use a monitor per graphics card, it's not a problem, only when multiple monitors are plugged into the same graphics card. With a 72hz monitor and a 144hz monitor in my case vsync fixes the fps to 72 on my 144hz. When disabling vsync and letting Mangohud frame limit to 144 it's a very clean experience, but there's still a little bit of screen tearing. So I'm really hoping gaming on Wayland will fix these issues, because it's pretty normal for Linux users and in particular Linux gamers, to have more than one monitor now - and game on one of them.

Hello, First and foremost, thank you for the abundant content on the channel; I've learned a lot from it as a beginner Linux user. I have a question, and I hope it won't cause any trouble. If it does, I apologize. I have an old i5-4690K. What I managed to find out is that, as it belongs to the Haswell family, there's no suitable Mesa/Vulkan driver available for it. I even disabled the iGPU in the BIOS because I wasn't using it for anything. While it was enabled, I was getting this error: `mesa-intel: warning: Haswell Vulkan support is incomplete`. However, now with the Nobara Linux, a new error has come up for which I couldn't find any solution: `MESA: error: Use of VkSurfacePresentModeCompatibilityEXT without a VkSurfacePresentModeEXT set. This is an application bug.` But if I remember correctly, though not entirely sure, I didn't have this issue with Nobara 36 when using the 1050 Ti and the CPU. Perhaps there's an idea to get me started on fixing this error? If you have any suggestions, I appreciate it in advance. But I'm also thankful if someone took the time to read this comment. Have a great day!

Potential I-Gpu Stutter Fix: Hey guys, I just wanted to share that on my Laptop with integrated graphics, I got stuttering issues with Fedora. I tried out LMDE 6, and to my suprise every single game ive ran with it has been buttery smooth without any extra software, tricks, or launch commands (Overwatch 2, Lethal Company with mods, Battlebit, Elden ring has slight stutters now and then but its not bad and I think thats due to the laptop hardware) straight from steam! Linux Benchmarks did say Nobara may have fixed the stuttering issues too as it may have more preinstalled packages for IGpus (and if thats true it may be a better option to have more up to date software), but for right now everything is working perfectly fine with LMDE 6 so I wont be distro hopping anytime soon! Hope this helps some of you, and thanks for the video Linux Benchmarks! EDIT : So I loved LMDE but wanted something a bit slimmer. Went with debian minimal and installed xfce on it. Got the same stuttering, so I did some trouble shooting and long story short auto partitioning during setup set my swap partition to 1gb lol. I loaded gparted on a usb and increased my swap partition to 10gb (may be a bit overboard but my laptop only has 8gb of ram so dont want anything to fully freeze my laptop), seemed to get rid of the stutter!

@@jonbrandjes9024 I used to have that same issue, but I was able to fix it for the most part by installing steam via flathub and then making sure shader cache is enabled in the steam settings. Also making sure swap file was large enough did the trick for me. 1st launch takes a while but after the first launch itll save the copiled shaders and launch fast and smoothly. I think the reason flatpak worked better than native steam for me was because flatpak version comes with latest packages that my distro didnt have (mesa was the big one for me I think because I have an AMD gpu).

@jonbrandjes9024 the reason the shader recompiles on steam is because lutris overwatch script has a environment variable for saving the shader cache in a folder while steam can utilise its own shader cache but thats if you have shader cache enabled, i dont and rather just wait for gpl to load the shaders as it doesnt take long for me Whats your hardware by the way? And what distro are you using?

@@LOWKAN i would say you should be trying a distro that uses x11 by default as wayland is the compositor we are using now as it supports multi monitor properly and other big features like fractional scaling is better, vrr/freesync support, hdr support. with x11 with multi monitor, if you have a monitor let's say that it is 165hz, and you have a second monitor that is 60hz the windows you move around on your 165hz screen will feel like 60hz because x11 1. Linux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon is based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (a Debian based Linux Distro) which uses the 5.15 linux kernel, an older kernel version. But the next major release for team Linux Mint will be LM22 that is based on newer Ubuntu 24.04 LTS which has an updated kernel version 6.8 that has sorted out many hardware related issues (e.g. audio, peripherals, etc.) You have 2 options either use 'Linux Mint Edge Edition' which utilises a more recent kernel running the kernel version 6.5. If your issues persist then try switching to other debian based distros with the an even newer linux kernel version 6.8/6.9. Personally I switched over to Fedora as it emphasis stable rolling releases adding useful updates much more frequently and also because Fedora is a distro focussed more towards Linux Gaming and 3rd party open source integration. After I switched over to Fedora 40 with kernel version 6.9, my audio issues have completely dissapeared. All the best.

Hey, Im still having issues with games stuttering and im on Fedora 39. I have the mesa 23.2.1 drivers installed, steam is installed via the repo in discover, and gamemode is installed, but if I disable shader precaching my games stutter very bad, and the only way im able to fix the stuttering is by enabling precaching and using the "RADV_PERFTEST=gpl" launch command. Isnt it suppose to use gpl by default with the new mesa drivers, why do I need the launch command to stop the stutters? And why do I need to use precaching in addition to the gpl command if gpl disables precaching to begin with??? Really confused as to why disabling precaching with no gpl launch command leads to massive stuttering. Very confused, and any answers will be appreciated! :)

Gaming worked fine for me with the exceptions of the games that will just never work on Linux like Valorant. The things that bothered me was the stuff not to do with gaming. Like my browser crashing constantly watching youtube videos or watching amazon prime video. things like that it can work good for a while then all a sudden just break in an update and not work for weeks at a time. For me i'll just stick to windows 10 until 2025 then hopefully Linux will be more ready for mainstream.

I wish the non-steam games are as easy to setup as the steam one. For example, in the Steam one, it will automatically install all the dependencies (all those dotnet60 stuff). I managed to get Lutris to work, but I have to do a lot of manual stuff, since their install script isn't super well maintained. Also, I think it requires some level understanding of how the compatibility layer work to be able to successfully troubleshoot issue. Since these games were made for Windows, the experience on Windows is ... double click the .exe file, and run. That's it. I wish we can achieve that for the non-steam games on linux.

Gnome Extensions are cool and i used them daily but at that point i realised what is the point of running gnome with extensions to make it behave like kde plasma when i can just run kde plasma lol It also comes down to the kde devs seem a lot more nicer than gnome devs as they are not as strict with development on different software enhancements like vrr and quick wayland improvements. Id definitely give kde plasma another try as it has matured rlly well in the past year on a bleeding edge or rolling based distro

Your statement about "system install" of steam being mandatory for proper GPU utilization is misleading. As good as this is, this is all still FAR too complex for average people and won't be completing with windows for quite some time. Honestly, until a distro comes out that eliminates interaction with the terminal completely, Linux will never hit a note with the mainstream crowd. "People" are dumb and stupid, thus they need dumb/stupid GUIs to understand anything. Apple/Microsoft understand this REALLY well (almost *too* well, actually...). This is something the Linux community still struggle to understand, because most people who can even be bothered to use this os are usually more technically inclined than average from the start (if you know how to, and are willing to boot into the BIOS, you are already more savvy than average...). Things that seem really simple to an average linux user (or a veteran windows/mac user) can be nightmare fuel for normies. Why even worry about distros and flatpaks and proton and command lines and kernels and terminals and "sudo wtf killme", when you can just turn on the Xbox or run steam on Windows and "it jus works". Linux needs to be this simple for it to grow market share, its that simple.

Linux has become so much more simpler than it was 5 to 10 years ago, the majority of things you do are in a gui, in that video i was probs using the terminal a bit too much as i know how to use it in a very simple way and it was a very long time ago, things move fast in the linux world so things change and standards get created that make linux users lifes easier In my opinion if you want to use linux you need to learn, people forget that you need to learn, and people dont want to learn a new operating system, and that's fine, they can stay on windows or mac because they have already learnt how to use those operating systems at a user level. When you learn how to use linux at a user level, life on linux becomes a lot more simpler, to the point where you start helping out in different projects in the linux world like bug reporting if you haven't followed linux desktop market share over the past 2 years then obviously you dont know that linux has grown close to 4% and has beaten mac os on steam market share, this is thanks to proton and steamdeck, and this continues to bring lots of new users over as people are figuring out that windows is not for them, and they dont like what Microsoft is doing anymore. Also why do you have to worry about flatpak??? Do you even know what flatpak is and what its purpose is in the linux world? It has solved the big problem of distributing packages across all distros, you no longer need to use one specific distro for packages, flatpak literally has solved that issue, you can easily open a GUI store and click install on a piece of software that you want, and thats it. You then update it through the store, the only thing you have to learn is if you want that app to see a drive you can use a GUI app to allow it to see that mounted drive. That whole process was through a gui, but you still have to learn which people dont want to do. Sure proton can be confusing for lots of new users, but again its called learning, you can use the latest version of proton which has the latest patches from valve for your games by default when enabling it in steam, which is in a gui by the way, when you learn what you need and what you want then linux becomes a lot easier But of course i know there are lots of people who take technology and operating systems for granted and they dont care about learning how to use it, and for that windows and mac is a perfect operating system for them. But for users who care about the operating system their using and have had enough of Microsoft and apple then linux CAN be a choice for them to consider When linux gets preinstalled on more laptops and computers, hopefully in stores then that is when linux desktop will become easier because people dont have to use their bios to boot into a linux usb stick or flash a iso file to a usb stick, and the proper drivers for the computer will be installed for the user so they dont need to f around with that, so they can just open their browser or open the gui store to install their favourite applications

@@linuxnext My point seemed to went over your head. Again, the biggest problem with Linux, is the community often gets in the way of growth. My point was that the average person *Will Not* learn anything (Ever), so you *Must* cater to them to significantly grow the market share. It's growing because there has been significant improvement in accessibility/popularity in the last 5 years mostly thanks to Valve bringing more gamers in (and microsoft completely losing the plot), and that is obviously good. But I highly doubt that share will even reach 5% unless a popular distro comes out that's extremely accessible to normies (literally hold your hand accessible). Linux Mint is close, but it doesn't go far enough imo. The un-centralized nature, "complexity," and lack of software, are the 3 biggest things keeping Linux down, all of which can be solved if the community (including the corporate side) work together to address it. It's improving, but the community is still fairly divided in their own little corners/tribes. United we stand, divided we -fall- stagnate. Your reply was almost the equivalent to "just read the manual" and "its not hard *For Me,* so it's fine". Sigh, that's exactly the mentality I was signaling out. It is what it is. Some Linux youtubers like Kent's Tech World understand this very well, but it seems many can't read the room yet.

@@MMOStein i dont think the community is the problem at all, sure there are "gatekeepers" but thats in every space you go to in every community. Thats called life and dealing with people that have egos or think they are entitled Complexity isnt a problem in linux either, on mint/ubuntu/debian its .debian and flatpak Fedora is rpm and flatpak I dont get how that could be "complex" a person doesnt even need to know what that is, all they want is to click install on app in a store which linux does very well + flatpak being containerised means it uses its own depends which can be newer then the system depends your using like linux mint for example as that is LTS Installing drivers on mint are easy peasy through a gui also Configuring flatpak if you want to is easy through a gui if you know what your doing because that is more complex but an average user wouldn't even think about that unless they start doing something more complex which means they need to learn how to do that Also software being a problem is a problem, of course it is, as people use software in workspaces but i dont think linux desktop is ready for being used for work, you can 100% do that and use alternative software that should work like libreoffice or open office or gimp or kdenlive, inkscape, krita etc but i know people dont want to use that software and thats fine, thats where they can use windows or mac for that until then, i see tons of people create dual boots and they have a great time Im not saying linux is the best operating system ever and its ready for everyone because its not. But you can not deny its popularity and its growth in the last 2 years and the MAJOR improvements it has made in that short period + gaming becoming amazing because of valve creating proton This is all changing very quickly and companies like valve are collaborating with teams like kde and others to improve drivers, hdr, color management etc etc so normal users have a good time on linux desktop, this doesnt include the linux community, these are developers who are being contracted to do that work because companies like valve want linux to be ready when windows becomes even more worse for the user. Saying to me that i sound like a "its not hard for me" is funny as i started using linux 2 years ago, i still dont know everything about linux under the hood, but i dont need to because linux is not that hard for the average user, i have teached my friends who have been windows users for over a decade and they understood how to use linux just fine, but the desktop and apps were not the problem or the community, it was companies like nvidia causing driver issues which are being resolved as this was over 2 years ago. My dad who is 60 years old understood how to open apps on the desktop and install basic packages in the gui store, or opening a file manager, its not that hard for a person to use a desktop environment

Essentially they just say launching or get stuck on updating direct x, except very old games like Call Of Duty MW2, what am I doing wrong? Remnant 2 has gold rating on protondb
